 | Tajikistan Tourist Traps | Tips 1 - 4 of 4 | | Popular Tourist Traps | Other Tourist Traps Tips | All Tips (4) I can’t mention it enough on my pages – if you are a millionnaire and have money to waste, then you might consider to use Traveltajikistan aka Great Game Travel for your travels. But as you most probably are not a millionnaire, don’t even waste one second to contact them, as then you’ll be the bank that has to pay for almost everything. And you won’t even need them to organise your GBAO permit (for travelling into the Pamirs), as this is done by STANTOURS as well, much better and much more reliable and honest. Plus, they are locals and not ones that still live in some old colonial days. If you like to know why I am trying to talk you out of contacting TT/GG, just read my travellogue, where I described my experiences with this impudent…. etablissement. I’ll also place this under warnings, so make sure you remember that you have read this here already if you end up in the warning section. Leave a Comment

The hotel in the mountains. Only kidding! This is really a house in the mountains. The Tadjiks are very friendly people and only the best houses are offered for tourists. The trip is only possible with a tour agency who will arrange accomodationa and food. As with all of Central Asia, food is an issue. Leave a Comment

Taxi drivers are happy to get customers, happy to negotiate price and will not drive unless they have gotten a fair deal. Nevertheless, my experience in Tajikistan was that taxi drives, especially the long-distance ones would invariabluy try to renegotiate the fare upon completion of the journey - in addition to tips.
Spend an hour negotiating a new deal or give a tip, and if the trip did not vouch a tip, walk away, even if it means angry gestures and the whole set of rituals of unahppy departure. Leave a Comment

The customs officers will x-ray your things and say you are carrying illegal souvenirs or whatever, and that it is illegal to smuggle them through tha airport/Tajikistan/without declearing them/paying tax. This can be any thing that seems like a souvenir. You are offered to let them do the job for you or avoid the bureaucracy and trouble/delays by paying a fee to them.
You have to go through this so make sure you have receipts showing a legal purchase, the origin of the goods whatever official paper. Or just dump the darn thing if it is not worth anything.
Do not buy souvenirs etc. if you are not prepared to negotiate at the customs. Leave a Comment
