Chao Phraya River: Take River Boat Taxi on Menam Chao Phraya
  • Tip Rating:
  • I always love to take a public river boat taxi along the Menam Chao Phraya. You can get on and off at both sides of the rivers. There are boat piers near the Shangri-La Hotel and at Sathorn Pier at the Saphan Thaksin Skytrain stop. It is a fixed fare unless you go long distance and cheap too. On board, you will see school children, monks, housewives and commuters to office. I was not observant to see any life jackets. But so far, have not heard of any incidents.

    Chao Phraya River: Boat Trips
  • Tip Rating:
  • There're wide-variety of boat trips available along Chao Phraya River. Take the BTS Skytrain to Saphan Taksin (terminal station) then go down to the ferry station where you'll find several boat companies offering you day-trips to: Orchid Farm, Floating Market, ..... Or just simply ride along the river, enjoying the temples and villagers' way-of-life.

Charter a boat (this will take a bit of haggling) to go down the river and off around the canals (klongs). You'll see some interesting sights! It's not always easy to negotiate a good price for a trip; I was fortunate in that someone else sorted this out for me. The going rate these days seems to be anywhere between 3-500 baht per hour - and about 2 hours is a good length of time to go for. Tha Chang pier near the Grand Palace is one of the places to hire a longtail boat. Most tours will take you down the canals of Thonburi - you can read a bit more about this on the www.into-asia.com website.

Chao Phraya River: Ride the River Ferries!
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the great things to do in Bangkok that is quite inexpensive is to take a ferry with the Chao Phraya Express Boat along the river. The boats carry different coloured flags that indicate how many stops they make. You can choose an express boat with minimal stops to get you from A -B or take the boat that is all stops....and see everything. Prices vary from 9- 25 Baht one way......very cheap!

Chao Phraya River: The River boat experience
  • Tip Rating:
  • The view along the Chao Phraya river is fantastic. At least a cruise on the river - Bangkok Style. You can board from Central Pier which is just under the Somdet Phra Chao Taksin Bridge. You can even called it a river-boat about 10 Baht (prices could have changed). You can hop out anytime and catch the boat back to where you started. Easily reachable by Sky Train.

Chao Phraya River: A relaxing cruise at the Chao Phraya River
  • Tip Rating:
  • after our tour to Ayutthaya, we took the cruise at the Chao Phraya River back to the city. The cruise took around 1 1/2 hours. We chose the Shangrila cruise boat which inclued a buffet lunch. I really enjoyed this part of our tour because the food was really great. =)

Chao Phraya River: The Riverside Dinner Cruise
  • Tip Rating:
  • Take a dinner cruise along the Chao Phraya river .The Riverside hotel cruise cost about 120 baht per person for the cruise.Even better you can order Thai or Chinese food cooked to order on board and drinks. On the boat there are two sections to sit, the air-con room with a live band or on the deck. The boat leaves at around 8 pm from the hotel which is located near Krung Thon bridge. The boat heads towards Khrungthep ( Bangkok ) bridge passing many well know landmarks and bridges along the way. As you go along the river begins to really take on another life after dark and when the boat pass the temple of dawn all lit up ,your in for a treat! We brought our own extra large "duty free"Black label .So a jolly time was had especially when the boat went under one of the many bridges...Whooo.....

Chao Phraya River: Activity Everywhere on Chayo Praya River
  • Tip Rating:
  • We travelled along this river several times during our visit, the first time on a Rice Barge tour which was very pleasant as we had Thai food and drinks as we cruised along the river for an hour or so. The second time we took a longboat and this stopped several times to allow us to visit various sites. This boat had a powerful engine and was very fast, a bit of excitement. The river has constant traffic, be it barges hauling rice and other products to and from the ocean port, ferries, longboats etc etc. From the river you get a great impression of the city, the fabulous riverside hotels and apartments, and the developing high rise buildings, however you will see that there are several large apartment buildings completed around 2000 which have not yet been occupied.

  • Directions: Anywhere along the river, suggest you take the Skytrain to the river and then catch a river ferry.
