Victory Monument: Victory Monument
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Monument was built in the reign of the present King to commemorate the soldiers, policemans and civilians who have lost their lives during the border conflict of Thailand and Indochina.

To get there: Take the BTS Skytrain and stop @ the Victory Monumant Station, exit to the left and walk straight ahead for about 3 to 5 minutes. There are also cheap sari-sari stands along the streets to the area.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market: Damnoen Saduak
  • Tip Rating:
  • The floating market at Damnoen Saduak is quite interesting! You gotta get there early though. You can rent a boat for an hour or two and get paddled around. There are some areas that local people come to buy their fruits and vegetables and there are a few stands that are targeting the tourist with the tourist junk! But it is worth the visit! Bring plenty of film or have plenty of MB's on your digital card!
You will have to get up early if you want to leave from Bangkok as it will be about a 2 hour bus ride. Or you could stay the night in Damnoen Saduak.

Urban Stroll: Oriental Hotel to River City
  • Tip Rating:
  • The riverside is one of the most fascinating areas of Bangkok, a constantly changing scene with taxi boats transporting passengers, rice barges and local trading boats, against a backdrop of temples and modern warehouses.

The upper riverside area also contains some of Bangkok's most prestigious hotels, e.g.The Oriental, and refers back to the trading periods of the late 19th century; French embassies, Chinese godowns, Dutch and Danish warehouses, Catholic cathedral and local wat complexes. Also the largest upmarket art and antique centre in Bangkok, River City. This walk is covered in the next few tips. All can be covered in an hour or so in the late afternoon or early evening.

It works quite well if you are staying up at one of the larger chain hotels (Shangri La, Peninsular, Oriental, etc) and you'll end up near River City - where you can get a river taxi or wander around the River City Antique Centre. The map here shows how compact it all is. All you need to remember is to keep between the river and Thanon (Main Road) Charoen Krung. Everything is in this small 2 km patch.

There seems to be life in every nook and cranny of Bangkok - find a bridge or any form of shelter, and there'll be life underneath. These dogs put me into reverse gear! They look hungry and mean, but, the reality is, they are probably so diseased and weak, they can barely snarl at you! Not a risk taker when it comes to disease and things that bite!

This scene was just a few metres away from a very civilised looking shopping area!

Old and New - Chofas and Balconies: in Balance
  • Tip Rating:
  • Temples along Thanon Charoen Krung - Bangkok
    Temples along Thanon Charoen
    Krung
    by Bangkokjoe

This one more comes from a brief one hour stroll around the area between the junction of Silom Road / Charoen Krung, the Oriental Hotel and River City - near river taxi pier 4. My loverrrrly was buying black skirts and perfume. No way was I doing another mall on a Saturday. So wandering I went...

You can find a tranquil temple complex in Soi 3 Charoen Krung... 35 yards set back from the main drag. More than enough for a 20 minute break in an urban oasis. A personal, interesting and tranquil zone. If you are looking for it, stand on Charoen Krung and line up the Christmas Cake tower block with the cotton reel balconies rhythmically bouncing upwards. Behind you and to the left - towards River City is the route to take...

Chofas in the shape and form of nagas are the golden carvings I often see out and around. I find them incredibly sensual. Always positioned at the end of the eaves and the roof ridge and quite often with a bell in the end tinkling away in the breeze and heat. "Chofas" sort of translates (as close as my mate JoJo can explain as a “bunch of sky” her words not mine – though for here we shall refer to it as a “tassle of sky” because it looks more like a tassle than a bunch. These stylized bird’s head shapes grace most of the Bangkok wat's bots (main halls), and are supposed to have magical protecting qualities. Visual poetry.

A good many antique shops sell these mounted, unvarnished and weathered. Chofas.

This can be seen as part of the Urban Stroll around the area shown in the tip with the map, shown at the beginning of this section

Wats are everywhere...: Wat Inthara Wihan
  • Tip Rating:
  • This temple is quite interesting as it has a huge outdoor standing Buddha. It is nice walk north of Khao San Rd on Sam Sen Rd. It can be a little tricky getting to it as it is hidden amongst some small alley ways but just walk around in the area you will eventually find it. Look for the tall Buddha!! Ask locals when you get close!

Suan Lum Night Bazzar: Night Blazzar--Bargaining place
  • Tip Rating:
  • You can drop at Lumphini MRT station and the Night Blazzar is just beside the station, It opens at about 6pm till midnight. You can try the foot reflexology and massage there for about 250 to 350 baht per hour. There are about 800 stalls selling from souvenirs to clothes and shoes. Bargaining is a must. Many tourists goes to the Chatuchak weekend market but the things in this night blazzer is cheaper if you know how to bargain. Wholesalers do set up their stalls there. You can also enjoy the local fare there. The sausages with bacon(10 baht per stick) and Siew Mai is nice(about 10 for 25 baht).

    Thai Boxing
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are two stadiums where you can see real thai boxing. I went to Lumpuri Statidum. Price for "outside ring" 20 dollars. You can see that it is real because there were thai people betting money. I saw 5 fights, in one fight the ambulace had to take one of the boxes to hospital!!

    Get yourself a Thai Massage
  • Tip Rating:
  • Reception desk at the Health Land Spa & Massage - Bangkok

    Land Spa & Massage
    by Vita500
    Send Photo to a Friend
By recommendation of a friend here on VT, I headed for the 'Health Land Spa & Massage' with my fiancee on the second night after arrival.

    The menu:
    - Aromatherapy Body Massage
    - Thai Massage
    - Ayuravedic Massage
    - Foot Reflexology
    - Tourmaline Sauna
    - Body Polish
    - Facial Treatments
    - Thai Herbal Compress
    - Spa & Jacuzzi

We opted for the Thai Massage (450 Baht / 2 hrs) and indulged ourselves with two hours of professional pounding, rubbing and pressing of our various body parts.

We were initially told by people that we might doze off during the massage. Frankly, I seriously question whether people are able to fall into a slumber during the process as we were more or less occupied with surpressing the natural 'OUCH'-reflex every other minute. Nevertheless, our bodies certainly felt great afterwards. ;-)

    The course of events:
First, we went to the reception counter and selected our "menu". After paying the charges, we were asked to have a cup of tea and wait for a moment. After just 5 minutes of waiting it was our turn and we were asked to change our shoes for some comfy slippers. They brought us to one of their many private rooms where we had to change into a pair of airy pyjamas (you can leave your underwear on). A few minutes later our two masseuses arrived and started their massage. 30 minutes on the left leg, 30 minutes on the right leg, 20 minutes for the back, 20 minutes for the head and shoulders and a final 20 minutes of Yoga-streching. After changing back into our street clothes, we were offered a cup of herbal infusion and our masseuses wished us farewell at the exit. They usually expect you to pay some additional tip, so plan for some additional expenses at the end (40 Baht per person should do).

    How to get there:
Take the BTS to Chong Nonsi and keep walking along the main road, following the BTS track, towards Surasak. After 5 minutes you will eventually pass by the Health Land on your right.

    Tiger Temple!!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you're anywhere in Bangkok and you like tigers then you should visit the Tiger Temple!! It's a little way from Bangkok but it's really worth the visit! We paid a driver 1200 baht to take us there from Kanchanaburi (it may be too much but I would have paid more to get there) and the 300 baht entry fee. Once you are inside you can go in and pat the tigers as many times as you like!! And the people working there use your camera to take photos (really good ones too!). The Tiger Temple was the highlight of our whole honeymoon trip for me... :)

Directions: Wat Pa Luangta Bua Yannasampanno Forest Monastery, 69 Mu 5 Tambon Singh, Saiyok District, Kanchanaburi 71150, Thailand
