If you like dairy products, you and your stomach will be in heaven when travelling through the Pamirs !
The eastern part of the Pamirs, the one, where you will mostly encounter plateaulike grassy landscapes in the valleys between the high peaks, is where Kyrgyz nomads are herding their livestock, mostly yaks and sheep.
Usually, it’s some families which live in several yurts (like the one in my intro page) and all together they are taking care of their animals. The animals dominate their life, and the products, they make from yak, cow and sheep, are more than delicious.
I had the honor of staying in a yurt with a nomad family, and it was one of my best “food experiences” (what a stupid word) I ever had. Take in account that I had quite a nice case of Montezuma some days or weeks before (maybe from some yoghurt drink in Bukhara), and you can imagine that I was not much fond of eating yoghurt. But, of course, addicted as I am to any kind of dairy products, I ate some, and….. this was the moment when I realized that I needed to catch this Montezuma, to get my bones resorted during the very bumpy 4WD drive on the hardly existing trails, and to get kind of breathless at 4200 m – all this was necessary to endure to let my savour nerves experience what heaven is…
My god, these yoghurts are incomparable with anything I ate before, creamy, rich, and just the right sourish taste ! I must have had this look in my face, my host lady reloaded my jar constantly :-)
What a pity that I could not take some home with me, but I got this weird idea now, if it could be possible to settle some yaks here and have it also available here. But I am afraid, the yaks would miss their usual altitude (definitely in Darmgorod :-).
