First off, this restaurant is a SCAM. But I thought I review the restaurant anyway just to give you an idea of their horrid fare. The restaurant was situated in a deserted part of Bangkok. I guess in a way, it deters diners from getting away to other restaurants easily... The place looked old and dinghy, and albeit I visited the restaurant in October 2006, it felt like I entered a time warp and ended up in a restaurant of the 70s. Yup, the decor was like that, and not in a good way.... at all. I actually thought the place felt haunted because it was so sad looking and ridiculously empty - we were the only diners when we entered the restaurant and was only joined by another very small group of unfortunate diners later in the night. Since the restaurant was created to cheat the money of a gullible diner like me who would actually mistaken this as the famous Somboon Seafood for this questionable eatery, the service was actually surprisingly good and somewhat enthusiastic (to part me with my money I guess). I actually thought the staff smiled and laughed a little too much - they must be laughing at how silly my friend and I were to fall for their scam. No contact details will be provided since I would not want you to be cheated like me. Go to the genuine Somboon Seafood instead.
The food in the restaurant was ludicrously overpriced. While most decent establishment Bangkok would charge way less than 100 baht for a serving of Pad Thai, it cost 600 baht here. We ordered it anyway because my friend was a fan of Pad Thai. Bad choice, because the Pad Thai was both burnt and tasteless at the same time. I did not know that such a combination was actually possible before this. Interestingly, the Stir-Fried Asparagus with Prawns actually cost the same as the Pad Thai at 600 baht, which made it a better deal. This dish was actually quite tasty. But considering that the restaurant calls itself a seafood restaurant, the prawns used were laughably tiny. The star of the show, was of course the crab, which was as you may expect by now, supremely overpriced. It cost a whopping 1,000 baht per kg and these were not even the large and scrumptious ones like the Sri-Lankan Crabs. I cannot believe I actually paid very good money for their lousy local mud crabs! Because these were the smaller crabs, eating them were a chore since you had to cracked through a lot of shells for very little meat. The unappetizing looking curry gravy tasted as bad as it looked, which was no surprise at all. The prices for the non-alcoholic drinks like soft drinks, fruit juices and coffee were of course equally unreasonable as well, which were from 150 baht - 250 baht. This original and charming restaurant, in the Sukhumvit (east) area, is managed by the Population & Community Development Association of Thailand. The restaurant incomes help fund population control, AIDS awareness, and a host of rural development programs. That's why such a strange name. You enter the restaurant via a tropical garden, in which there are outdoor tables. When I went it was raining, so I went in, which is nice and charm too. It was cheap (2 USD first dishes, 3 USD mains) and tasty, a great experience! | | | | Bangkok Sky Restaurant: Dining With A View | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Located at the 76th and 78th Storeys of Baiyoke Sky Hotel, Bangkok Sky Restaurant is the second highest* restaurant in the whole of Thailand as of June 2004. All meals at the restaurant will include complimentary access to the observation and revolving roof decks, which offers its visitors a spectaculary unobstructive view of Bangkok in all its panaromic glory. My buddies and I had their weekday lunch buffet which at 310 Baht, was a steal in my opinion. Not only was the food spread very diversied (including Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, and Western), they were all very delicious! And the best part was that their service staff were cheerful, friendly, enthusiastic, and not fake in their service. Really, it was my best meal in Bangkok! * For those interested, the highest restaurant is Stella Palace, a Chinese Restaurant which is located at the 79th Storey of the same hotel. | | | | Emporium food court: Excellent Food Court ...with a (Park) View | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
This new upmarket shopping mall is among the finest in Bangkok. For KL-ites, the shopping mall is rather like a cross between KLCC and Lot 10, but newer. The food court located on the 5th Floor and serves excellent hawker fare at reasonable prices. There is a good range of various noodles and rice dishes and a great selection of Thai deserts. There is also birds nest and braised whole sharks fins (don't lecture me on this, please). Try to get a window seat-as you will have a good view of the park down below. This is pretty rare because there is not much of a green lung in downtown Bangkok...although things are improving. You pay a bit more, but it is worthwhile to be seated in pollution free clean surroundings and in air-conditioned comfort.
I tried the Thai Spicy Papaya Salad ("Som Tam")=it was delicious, with good quality and fresh ingredients being used. The price=35 baht which is only slightly higher than the street price of 30 baht. I also tried the pork ball noodles which were quite nice. Special mention: Thai deserts: from 25 baht (although I have to say that some are a bit too sweet for those who don't have a sweet tooth) Do try the lovely ice-cold "red ruby" desert (cubed waterchestnuts jelly in special coating with ice-shavings topped with pink syrup) or Thai ice-kacang, yellow pumpkin steamed with fragrant coconut milk or sliced Thai mango with sticky rice. This last one sounds uninteresting, but it is truly and absolutely yummy. The taste and textures are complex and interesting: the mango is sweet while the thick coconut milk is a bit salty, and the sticky glutinous rice has a slight bite, juxtoposed with the smooth mango. ~Ahhhhhhh~One bite is not enough! Take note: Photography is not permitted within The Emporium and they are very strict about this. | | | | MBK Food Court: Very centralised Food Court(s) eating | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The most comfortable way to enjoy the street food of Thailand is here: The food courts of MBK. It's comfortable as there is air-conditioning and yet the prices are economical (to different pockets). UPDATED 2007: There are now 2 food courts in MBK. The 5th floor is now home to a swanky upmarket style food court going by the moniker, The Fifth Food Avenue....selling food in a cold faux restaurant ambience with warm lights, live bands and hey, 2-3 times the price. Balmy. A plate of Pad Thai is now 120 Bahts for example. Here, trash the coupons. They issue a kind of smart card that one gives to the respective food vendor and they add one's order to the card. One can spend up to a maximum of 1000 Baht and need to return the card at the exit where you will pay the respective amount you spent. If one doesn't return the card, they will charge you 1100 Baht. The more down-to-earth food court is on the 6th floor....sharing space with many boutique shops and flea market stalls. Here, you buy coupons in bundles of 100 Bahts and get your refund for the remainders by the end of the SAME day. It's noisy, messy, but hey, twice the fun but 2-3 times lesser the strain on wallet/purse!
5F: You get a taste of everything. Local, Japanese, Western, Italian, Pizza, Indian, Chinese and hey, there is even a Halal stall selling local and Arabic dishes. If you like comfort, do not wish to hang around with the locals staring down at you while you struggle with the chopsticks, and just want to place to bum out, try here. 6F: There are stalls selling tasty duck noodles & Thai style "Yong Tau Foo" (noodles served with an assortment of meat and fish items). Also look out for the stalls selling Thai desserts (like steamed Tapioca with coconut milk), Thai Milk Tea, Infusions (like Chrysanthemum, Lemongrass and Barley) and cheap Bird's Nest Brew. If you love food, nary a care for what others think of you as you wolf down whatever that is in front of you, and just want a place for your bum to park while you eat, try here. | | | | Street Food: Delicious Braised Pork Rice | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
There is nothing special about the surroundings or any particular ambience. However, if you'd like to eat like the locals do, and you are at Silom, near Patpong night market, look out for this food vendor who sets up his stall in the evenings, from about 5.30 pm. Before he can even set up his tables and chairs, the customers are already lining up to order their take-aways. By the way, the stall owner speak English and Mandarin, which is great, isn't it?
Braised pork rice. You can choose to have either pork meat alone or pork meat with some pig's intestines (if you like offal, which I do). The rice is not exactly that warm, but the stew is still hot. If you take a seat, he will serve you iced water at no extra charge (see pics). The table has the usual array of bird's eye chilli, small cloves of garlic and chilli sauce. The cost: 35-40 baht per plate. By Malaysian standards, I found the servings to be smallish so we usually ordered 3 plates between 2 persons. I often wonder why the servings are so small-is it because Thais are small eaters? who can tell me? I came across this woooooonderful restaurant totally by chance (as best things in life!). I wanted to go visit the Oriental Hotel, but the doorkeeper didn't like my aspect (T-Shirt, shorts and so) and din't let me in. My intention was to have lunch there, it was already late (14:30) and I was hungry. So I wandered around, desperetly looking for food. Then suddenly I saw a sign saying "Thai Sea Food", and then an alley with an obscure restaurant at the bottom. I doubted, but was hungry (and angry) and though "what the hill!" and went in... What a magical place I found. A patio full of plants, bamboo sticks, water cascades, a nice terrace in the quiet shade... I sat there and a little old woman came to me with the menu. As she saw me doubting, she said: "U R new, uh? I will decide then" and she recommended me 2 delicious dishes (one of them I repeated, it was magnificient!!). Brought me bread, several beers (can't remember how many, LOL) and a delicious tasty desert. It was not cheap (about 20 USD) but I admit it was my best gastronomic experience in BKK!! | | | | Seafood Market and Restaurant: Yummy, Yummy, Yum! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The slogan of Seafood Market is "If it swims we have it" and certainly the array of fresh fish, shellfish, lobsters, crabs and other seafood seems to bear this out. It is more like a large food court that a restaurant, seating I would imagine into the hundreds. your A waiter helps you choose what you want - not just seafood but vegetables and other accompaniments - from what looks like a huge fresh fish/deli counter at a supermarket. Fun in itself as you try and decide whether you want another huge shrimp or that extra bit of cuttlefish. If you are unsure the waiter is there to advise and, later, advice will also come on how best to have the food cooked and served such as in a in a Thai Curry Sauce, a soup, deep fried, boiled etc.. The standard of cooking is excellent and the service speedy. Seeing your piece of fish return having been tuned into a delicious chilli based curry is like the food equivalent of "Stars in Their Eyes". The cost is based on what you choose, its weight and the way it is cooked so you can either choose carefully and keep the price down or - especially if you go for the lobster - splash out and rack the price up. I would imagine a good average would be 30.00-40.00 sterling for two including drinks and a good amount of food. This is certainly not going to be the cheapest meal you can have in Bangkok but it will probably be one of the most memorable.
We had lobster, cuttlefish, huge shrimps, white fish and so much more I can't remember. It was all wonderful!
