 | | | | Chatuchak Weekend Market: Shop till you drop | | | | | |
It's funny, before I even went to Bangkok, friends and my sister already told me about the famous Chatucak market. Some don't even go to the temples in Bangkok, but did come here. Anyway, there are so many things to buy here. Everything you could ever want for souveniers, decent stuff, none of the stuff in Patpong, from the normal stuff like T-shirts, food, bags, belts to squirrels, tiny swamp crabs... Check them out on my Bangkok Travelogue at the front. The sprawling weekend market can easily take up a good hours, they have different section for different wares. | | | | Chatuchak Weekend Market: Pleasant Experience at Chatuchak | | | | | |
My friend and i decided to skip the very popular MBK mall and head for the Chatuchak, and it was totally worth our time. This is a weekend market where the locals shop, and you will discover some trendy clothes, unique colleactable antiques, interesting wooden artifacts for home, delicious local snacks and some very interesting sights. After a good bargain, everything can be bought at quite a cheap price. Also since only locals head there, the shop keepers are much more friendly to tourists; unlike at Pahtong beach where tourists get hassled all the time. If you dont want to leave bangkok after only buying t-shirts and cheap electronics, Chatuchak is the place to shop for a pleasant experience. I even spotted cute puppies being sold in small baskets there, something very unusual for me, but very commonplace there. They also play their national anthem at 6 in the evening, so dont be surprised to suddenly see everyone stop moving and be frozen! The market is only open on weekends from 10 to 6 in the evening. The market is in the north of the city so either take the subway or a taxi. At first the taxi driver will try not to go by meter, but make sure you get a price fixed for the journey beforehand. Be Prepared to walk a lot while shopping. Directions: Ask for the free map at the airport or your hotel and locate Chatuchak in the north of the city.Website: http://www.discoverthailand.com

 | | | | Chatuchak Weekend Market: CHATUCHAK | | | | | |
Open every Saturday and Sunday, Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is one of the biggest and most famous markets in the world. If bargain-hunting gives you an adrenalin rush, get ready for a head-spinning, earth-moving experience. Conquering this massive market is no easy feat though. The reward for taking a lot of patience along - together with a bottle of water - is that you can find pretty much anything here. Firstly, to get a free map from one of the information kiosks and (try to) plan your adventure through the never-ending maze of crowded, narrow alleys that are, surprisingly, numbered. But, it's so big that even with a map you might find yourself going around in circles. Areas are also demarcated in colour zones with clothing and fashion items grouped together, a section for household goods, crafts, pets, art and collectables, plants, wholesale items, food, and everything in between. OR just follow your instincts and leave it all up to karma. Either way, it's virtually impossible to see it all in one day - and even more unlikely that you won't find something to get excited about. Open: 08:00 - 18:00 on weekends and Fridays (wholesale day). Plant shops are open Wednesdays and Thursdays too from 07:00 - 18:00. video from youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm2lZkBF_x8&feature=related Directions: Take BTS to Mo Chit st and exit down the right-hand stairs, follow the crowd for a 5minute walk, and you're there. OR take MRT to Chatuchak Park st, and follow the signage directives. For the plant and flower section, get off at Kampheng Phet st (exit 3).Website: http://www.jatujakguide.com

 | | | | Chatuchak Weekend Market: Weekend Market | | | | | |
Shop till you drop. Though there are many markets throughout Bangkok, Chatuchak Weekend Market is still pretty much the undisputed king of them all. The scale of it is pretty unbelievable. You could get yourself lost in this market! The range of products on sale is extensive, and includes household accessories, handicrafts, religious artifacts, art, antiques, live animals (which unfortunately are frequently caged in cruel conditions), books, music, clothes, food, plants and flowers etc....from anything to everything!!.Bargaining is expected at Chatuchak according to your budget and the prices are generally substantially cheaper than the shopping centers and street stalls. So...prepared for the worse humid inside the market. Get your water bottles in hand.
