Street stalls are convenient & inexpensive and are popular among public in Bangkok. I was having diner at Convent Road near Silom, with beer bought over from 7-Eleven. The "Tom Yam" soup was good. Cost: Less than 100 Bhat

    Street Food: Fresh and Hot!
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the water you'll see other boats passing you...some with tourists like you, others with ladies selling souvenirs and food. You can ask your boatman to stop anytime you see something interesting. The lady in the pic was selling sticky rice inside bamboo. Scott (herzog63) was telling me I shouldn't miss eating this since it's his favorite. It was good...kinda sweet, sticky rice with beans was what I got. A lot like suman in the Philippines. My favorite was coconut pancakes and the fresh fruit...especially pomelos.

Street Food: Don't Forget To Eat off the Street !
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I think by now you have around six billion tips on not forgetting to do this, "Don't Forget the Blinking Street Food" - and many of these tips seem to be no more no less than a picture of the stalls selling bugs that are eaten by upcountry folk. And so you know, these taste almost the same as potato chip / crisps flavourings but without the potato. The bugs not the upcountry folk. Apologies for any confusion caused (No worries - editor) Well that's the grasshoppers (prawns of the air) that taste of potato chip flavourings. The water beetles sort of expode in your mouth with a cottage cheese texture. The mot som sour ants are a bit like tangy cheddar, though you need a good mouthful. Though one stall holder swears blind she can tell what leaves the ants had been eating before they were fried. All the bugs tend to get called maeng though my favourite name is the one maeng da - also a derogatory local term for a rather money grabbing girlfriend. Looks like a cockroach, tastes a bit appley. Protein levels are very high. So now you know. Personally, I prefer not to eat dinner off the street. I have been reliably informed a plate is far more hygienic.

There are street vendors everywhere in Bangkok selling food in various forms from chicken feet to other meats on a stick. I was not brave enough to try any of them fearing food poisoning. These tasty morsels are the most exotic things I saw to eat. I wonder what percentage of western travelers actually try this delicacy.

    Street Food: Cheap Local Food!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The road side stalls sell really cheap food. But please make sure you buy only those that they cook on the spot. And make sure the food is fully cooked... You won't want to go back with a tummy ache.

I got 1 chicken drumstick, 3 sticks of assorted meats (meat balls and stuff) nicely BBQed at less than 40Baht! Don't forget to try the roasted pork neck served at most restaurants too... Totally yummilicious! I ate that everyday!

Street Food: See so nasty eat so tasty
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I was warned that food & beverage is not really clean in Bangkok. In fact, when you look at the food itself and the way they present it, so nasty. But unbelievably, it tasted so wonderful. For god sake please try to eat it, you will then keep looking for more for the rest of yout travel feeding time. Some said we Asian may able to digest the food better but not for people come from the west. But, the fun fact is, the few white men who had taken the food at the same stall with me, coincidently we met again at one of the tourist's spot, and we were all alive (and I believe they still alive at the moment you read my tip). Unless you have a weak digest system, otherwise, you really have to try it and that will be no regret.

    Typical Streetside Restaurant

All over Bangkok there are so many food vendors and streetside restaurants. The vendors along the sidewalk set up a little cart and usually specialize in one item, whether it is satay, sausages, fruit, fish ball snacks or whatever. The streetside restaurants are a few tables and chairs and have a small selection of items available. One of the best places I ate at my entire trip was just inside of Soi 20 off of Silom Rd. The ladies there had a wok and some coolers and served excellent stir fried chicken and vegetarian dishes and stir fried noodles. I ate at this particular spot 3 evenings in a row.

Pad Grapow Gai - Chicken and vegetables stir fried with Thai Basil and served with rice, Pad Naam Prik Gai - Chicken and vegetables stir fried with Thai Sweet Pepper Sauce and served with rice, Pad Thai Gai - Fried Noodles with Chicken Any of these dishes make a filling and delicious meal. Total cost with a bottled water was 150 baht which is less than $4 USD.

    Street Food: Fresh Fruits
  • Tip Rating:
  • Everywhere in the city you will see streetvendors selling fresh fruits, guave, pineapple, papaya, and lots of other exotic fruit-creatures. It is the best refreshment on those hot tropical days (especialy in the city). One very special fruit is Durian, if you are in Bangkok in the Durian-season, you should try it. It doesn't smell good, but it has the taste that you might love (or hate.) In Bangkok it is okay to buy the peeled fruit on the streets. Don't do it everywhere in Asia though.

    Smokes from the street foods!

"Have you eaten yet?" is a common enough phrase in Thailand meaning little more than "Hello" or "How do you do?" yet this preoccupation with food is evident everywhere in the city. Food stalls serving cheap, tasty food line every street and the pungent smoke from numerous charcoal grills fills the air. The huge number of spices a Thai chef uses would baffle your average western chef, but here are integral parts of even the simplest dish. Chili, garlic, coriander, fish sauce, lemon grass, ginger and many more, all serve to give Thai food its unique taste. Thais take eating as seriously as cooking, and consequently, mealtime is almost always a social occasion, ideally including a dish of every kind of food. For example, on the table might be Kai jio moo sab (pork stuffed omelet) which has a savory taste. To counter this, a slightly sweet dish like Gai pat ma muang (chicken and cashew nuts in a sweet sauce) could also be ordered. Soup is very popular in Thailand, so why not one of my favorites? Car Tom Gai (coconut soup with chicken). Finally every meal should include fish and Pla duk foo (spicy mango salad with cat fish) is a delicious choice. Depending, obviously, on where you eat, the above meal with rice and drinks should cost you anything between 200 and 2000 Baht. Good cheap eating is everywhere in Bangkok and below is a short list of common Thai foods and their English Translations. For a more comprehensive list of good eateries, including international restaurants, check Metro magazine, available at most bookshops. Types of Food Cow pat gai/moo: fried rice with Chicken/pork Pat kupow gai/moo: Spicy chicken with Basil and rice Tom yam gung: Prawn and lemon grass soup Pad pak ruammit: Mixed fried vegetables Bar mee moo dang: Egg noodles with red pork Koy teo: Rice noodles Som tam: Papaya salad Yam pla muk: Spicy salad with squid Lad cow: On rice

    Street Food: Street Markets I
  • Tip Rating:
  • It's your call as to whether to eat streetfood. Some swear by it -- others avoid it. I'm afraid I fall into the latter category. I don't need a fancy meal -- but, in a city where it is recommended you drink bottled water, I think it makes sense to be a little careful.
