krung thep, the city of angels

The sentence that follows is the translation of the 168 letters official (and ceremonial) name of Bangkok. One lesson learned: Thai people obviouly love using superlatives when it comes to their capital city. One interesting detail is that everyone is rumoured to know the entire name of the city by heart.

'the city of angels, the great city, the residence of the Emerald Buddha, the impregnable city of Ayutthaya of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarn'.

    Bangkok - Krungthep Maharnakorn

by maxamilion Updated Apr 4, 2011 7 reviews

An interesting fact that not many travelers know is that Bangkok is not called Bangkok in Thai. It's official name is Krungthep Maharnakorn...... it goes on and on and on, there is actually a song that the Thai people sing to remember the full name of the city!

Try asking any thai friends if they can sing the song for you!
