Floating Market: Damnoensaduak Floating Market - Venice of the East
  • Tip Rating:
  • we booked a tour from Kao San road coz i read that we can find the cheapest travel tour and accommodation here from other VT member. It turned out to be true compared to other travel agents outside Kao San road. We paid THB600/person (as at July'06) for our tour to the Floating Market and Samphran Elephants Ground & Zoo. On the way, we stopped at the coconut workshop to see how the local people made sugar out of coconut. we reached the Damnoensaduak Floating Market around 10.30am after 2.5 hours journey from the city of Bangkok. Once there, we were treated by taking the so-called James Bond boat around the canals at the area, before we actually stop at the market. First i thought the floating market was a huge area. But after we got a ride on the sampan (THB150/person as at July'06) around the area, i realized the the place was only made up from 2 canals. One main canal was about 300m and another one was only about 50m. So if you think THB150 wasn't so reasonable, maybe you can just take a walk along the river bank. But for me i think it will be a waste to go so far away and not paying a little more to experience the way they do business on boat. ^_^ If you're on the boat and planning to buy something from the local merchant, make sure you bargain very hard. Coz the price will be a few times more than the normal price. And another important tips are to wear light and bring along a cap or sunglasses as the sun is very hot there... Enjoy!

Floating Market: Monks at Floating Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • Picturesque... I saw many fruits, shirts, huts, handicrafts and monks with digital camera filming, was very curious. To go to floating market you should go trough an agency. First, you go by van like 1 1/2 hour, then a little wooden boat or canoe which leave you in a place where you can see the canals but if you want to stay really there, I mean, between canals, you have to pay for it extra 150 bath each if you go with a group of 6 people in total per canoe, that's for about half an hour, but you can also hire a private canoe. Back to the hotel we saw the coral show which was surprising, disgusting, amazing, dismal, I don't know I had a lot of feelings, but it's up to you if you want to see it you have to pay 200 bath extra. Then we went to Royal Thai Handicrafts Center and we saw how people work the woodcarving and of course, the took you to the store to buy more handicrafts even there was plenty at the floating market, but yes, they offer better products, higher quality.

We saw more tourist here then vendors on boats. Hahaha .. yes this is where the tourist comes to buy and experience sitting on boats and going around in the market area. There are many things on sales like food, fruits, vegetables, souvenir, bags, and handcrafts. I doubt they are made here but you have to bargain hard! You might have a better deal after all.

Floating Market: At the market (II)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Many people say that floating market is a too touristy activity, that it is not a genuine market. They are probably right, at least partly. Since Danoem Sadouak was accesible by road (we were told that it was, more or less about 10-15 years ago), floating market lost its importance as a trading place for local population. Nevertheless, if you ask me would you recommend to visit Floating Market?, my personal answer would be a big YES. We had a great time there, we saw some things that we had never seen before and WE HAD A LOT OF FUN. When you get to the main street of the market, it is so crowded that boats hardly can sail and it is really funny to help your boat with your own hands to avoid crashing with others. It was a very enjoyable day for all of us.

Floating Market: The best thai experience
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the highlight of our travel to Thailand. A must do for all visitors. 1.5 hours from bangkok. took a THB500 van tour from GH in Bangkok.Arrive there, pay THB150 plus THB20 tip for the "sampan" 1 hour tour. Don't forget to buy "Sticky rice with mango".yummy. a thai must eat lite snack. Its nice to see how the seller use the boat to sell thing like foods, fruits, souvineir etc. Want to go back again 1 day. But you need to arrive there early in the morning as it will get crowded 10 a.m above with tourist from bangkok. Another option is stay overnite the area and wake up early to experience it.

    Floating Market: Interesting place
  • Tip Rating:
  • You can go on a boat to the floating market. The smell isn't too great but it's an amazing experience. Other small boats go past as locals try and sell you their wares - usually souvenirs, fans and coconuts etc. It's easiest to hire a car and (using a good map) drive, then get on a boat. Word of warning, the toilet here costs money so make sure you have some change on you.

You remember the quintessential photographs of wooden canoes with multicoloured fruits, flowers and vegetables, paddled by Thai mamasans with big smiles? That was Floating Market 20 years ago, that is history, that is over! You may take your snapshot here now of rows and rows of souvenir stands lining the canals, and boatloads of tourists. After the 2 1/2 hours drive from Bangkok ... The floating fruit mamasans are still there, so donot scratch this tourist place right away. Enjoy the souvenir market, and want to see the real Floating Market? Come the night before to Damnoen Saduak and take a nice hotel. When you get up early in the morning (7am - 8am) you'll see mamasan in her original and favourite doings ... selling multicoloured fruits, flowers and vegetables. Special note: I heard there are several small family business South of the Floating Market. They love to welcome tourists and there is a enthusiastic tourist office in Damnoen Saduak who can arrange boat-sails to these families (for about 500 THB).

    Floating Market: THE FLOATING MARKET
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the trips I enjoyed the most - as it was very early in the morning, the air was 'fresh' and everything was happening on water! There are several to choose from around the city. The one we went was *Damnoen Saduak Floating Market*. This popular attraction is some 80 kilometers west of Bangkok, accessible by regular bus from the Southern Bus Terminal or - as we did - by taking a Long Tail Boat. This transportation mode gives a pretty good way to find out in which terrible conditions local people are living.

  • A good day out, lots of photo opertunities, but do watch how you get in and out of the boats, we found the guides with groups were hustling to get they groups onto the boats which caused a bit of a bottle neck if you where trying to get off We went as a very small group just 8 and found it just about right as the buses tend to spend a long time getting to and from the Market stopping at every craft market, snake farm etc the journey is about 2 hours so it can be a long day
