    Carry on up the Klong

I didn't get time myself to do this trip, but I heard several recommendations of it.

The following is from their website:
"These special developed guided Bangkok Cyclist Tours will bring you to places hardly visited by tourists. Klongs (canals) may have once earned Bangkok the title of the "Venice of the Orient." The tropical landscape and Thai style homes will shatter all Western illusions. These bicycle tours bring you to very small backstreets, alleys, markets, temples and even the small streets and houses below Bangkok highways. This gives a true picture of daily life for a lot of people in the city.

While biking along the vast network of elevated pathways over the Klongs, which are only wide enough for bicycles and motorbikes, you will discover real Bangkok. These pathways put the crowded roadways of Bangkok far behind you.

After a nice trip by Klong (Canal) boat you will leave the metropolis part behind and continue your tour through an oasis of green landscape scattered by fruit plantations and typical Thai style houses. Here a few cars will be seen. No traffic jams, no hassle, no shopping malls, no air conditioning, no modern-day Bangkok life. As if you are in a remote village, people live in small houses, living from the products on their lands.

There are hardly any roads, so you are required to balance on the high concrete paths leading through this picturesque part of Bangkok. When you return to the city, you cannot believe that you have just come from paradise.

Our bicycle tours will give you an impression of real Bangkok. Cycle through neighborhoods where you will never go on your own. Bangkok is a very big city but not all buildings are concrete and 25 stories high. Discover the way of life of the local people in Bangkok."

Cycling in remote countryside near Bangkok is must-try tour program while in Bangkok. This tour takes you to the flat dirt road dedicates to casual traveler. We stop quite often to visit the farmer, I was actually going into the muddy fish farm and try to catch it with the help of the fisherman. I was all covered with mud, but it was good experiences of us. The countryside is quite unique with the green of rice fields and mixed farm, villagers are so helpful, the lively local markets consist of bugs' life and others weird animal, the temple is uniquely made from teak wood with Thai traditional style. And the local school fills with enjoyment of schoolchildren when they saw us approaching to the school. Great enjoy.

If you want to see Bangkok from a very different point of view, do a bicycle tour with Co van Kessel (www.covankessel.com). I've been cycling with him, and can highly recommend his tour. You cycle through Chinatown, the cross the river by ferry and cycle in Thonburi in what looks like jungle to me. Not physically demanding, and you see the life of Bangkok as it is. The tour includes everything: bike, guide, drinks, and a longtail boat ride.

You don't need to bring anything but yourself, a camera and some sunblocker.

In 1722, during the reign of King Thaisa of Ayutthaya, the island was cut from an ox bow in the river and was previously known as "Khlong Lat Kret Noi" which means a shortcut to Kret canal. The island has always been populated by the Mon, a people that dominated the area that is now Thailand from the 6th to 10th centuries. The Mon of Koh Kret are famous for their craftsmanship and skill at the potters wheel and still make all kinds of terracotta and earthenware products. The main village is a thriving market place where you can see the pottery making process and shop for pots, mortars, and flowerpots.

Water, soft drinks and snacks are all included all day and SpiceRoads supplies a TREK mountain bike and helmet. The trip is supported for most of the ride by our air conditioned minibus, fully equipped with a two-way radio and Thule bike rack.

Minburi is where the city and countryside collide to create a world of canals, ricefields and cottage industries. It is a place where Muslims and Buddhists live as they have for centuries alongside klongs. The San Saeb Canal, or Klong San Saeb, is one of Bangkok's most important waterways as it connects Bangkok's two main rivers, the Bangprakong and Chao Phyraya. Our ride starts at the hub of the local Muslim community, where the local people are direct descendants of the Thai Southern Thai Muslims invited by King Rama III two-centuries ago to defend the capital from Khmer invaders to the east seeking to invade Bangkok using the canals.

Countryside cycling which is inexpensive, this trip involves a brief (1 hour) local train trip to get us to a more remote cycling area. Immersion to the Thai countryside way of life is great, you will meet the local farmer and fisherman, eat local food and fruits (especially fresh coconut from the farm), and being in local school with the school children was fantastic experiences I ever had. While visiting, we and schoolchildren were dancing and singing a song in local settings. This was my best memory of lifetimes.

First, we cycling through the tiny laneways that were full with vendors pushing their carts to the main street were fun to see, and then we continued cycling along local canals. We stop at the local market, the tour guide shows us kind of thing you don’t really see it in the big supermarket—bugs, live frog and ant’s eggs.

The tour takes you on the brief local train ride. I was the only non-Thai on the train. The first view outside was more or less Bangkok-like, slum, and construction, the second half was the tropical scene. Along came the noise behind me was people try to sell you grill chicken, drink, beer, and Thai dessert.

In countryside. We continued cycling to the head of the village where I had Thai lunch with the local people. While cycling, things surrounded me were the fish and shrimp farms, rice paddies everywhere I turned my head to. After lunch, one of the locals voluntarily climbed the coconut, and that was my first time to taste the freshest coconut juice in my life.

After that, we cycling to the local temple and school, there, was the highlighted of the tour, we were in the classroom with the schoolchildren. When we first entered there, the schoolchildren stand up and said to us “good afternoon teacher,” I asked the tour guide why they called us “teacher,” she explained that these schoolchildren thought that we give them a chance to practice English. We start talking with them with the help of our tour guide. Children were lined up in order to ask us questions, some have their note in their hand, some in their notebook. Despite the fact that they couldn’t speak English, they bravely raised their hand to ask the question one by one, there were like 30 of them in the classroom, but they came to the same question “what is your name?” We laughed and laughed—I was blown away.

The tour also documents you during the trip, check this out:-

The following is from their website http://www.mountainbiketoursthailand.com however I did this tour and tyhe edexfription doesn't quite cut it. This tour was excellent.

The pickup for this trip is from Khao san Rd at 9.00am. We then take a 2 hour drive west to Kanchanaburi province. We will arrive and park at Kanchanaburi railway station where the mountain bikes will be setup for the trip. Next there is a short ride down the famous Maenam Khwae road which is popular amongst tourists.

The next stage takes us over the river Kwae and into the Kanchanaburi country side. We then cycle along the country roads taking in the scenery on the way. After a short climb up a hill we arrive at Kao Poon Cave. Kao Poon cave takes about 30 minutes to walk through. Inside you will find Buddha statues, bats, stalagmites, stalactites and interesting rock formations.

After Kao Poon cave we take a short cycle ride through a local souvenir market and down to the railway track. We then follow the tracks, cross an old railway bridge and cycle through the Chung-Kai cutting. The chung Kai cutting was made by PoWs during WW2 and is part of the Thai-Burma railway system. The cutting was cut into the mountain and is about 100 meters
    long and 40 meters deep.

Next is a cycle ride along the scenic country roads heading for the river Kwae bridge. We will walk across the bridge and have lunch in the floating restaurant under the bridge. The River Kwae bridge is still in service today was part of the Thai-Burma railway system. The bridge was frequently bombed during WW2 and was rebuilt after the war. The arches on the bridge are the original sections.

When lunch is finished we will walk back over the bridge and back to our bikes. We set off again through the country side and back over the river Kwae towards the death railway museum and research center. The museum is located next to Kanchanaburi war cemetery. It has lots of interesting historical artifacts explaining the building of the Thai-Burma railway.

After the museum we take a short ride back to our transportation. We then take a 45 minute drive west towards Wang Pho station. At Wang Pho you will be able to walk along the Railway track next to the cliff face, there is also a small cave next to the viaduct in the cliff face to see. The famous Wang Pho is a large wooden viaduct built into the cliff face by Britsh PoWs. The railway track is still in service today.

I would say just pring a camera and a light rain coat if travelling in the rainy season. M.T. Hill Adventures supplies you with a Trek 4 series mountain bike, helmet, camelbak hydropak, gloves and glasses.
