A GREAT PLACE TO CHILL OUT FROM THE HECTIC PACE OF BANGKOK LIFE IS LUMPINI PARK,
NAMED AFTER THE BIRTHPLACE OF BUDDHA THIS PARK IS RIGHT IN THE CENTRE OF THE CITY.
NO MATTER WHAT TIME OF DAY YOU COME THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING GOING ON..
LIKE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING WHEN THE PARK IS AT ITS QUITEST YOU CAN WATCH AS LOCALS YOUNG AND OLD PRACTICE THEIR THAI CHI. ALSO AT THIS TIME JOGGERS POUND THEIR WAY AROUND THE FOOTPATHS THAT SNAKE AROUND THE PARK.
WE USED THE PARK IN THE AFTERNOONS AND IT WAS GREAT TO FIND A TREE AND LIE IN THE SHADE AND READ OR JUST WATCH THE WORLD GO BY. I THOUGHT COMING ACROSS THIS PARK WAS A REAL FIND AND IN A CITY AS MAD AS BANGKOK ITS GREAT TO HAVE THIS PLACE TO SPEND AN HOUR OR SO TO CATCH YOUR BREATH AND REST YOUR WEARY FEET, AND I CANT THINK OF A NICER PLACE TO DO IT IN...SO NEXT TIME YOUR IN BANGKOK TAKE TIME OUT TO STROLL AROUND THIS VERY PLEASANT OASIS IN THE HEART OF THE BIG CITY.

One really great place to take your wife or girlfriend is to the Goverment Own Jewelry Store. Here you will see the Jewelry being made from start to finish and then you can go into this huge room full of the most wonderfull gems i have yet seen. Everything is for sale and if have a good eye you can get some great buys. Take your time and don't hurry they are not going to sell out of stock. Stop and go have a free coffee or juice and make your pick after that, that way you will make the best buy. They also have a really good gift store as well, some nice things there to buy for folks back home.
Just don't upset the gaurd at the front door, his guns are for real and are locked and loaded.

Lumphini Park is right in the centre of Bangkok. We got there by taking the skytrain to Sala Daeng Station which was fine, but you have to cross a couple of busy roads to get there. I notice the metro station exits straight into the park, no roads to cross.
Lumphini Park is a huge, peaceful green expanse with several lakes. You can hire boats, stroll, jog, watch people do tai chi, have a picnic (minus alcohol - according to park signs), look at the sculptures and best of all look at the huge monitor lizards that call the park home. There are lots of these. We saw about six or seven and we were only there about an hour. I knew nothing about these lizards before I got to the park, so the first one was a bit of a shock. Once you realize they are not going to eat you, they are great. really beautiful. They wander around on land, but are also great swimmers, so you'll see them going in and out of the lakes.

The park is always worth a visit if you want a break from the noisy city, but dont expect anything spectacular from the park itself. If you want to do something a bit out of the ordinary the join on of the gym/arobic sessions there. Its free, and its quite fun... though u might stand out between all the thais. Last time i was there the arobics started at 6 pm (week days), but of course this is subject to change...

This is an amazing and big park in the Central of Bangkok and it´s actually one the few green longs in the city. So especially when it´s really hot it´s nice to go there and relax under one of the trees.

After tired of sightseeing and shopping in Bangkok, take a rest to cool down at Lumpini Park. Especially when you are exhausted shopping at Silom street or Suan Lum night bazaar which located just accross the street.
In the afternoon/evening, many people use the park also for jogging and any other sports activities.
There are some small lakes in the park where you can rent a paddle boat for your romantic time with your beloved one.

Kick boxing is the nationale sport in Thailand.
You can like this sport or not, but it is a "Must see" - fight in the Lumpini Park in Bangkok:
- all this fights,
- the whole ambient,
- people betting till the last moment of fight,
- sounds,
- smelt,
- ...
In one word: Fantastic.
But...

Music in the park is another activity arranged by Bangkok Metropolitan. Every weekend around 5.30 PM until 8-9 PM in some public parks in Bangkok such as "SuanLumpini" or "Suan SantiChaiPhrakan" (Suan = park)there're small concerts free of charge for everyone.Music style depends on each season.Could be from Jazz ...Orchestra from university ..to contemporary Thai music.
Bands are changing every week.At the moment is season of "Era of Thai music" but not always traditional Thai music though. It could be contemporary (mixed Thai-western music) too.
Recline and relax on the green grass to listen to music is interesting for lazy weekend, isn't it?
Update : Feb 2007
From this weekend upward. It will be Thai traditional music concerts. Go check it out!

When I visit this place at August 2003, the front of this monument is still under construction. Nice place to visit and hang-out in the evening before the night fall.
