I really don't recommend putting the National Gallery on top of your Bangkok travel list - unless you are really a diehard Thai art fan - which, even that, to my untrained sensibilities - may be hard to be satiated. The main reason I came here was proximity to where I was staying at Khao San road.
But having said that, there are some interesting things to see here. Examples: the portraits and photos of Thai royalty, the artwork by the current monarch, King Bhumibol, and the main building itself which is a beautifully-restored colonial building. And don't forget the installation art on the museum courtyard.
