  • Incredibly beautiful craftmanship at this temple with the use of a lot of coulours and very small ornaments all around. And not to forget the immense Reclyning Bhudda on which feet lessons are incripted because the Wat Pho was originally the first "universtity" of Thailand.

Wat Pho: Wat Pho: very serene atmosphere

  • Wat Pho was the first temple I visited. I was surprised that the temple complex was that huge! You can easily spend an hour checking everything out. The main reason why tourists come here is the Reclining Buddha which is 46 metres long! There are also four large Chedis commemorating the first three Chakri Kings ( Rama III has two Chedis). If you would like to get a real Thai massage, then the best place to do this is here. At What Po you can find the national headquarters for the teaching of traditional Thai medecine, including Thai massage. The Wat was built during the 16th Century and almost completely rebuilt in the 18th.

    Wat Pho: The Reclyning Bhudda
  • Tip Rating:
  • A very huge lying Bhudda at the Wat Po which was the first university in Bangkok. On the feet of this giant you will find lessons for the scholars a long time ago.

    Wat Pho: Reclining Buddha
  • Tip Rating:
  • Wat Pho is one of the must-see Buddhist temple in Bangkok. It is one of the largest and oldest. The reclining Buddha is about 46 meters in length and 15 meters in height. Notice on the soles of the Buddha are 108 auspicious signs engraved with in-laid mother of pearl. As in all Buddhist temples, remember to take off your shoes.

  • Wat Pho (Wat Phra Chetuphon) or "The Temple of Reclining Buddha" It is located south of the Grand Palace in Bangkok. It is one of Bangkok's oldest and largest temples. Wat Pho was built by King Rama I nearly 200 years ago and houses the 46 meters long and 15 meters height reclining Buddha image which is the second largest reclining Buddha in the country. The most interesting feature of this image is "the inlaid mother-of-pearl design on the sole of the feet showing the 108 auspicious signs arrayed in 67 small squares around the 'chakra' or a disc at the center". The compound of Wat Pho is divided into two sections. The southern part is for the resident monks. The northern part includes a large Wihan, a large bot (ubosot) or a ordination hall. The inner and outer galleries are lined with 788 Buddha images of various styles. This is "the largest collection of Buddha images in Thailand". Wat Pho is the center for the teaching and preservation of traditional Thai medicine and Thai massage. King Rama III wanted this temple "to be a center of learning for the general public and had texts on various subjects inscribed on stone slabs for public study as seen today". Wat Pho is also regarded as the first centre of public education and is sometimes called "Thailand's First University". The temple has 95 stupas of various sizes. The four large stupas were built on separate occasions to commemorate the first four kings of the Chakri Dynasty. Location: Maharat Rd. Close to the river (about a half mile south of the Grand Palace. Open: Daily 8am-5pm (Massage available until 6pm) Admission fee: 20 Baht.

Wat Pho, also called Wat Phra Chetuphon, is the largest and oldest Wat in Bangkok. The vast complex houses both the largest reclining Buddha (46 meters long and 15 meters high) and the most Buddha images (more than 1000) in Thailand. The temple architecture is some of the finest anywhere and there are several towering ceramic covered chedis (spires). The giant gold reclining Buddha is definitely the highlight. Its feet and eyes are engraved with mother-of-pearl decoration, and it barely fits into the giant temple that houses it.

    Wat Pho: Monks' Bowls
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just around the corner behind the Reclining Buddha's inlaid feet is a counter where you can pay to get coins to drop in these bowls. I don't remember how much you give and what the sign says it's for but I'm assuming it's for the monks because these look like monks' bowls. You drop coins in each bowl until you reach the last one and run out of coins.

  • Wat Pho is the oldest and largest wat in Bangkok. The reclining buddha, measuring 46meters long and 15meters high with mother of pearl inlays in its huge feet and eyes. When visiting the temple, like most of Thailand's temples, please be appropriately dressed. There was a lady who walked in front of us wearing shorts shorter than most underwear and a tight top and she was tapped on the shoulder by one of the temple's guards. She wasn't bothered though. Not even slowing down, she whipped out a folded sarong out of her handbag and voila, she was ready to go in.

Wat Pho isn't just about the Reclining Buddha. It has been known as the center for health and the first university in Thailand. You can get a Thai massage or learn the art of traditional Thai massage in a 10-15 day course. The back of the Buddha's head is just as photogenic as the front. I like the details of his hair? or whatever it is that's supposedly on his head.

The visitors can see their pretty Buddhis fine arts and the big buddha inside the temple. I read that the Reclining Buddha was built in 1832 in the reign of King Rama III. It's purpose was to remind the people to think of the buddha's Nirvana! Opens daily from *8:00am to 5:00pm. Admission Fee is 20 baht/person.
