Wat Pho: Wat Po or Wat Phra Chetuphon.
This wonderful temple is the oldest temple of the city, and was founded in the 17th century. Rama III enlarged the temple and constructed the reclining Buddha in 1832. This Buddha is the tourists main reason to visit the place, but there are more things to see, the Mondop, The Chedis of the four kings, the Ubosot with its impressive cloister. When i visited the place last september, the compound was under a big restoration work, so mostly of the temples were covered with scaffolds.

    Wat Pho: Reclining Buddha
Very cool, well worth the visit, just get in line and remove your shoes. People are taking lots of pictures so the line can move slow.

Wat Pho: Buck-up your feet with a massage
Visit Wat Po to see the reclining Buddha. Be prepared to be very impressed - it is HUGE !!.

The rest of the Wat is very interesting and beautifully decorated with ceramic mosaics etc.

There are a large number of Buddha statues in varying attitudes.

The massage area is in 2 halls against the outer wall. The halls although hig-ceilinged, are not air conditioned and can get a bit steamy, but for all that, the experience of being massaged by a properly trained Thai masseur is not to be missed

    Wat Pho: WAT PHO
WAT PHO (Reclining Buddha), is located behind the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It's the largest temple in Bangkok and famed for its huge and majestic reclining Buddha measured 46 metres long and covered in gold leaf. The Buddha's feet are 3 metres long and exquisitely decorated in mother-of-pearl illustrations of auspicious 'laksanas' of the Buddha.

Wat Pho is also famous as Thailand's first university, and is center for traditional Thai masage - the rich, famous and powerful have all been known to come here. If you've never tried a traditional Thai massage, Wat Pho is a good place to start. It's quite different to most other forms of therapeutic massage and tends to be invigorating rather than relaxing, incorporating yoga style postures to relieve stress and improve blood circulation.

  • Directions: Boat: Tha Tien boat pier Aircon buses: no 6, 8 and 12 all stop close to Wat Pho Ordinary buses : no 1, 25, 44, 47, 62 and 91 which stop on Maharat road, no 44, 47 and 91 all stop on Thaiwang road, on the north side of Wat Pho, south of Wat Phra Kaew.

WAT PHO HOME TO THE RECLINING BUDDHA IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE SITES YOU WILL SEE IN BANGKOK...WHEN I FIRST SAW IT IT REALLY TOOK MY BREATH AWAY BY ITS SHEAR SIZE, I KNEW IT WOULD BE BIG BUT IT REALLY IS BIG !!.
THIS GOLD PLATED BUDDAH IS 46 METERS LONG AND SOME 15 METERS HIGH IF I REMEMBER THE GUIDES WORDS, AND IS DESIGNED TO ILLUSTRATE THE PASSING OF BUDDHA INTO NIRVANA. OVERALL THERE ARE OVER A THOUSAND BUDDHA IMAGES AT WAT PHO.
ALSO AT WAT PHO IT IS POSSIBLE TO GET A TRADITIONAL THAI MASSAGE, PRICES ARE 150BHT FOR THIRTY MINUTES AND 250BHT FOR AN HOUR.
A NICE WAY TO END A TRIP TO THIS VERY SPECIAL PLACE.

Wat Pho: Visit Wat Pho - Home of the Reclining Buddha
Wat Pho is Bangkok's oldest temple, dating back to the 17th century, and is home to a massive statue of a reclining Buddha. The statue is 45-meters long and depicts Buddha entering Nirvana. Among other things, the Buddha boasts a 5-meter long smile and black-soled feet inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Like the city's other famous temples, Wat Pho is extremely popular, and it may seem as if every other tourist in Bangkok is there when you are.

    Wat Pho: Visit Wat Pho.
Wat Pho is also known as the "Temple of the Reclining Buddha". There you can see the 48m long reclining golden buddha. Its feet have mother of pearl inlaid in the soles.
The temple is quite expansive and well worth an amble around.

Wat Pho is famous for its giant Reclining Buddha. The temple was created as a restoration of an earlier temple on the same site, Wat Phodharam, the work beginning in 1788. The temple was restored and extended in the reign of King Rama III, and was restored again in 1982.

Wat Pho is the largest and oldest wat in Bangkok, and is home to more than one thousand Buddha images, more than any other temple in the country. The Reclining Buddha was made as part of Rama III's restoration. It is 46 meters long and 15 meters high, decorated with gold plating on its body and mother of pearl on its eyes and the soles of its feet. The latter display 108 auspicious scenes in Chinese and Indian styles.

The temple is also known as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage. Even prior to the temple's founding, the site was a centre of education for traditional Thai medicine, and statues were created showing yoga positions. During the Rama III restoration plaques inscribed with medical texts were placed around the temple, while in 1962 a school for traditional medicine and massage was established.

Entrance is 20B. It's open every day, opening hours are from 08.00am to 5.00pm, with a break from 12.00pm to 1.00pm.
