    The Backpackers Capital of Asia!

And who would miss walking along this street, even at least once during their visit in BKK?

Long before the movie of Leonardo DiCaprio (The Beach) was partly shot in this street, Khaosan Road is already a famous landmark in the Banglamphoo area of Bangkok. It's maybe the first thing that would come up on any backpackers' mind about Bangkok. Tavelers on a budget would definitely choose to spend either their first night or the whole time they are in this city here in Khaosan Road. Cheapest accommodations can be found here, although lately there sprung a lot of mid-range hotels that offers comfort in comparable to star-rated hotels in other areas of the city.

You can find the cheapest food along the street in US$ cents - street noodles at US$0.12, fresh local orange juice in plastic bottles at US$0.12 to 0.24, chicken or beef BBQ at US$0.50. The backpackers "uniform" shirts and travel gears are all here, all those counterfeit stuff, clothings, headcaps, silverwares, syndicated CDs, travel agents for air, train & bus tickets and package tours... and YES.... hair-braiding, body piercing and tatoos .... along the street!

The market scene of Khaosan during the daytime is transformed to street bars at night.

Khaosan is like a small municipality in itself for backpackers around the world.

Khao San Road has been the meeting point for backpackers from all over the world for many years. Here you find everything you might possibly need: cheap accommodation, great street food, travel agencies, souvenirs & jewellery shops, tailors, massage parlor, yoga studios...
At night lots of "minibars" open on the street where you can buckets full of Thai whiskey, coke and whatever.
But Khao Road has changed quite a lot over the years, these days you find American coffee shops and fast food outlets here aswell a some mid-range hotels.

A good place to be! and meet people from all over the world!! A great nightlife, a small bazaar and a lot of tourist office. If you like to see and more travellers like you then Khao San Road is the right place. If you like to see Thai people Khao San is not the right place.

    KHAO SAN ROAD: backpacker's heaven

Is located in the Banglamphu neighborhood (Phra Nakhon district), Khao san means 'raw rice' in Thai. Before it became a tourist hotspot, the street was a major rice market for Bangkok.

Crafts, paintings, clothes, pirate CDs, DVDs, fake educational diplomas, fake driver's licenses, food, second hand books as well as many items useful to backpackers are among the common goods traded along the road.

Khaosan road has in recent years also become popular among local people, especially artists and art students. The road hosts a number of pubs and bars, where people of many nationalities meet and discuss their travels.

It is one of Bangkok's most vibrant streets, host to people from around the world. One Thai writer described the road as "a short road that has the longest dream in the world." Any visit to Bangkok is incomplete without a people-watching beer on Khaosan.

    the scene at Khao San

This is a fun place to be the evening. Located nearby to Wat Phra Kaew -in the north of the city. Khao San is full of backpacker guest houses and hostels. The place is more for farangs than local Thais. Mostly full of tourists. Full of bars, coffee shops and henna tattoo parlors. There are some nice stalls, where people sell jewerly and tshirts. On the street you will see musicians trying to make a few bucks. At the end of the street-there are a bunch of food hawkers, which will sell some yummy Thai goods.

    Khao San Road

I suppose most backpackers come to Khao San Road at some point on ther journey in Bangkok. I never stayed there, as my friend had an apartment in a different area of the city, but Thanon Khao San is still worth seeing. Not because it's in any way authentic, it's rather a melting bowl on the generic backpacker-vision. Bars, Hostels, small shops. It's a place buzzing with life and mainly western such.

Have I mentioned that I don't care how touristy it is, I still love Khao San Road!!? You just never know what you are going to see there.

When I took my sister to Thailand, we happened to be at Khao San during shooting of a Bollywood movie, starring Amitabh Bachan! It was awesome to watch - and invade. They kept asking us to move - very politely of course! - can't see why! "You are in the frame" ...... "yeah, that's the idea!..."

The street was tranformed from Thai and tourist occupied to Indian actors, crew and onlookers. Action and gorgeous men everywhere. Why would you want to be anywhere else!?

This road is the centrepiece for the backpackers from all over the world. However, it also partly represents the opposite extreme of western culture along with the weirdest people and culture.

It is totally not funny for a single woman traveller from mainland China as the stuff I see on this street is totally something I had never experienced in my country, so many people with tatoos, pierces and dyed color made me wondered what I should do here and how I could survive from it (as I was the only one from mainland China on this street on that day). For seeing this road somehow was stunning and shocking to me (it could because i had never seen so many foreigners in my entire life before).

Will I get lost in this so-called paradise?

Take the time to visit Khao San Road even if you're not staying in this area. The place is teeming with backpackers and young people and locals selling food and knick knacks on the streets. The atmosphere is quite heady and so much fun if you keep your wits about you.

    Khao San Road at Night

Well known from the film "the Beach" with Leonardo Di Caprio. Here you find all the road sellers, bars, cafes that you want.
The Road used to be a secret tip for the Backpacker community, but got a tourist destination by itself in the last years.

After 5 p.m. the road is closed for traffic and becomes a pedestrian mile.

There are many guest houses, hotels etc here or close by. The location makes it a good starting point into Bangkoks Old Town. In walking distance from the Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, the Khlongs.

Bangkok's Khao San Road is the central backpackers area of the city. For cheap accommodation and backpacker envirement, many young people head here. Transportation to all over SEAsia overland can be bought from KSR. There are also many cheap goods and places to sell your old not needed stuff.

lifely scene of Kao San road at night time
    2 more images

if you suddenly appeared at Kao San Road, you must be mistakenly thinking that you are somewhere in western country. Look around, you will find that most of the people (>70%) are foreigners or farangs... with the western style bar, restaurant, etc... everywhere is lifely... along the main street, you can see people doing shoping from the street stalls, people having their hair set, tasting the local foods, etc.
Look carefully at the row of shops, most of them are travel agents, arranging your short and long term travel, getting you budget hostel, getting you bus/train/flight/taxi/cow ticket... almost everything you can ask them to arrange for you...
But if you wanted to experience the local life, go other places...

This is a relief to the Patpong area, a Must-Do on the backpacker, and got even a trendy touristic place because of the "Beach" movie with Leonardo Di Caprio. Though I heard the Khao San Road already was a famous area before the "Beach" movie shot some parts here. I loved the Khao San Road, the street so alive with the spiritual touch ... and so many backpackers, even it is touristy, crowded and noisy.

Maybe close to the river, untypically Bangkok spheres and crowded with Hippie-like entertainments that's the reason the area attracts tourists looking for good to reach and cheap accomodations, night-market, anything-cheap-to-buy place, fine food, bars, coffee shops ... and ofcourse a lot of fun! All matters that travellers love ... me included!

the best place to hang out

by apoldapol Written Nov 3, 2010

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I really enjoyed hanging out in this street. There are lots of shops, street buys, local items and gift items, restaurants and bars. It is very busy especially at night when the lights are on. You can try pad thai here and other street food. You can also have a beer or two and it is just cheap. There are also stalls here where you can book tours for the various tourist spots in bangkok like the kanchanaburi tour, floating market, etc. When you book your tours here, it is really cheap compared to the packages they give at the hotels. You should definitely visit this place.
