In keeping with my "philosophy" of "doing what the Romans do when in Rome", it's a great way to be like the locals when you order your food off the streets. They have makeshift tables and chairs that are set up in the evenings, and you can order stuff like organs from pigs; beef noodles; crab noodles; even fake sharks fin soup, a supposed chinese delicacy (actually just loads of starch) and desserts like sweet potato soup, "light soup" etc. This is also the cheapest way to go, as a meal for 2, including drinks, costs just total S$7!

My favourite dish has to be the crab noodles as they extract out the flesh from the crab's shell for you (yes, lazy me...). Simply tasty!

Street Food: Street food - satay
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is food just everywhere in Bangkok. On the streets are hundreds of vendors selling all kinds of food from stalls or from the sidecar of a motorbike. It is generally okay but I don't tend to eat from street vendors very often in Bangkok. I just find that when I sit down for some food I need to get off the street and away from the noise and pollution.

I think its really important to try new things- like the local food when youre visitng somewhere different! Although apprehensive at the idea of "buying food off the street at first", i tried it and was totally impressed! Its really nice to be able to take away- to sit under some shade, or eat with other travellers! Its an art in itself watching it all being cooked in a huge wok with wheels, flames and amazing smells everywhere!!!

had Pad Thai noodles (not too original but safe). I paid about 75 Bhat (about $3 NZD) and got a portion about twice the size of abig mac box. Once it had been cooked and served in front of me (with egg and spring roll) i helped to myself to several of the many complementary condiments (eg soy sauce, chili, salts, sate sauce and many other spices i was unsure of...).

Street Food: Sodas in plastic bags!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • A very practical thing really when doing sightseeing! Whenever you buy a soda in the street (or soy milk) the seller will pour the contents of the bottle in a plastic bag, and will add some ice and a straw. This way, the drink is always cold and as you hang it from your wrist, both your hands remain free!

    Street Food: Roadside stalls
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Thai cuisine is my favourite and is known as one of the best in the world. Food in Thailand is very affordable. The roadside stalls are the topshops! May not be the most appealing or hygenic but it is sure delicious! I didnt used dare eat them but I cant resist my taste buds now. Thai food has a unique flavour of sweet, sour and spicy. The sour and spicy-ness also explains why u hardly see any fat people around! The prices for most dishes are 20baht(about 30pence) where you would expect to pay about 6quid back in the UK...omg!

Ma all time favourite Thai dishes are... 1. Tom Yam Gung(prawns) 2. Chicken Feet Salad(you'd prolly not eat this if your not asian) 3. Papaya Salad-Som Tam(very healthy and oooo spicy!) 4. Pad Thai(noodles) 5. Kway Teow something...(glass noodles with chix or pork...ask for less sugar) You should also try not to miss da amazing desserts they have! 1. Tong Yot(very sweet but one of ma fav's...yellow-orangish in colour...made of egg yolk...high cholesthrol...lol!) 2. Thai Pancakes(i dont know wot's it called exactly. Its a hard pastry shell with meringue and coconut inside!) 3. Mango Rice(Yummy! I like this so much ican eat 3 dozen plates at a go!!) 4. Thai Tapioca with coconut milk 5. C-O-C-O-N-U-T(drink it right from da animal! hah!)

There are noodle vendors all over the city....everywhere you go at anytime of the day or night...they serve everything as well....most things I would have no idea what the actual food was.....we did get comfortable with the noodle people....choose which noodle and they go to town mixing and pouring and doing all sorts of stuff for about a minute or two and then your eating. I think they try to call it pad thai (or sometimes they do anyway)...however I dont think that is actually the dish....more like noodles with vegetables....throw in an egg if you like and off you go. The price ranges from 10-15B. If you look close at the pic, Im actually the one cooking....the nice lady let me step in and cook up the dish for Amy...that was kinda fun...typical Thai....be nice and kind and they will let you do whatever you like...pretty much.

There is but one dish....what you see is what you get.

Street Food: Simple street fare: Assorted glass noodles
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • For 30 Bahts (circa Jul 2006) a bowl - a hot bowl of souped steaming glass noodles with an assortment of ingredients: sliced Char Siew (Chinese style BBQ Pork), fish rolls, pork rolls & dumplings - it was manna for empty growling stomachs. You can have a choice of thick flat glass noodles, thin flat glass noodles, yellow noodles or rice vermicelli. Quickly cooked in boiling water and then doused with soup and ingredients and served piping hot. All you need to do, if you want, is to add soy sauce, fermented fish sauce, sugar or the standard Thai condiment of dried or picked chillies and it's all ready to be slurped up with gusto! The stall owner was very eager and very courteous and what finally sold us, to much laughter in my group was that he used Mandarin to address us affectionately. Don't expect ambience....though on second thought - hmmmm....yes, you DO - the street kind. The floor is grimey, wet and grey. We sat on faded plastic chairs on uneven grounds around a table barely shaded by large umbrellas. (Unfortunate folks will get a lovely tan along with the lunch) But you know what, I like the sound of human interaction amidst a real living setting...this is real eating, albeit with a healthy dose of MSG to go along with the hearty clear soup. HA HA! Farangs be warned!

The glass noodles ala "Yong Tau Hoo" style - 30 Bahts of slurping goodness!

Street Food: Don't ever miss the Foodstall
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • You will find eating places just about everywhere. Outside shopping malls, inside market areas, along the pavement, anywhere a cart and a few fold-up tables and chairs can be placed. Don't miss out on these places as they offer the kind of cheap and tasty food you won't find in normal tourist restaurants. If you're concerned about hygiene, take a look for yourself. The basic rule of thumb - if the food looks good. But as for me,its always about a taste of travel......

Noodle soup, chicken with yellow rice and fried garlic (Khao Mok Gai) or Pak Thai - a delicious fried noodle dish with a host of ingredients including peanuts, shallots, dried shrimp and tofu. Chicken rice and lots more.....

Street Food: Streets of Bangrak (near wet market)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • A whole range of rice cakes and sweets you can choose for an economical breakfast along the street. Reasonably hygenic and in clear plastic sheets. So far no problem with upset stomachs. You have to look for a coffee shop or else pack and eat on the run (no eatting allowed on skytrain though). Alternatively, if you venture in the wet market, you can find noodles stalls including Phed Thai, fried koay teow (flat rice noodles) and beef rice noodles. Al these will set you back by only 20 to 50 Bht depending on what you choose. You may have to use sign language as the hawkers are not always able to communicate in English.

My favourite is glutinous rice (sticky rice in cocunut milk), Costs 15 bht in the streets.Ther are many otther rice cakes to choose from.

One of Bangkok's greatest attractions is its street food scene - delicious, cheap and fun. If you are on a tight budget you could practically survive on 5-baht-per-stick barbecues, 10-baht pad thai, 20-baht curries and lots and lots of other cheap offerings that are simply delicious. They are also very convenient, with street food vendors found in almost every corner of the city. Sanitation? No worries, many of these food are cooked fresh and on site limiting any chance of getting nasty tummy aches. The biggest danger actually lies in overeating and over indulgence - the food are just too appetizing to resist! If there is one thing that was the highlight of my short 48-hour trip to Bangkok, this should be it - my great street food adventure. Note that prices in more touristy areas such as Khao San are easily 25-100% more expensive than those served elsewhere.
