Thai food on Thaniya Road
2 more images

Don't miss out on these places as they offer cheap and tasty food you won't find in normal tourist restaurants. If you're concerned about hygiene, take a look for yourself. The basic rule of thumb applies; if the food looks fresh, the oil in the pan isn't dark sludgy brown and the food is thoroughly cooked in front of you, it's generally safe to eat. Go at lunch time, when food is freshest. Stir-frying, grilling and soup made from boiling water offer safe cooking methods. Avoid eating anything raw as this may have been washed in contaminated water and avoid crushed ice which might have come from a dubious source. Follow these basic rules and go for it!

Thai food is not just a culinary feast, but an unrivaled adventure. Arrive with an open mind and you will be hooked in no time. Don't hesitate to try something new or different. We only live once. In the West, anyway...

Northeastern Fried Grasshoppers and other insects!

You will find eating places just about everywhere. Outside shopping malls, inside market areas, along the pavement, anywhere a cart and a few fold-up tables and chairs can be placed. Don't miss out on these places as they offer the kind of cheap and tasty food you won't find in normal tourist restaurants.

If you're concerned about hygiene, take a look for yourself. The basic rule of thumb - if the food looks fresh, the oil in the pan isn't dark sludgy brown and the food is cooked in front of you, it's generally safe to eat. Go at lunchtime, when food is freshest (it hasn't been hanging around in the heat of the day) and when you can generally get a better choice. Stir-frying, grilling and soup made from boiling water offer safe cooking methods. Avoid eating anything raw as this may have been washed in contaminated water and avoid crushed ice which might have come from a dubious source. Follow these basic rules and go for it!

Good choices include barbecued chicken and sticky (glutinous) rice, (Gai Yang and Khao Neeow) often found at roadside stalls, spicy green papaya salad (Som Tum) Noodle soup, chicken with yellow rice and fried garlic (Khao Mok Gai) or Pad Thai - a delicious fried noodle dish with a host of ingredients including peanuts, shallots, dried shrimp and tofu - just a few of the lunchtime favourites

If you're really feeling adventurous, you could try some north-eastern specialities like fried grasshoppers, beetles, ants eggs fried with garlic, and various grubs. Tastes vary but the general opinion is that they taste like chicken, while the grubs have the consistency of prawn crackers - taste for yourself!

Try street food

It’s not so good idea to try street local food since you arrive Thailand for first 48 hours. Your stomach could be strong and healthy for your country but it probably weak for this country. However, after you get use to with the weather and adjust timing here already, it could be your time to take adventure of trying food from the street. The popular and easy to try to eat is at Khao San Road.

These are recommended dishes for you “Spring Roll” and “Pad Thai, Thai noodle”

Small food stalls

In Bangkok, apart from breakfast at the hotel, I normally eat only street food.

Its so tasty, so cheap, and so good

For those of you who are afraid of getting Bangkok Belly, the trick is, dont eat off plates and use utensils that have been washed in the street, that is where the problem lies, the food itself is usually fine as its well cooked, its the washing up in the bucket that causes the problems. - anyhows, its always worked for me, I have never had any trouble.

Bite into the Big Mango!

To truly appreciate and embrace the vibrant Thai culture, you have to take the time to know and understand the food because it is central to the Thai identity. And though Thai cuisine has been influenced somewhat by neighboring countries such as India and China, it still retains much of it's own unique and distinct flavors. But the most important thing I learned about Thai cuisine is this: the exclusive use of fresh ingredients. Everything is made fresh, including curry pastes which don't contain any curry powder or other dried and ground spices.

Banana Pancakes

One of the best things about Khoa San Road, is the fact that there is so many different types of food stall, and so many varieties of food...

One of my favourite things which were sold, was the pancake.. you have a choice in what you have, but i recomend trying one with bananas inside, wrapped with a little bit of condensed milk with chocolate on the top. This is especially good for all those with a sweet tooth. If having both chocolate and milk is too sweet, try it with just the milk... or just the bananas... so yummy.

I think the price varies from what you have, from as little as 15baht to 30 baht.. but again, this is like 50p for english people!

In Any Street In Bangkok

Here is a push card, big and wooden push cart full of DURIAN FRESH FRUIT. This is a very popular fruit all over Thailand. You do need to have a liking for it as it has an extremely strong pondant smell, in the contrary if you like eating Durian, it´s like heaven eating durian, specially the ones grown in Thailand, they say it´s the sweetiest, juiciest in the world...well, most and prodominentely fruits in Thailand are so sweet and extra larger than what we see back here in Barcelona.
