Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew: Visit a Place of Dreams
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is an amazing place, very beautiful. I could walk there for hours. I wanted to see every detail of it, and all of it together. I've never seen anything like this in my life! The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is a must. Mind, that you have to wear decent clothes when going to the Grand Palace. No shorts allowed, only long pants or long skirts. No slippers allowed, wear proper shoes.

Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew: Borom Phiman Mansion
  • Tip Rating:
  • This western style mansion was built in 1903 by King Rama V for the future King Rama VI. It has been the royal residence for several kings but right now it serves as the Royal Guest House for visiting Heads of State and guests of the Royal Family. The gates were closed and we couldn't really get a closer look but they allowed people to stick their cameras through the iron grilles for a photo.

Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew: Little tip while visiting Grand Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ok, every tourist will have this Grand Palace in their list of the place must visit. Surely I will agree to it, but only to the first visit. Compares the architecture, the Angkor Wat in Cambodia has lot more to see, but again it is not fair in this comparison as Angkor Wat is one of the seven wonders. Generally, I think Grand Palace is worth a visit. This will be my little tip to everyone. Knowing the weather is really hot in Bangkok, I'll recommend you to step into the palace at once you have the ticket on your hand. There is a fully air-conditioned museum near the entrance, but ignore it at first. Most tourist will go into the museum first, as this really a correct sequence to visit the palace. Even tour guide will do the same. But believe me, there will be nothing missed if you visit it last, and get chilled with the cold air inside the museum before you end your journey, and get yourself refresh for the next tourist spot! Oh yeah, another thing is, remember to dress up neatly before you go. Otherwise, not a big deal though, you will just need to borrow/rent from the authority.

Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew: Grand Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Grand Palace is open every day from 0830 to 1530. Be careful of touts working outside the palace area who tell you its closed, and suggest their own guided tour instead. Free guided tours in English are available at 10:00, 10:30, 1:30 and 2:00. You can also rent an audio guide for 100 Baht plus.

Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew: Wat Phra Kaeo
  • Tip Rating:
  • This part of the palace complex houses the famous "emerald buddha" -- as it is a "working" shrine, shoes must be removed and no pictures permitted inside.

Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew: Grand Royal Palace & Temples
  • Tip Rating:
  • In this large complex, there are many temples, wats and beautiful tiled decor and statues to take picture of. Local Thais can be seen praying with food offerings and flowers, lotuses. The most celebrated Buddha statue is the Emerald Buddha. There is a queue of tourists to enter the hall to sit for awhile and admire this small but exquisite Buddha with all the surrounding royal paraphenelia. Better to respectfully dress when visiting this and all Thai temples. Sleeveless, eye catching shorts, exposed belly buttons, etc are best saved for other occasions.

The Upper Terrace of is the justifiably most popular part of the complex with the Golden Chedi and Royal Pantheon the main attractions. Guarding the area are many mythical figures that have become favorite photo subjects with or without a posing visitor.

Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew: Audience Hall (Phra Maha Monthain Group)(3photos)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The major buildings within the Grand Palace are divided into groups based on location and architecture. This grouping of 3 buildings was the first constructed. King Rama I lived here and since his time all Thai kings have been coronated at this site. By tradition, the first night after coronation the king remains overnight. This building is inaccessible to tourists. The most famous building in this group is the audience hall of Amarin Winitchai seen in the first 3 photos. In past times, foreigh ambassadors presented credentials here and the building is stlll used for state functions. It contains two famous thrones, one in the shape of a boat and the other with a nine-tiered umbrella.
