Wat Phra Kaew itself, generally known to the Thais as Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram, is perhaps the main attraction.

Both the Grand Palace and the Wat Phra are located in the same compound. The admission fee of 250B (for foreign tourists) gets you to visit the whole Grand Palace compound. And mind you, the compound is HUGE!!!

According to the local, when King Rama 1 came to the throne in 1782, he chose a plot of land near Chao Phraya and found the new capital and this is where the Grand Palace is located.

On the other hand, Wat Phra Kaew is said to have moved to the Grand Palace compound when Rama 1 (then a Thai general) managed to seized back the buddha during a war against Laos. Today, it is housed in a magnificent Wat.

Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew: FIRST GLIMPSE OF THE GRAND PALACE
  • Tip Rating:
  • On my second visit to Bangkok I had a chance to go and see this amazing mass of buildings, temples, shrines and of course the palace itself.
The architecture is stunning as well as the long history that comes with it. I was very surprised at the vast display of weapons at the weapons museum. All kinds of Asian and Western models are on hand to view.
During my visit to see the Buddha here, there was a mass collection of people in worship, so I couldn't get very close. The site itself was something to behold, however.
While you visit the many areas of the Grand Palace, you can't help but notice how much time and effort it must have taken to create such a place.

Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew: Wat Phra Kaew decor
  • Tip Rating:
  • Walking through Wat Phra Kaew, one is constantly beleaguered with vast amounts of gold inlay, and images of warfare all throughout the numerous wall paintings... These obsessions with gold and the glorification of warfare have nothing whatsoever to do with the Buddha's teachings but that is beside the point... What's important is that the Thai government makes 200 baht per person on all this... The aesthetic is all very nice if you find extreme gaudiness attractive... I guess Jeff Koons would feel right at home here... Pictured here, one of the numerous gold war chariots...

First of all: don't believe anybody who tells you that the palace is closed on the day that you're there. Usually it's a taxi driver who tries to persuade you to come with him. He'll probably take you around the city and drop you off at several shops where you almost feel obliged to buy things.

You can stroll around the palace for hours and enjoy the magnificent structures. The various gardens are extremely well maintained and very impressive.

You'll need at least two hours to see the most important sights of the palace. Make sure you get a copy of a map of the area at the entrance so you can easily navigate yourself around.

Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew: The Palace..... must
  • Tip Rating:
  • Its a sight that you'll never regret....

    You can do the following
    (1) Elect to have to get a guide. MAKE SURE you check the rate the guide charges, PER PERSON. Our guide told us initially - Baht 100 - to be our guide BUT we later found out it was Baht 100 PER PERSON.

    (2) Not to have a guide. There is a Self Guide Tour audio facility which is near to the ticketing boot. It's about 10 steps away from where you buy your tickets. You only pay a Deposit of Baht100 and leave your Passport/credit card as security. And off you go.
I was there on my second visit to the palace and used the audio facility. It was fun and more informative then my first trip.

My advice - Do Get the Self guide.
Don't foget to take the River Boat too. Its an experience

Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew: Wat Pra Kaeo
  • Tip Rating:
  • Wat Pra Kaeo or Temple of the Emerald Buddha is a little too glittery and decorated for my taste, but nontheless this is a masterpiece! It is filled with gold and shiny inlays, with the sun shining on it, it can hurt your eyes ;-) Beautiful use of colors and very interesting architecture. I love the shiny blue tiled roof! The compound is quite large, but at this wat there are no monks living on the compound.

It is required to cover your shoulders, legs, and don't wear flip-flops, they also do not allow every type of sandal, so to be sure you wear sneakers to this place. There is a possibillity to rent clothes and some type of sandal, but you have to pay for it, and stand in line when it is busy, it is much easier to come prepared!
