Wat Pho: Wat Pho's Farang Guards
  • Tip Rating:
  • When i saw those, i thought they were clowns... Actually, these are caricatures of Westerners with big noses and beard. Seems like 200 years later...things haven't changed ! The way my ancestors colonized Siam in the 19th century...that caricature is well deserved : )

Wat Pho’s main calling card is the Reclining Buddha. The massive figure overpowers you on first sight, logging in at 46 meters long by 15 meters high. Representing the passing of Buddha to Nirvana, the entirety of the plaster structure is covered in gold leaf. The most impressive feature is the feet which is ornately decorated in mother of pearl.

    Wat Pho: Reclining Buddha's Feet
  • Tip Rating:
  • The reclining Buddha's feet are famously made up of extravagant mother of pearl inlay... And while on the subject, you can also get a foot massage at Wat Pho... There is an actual traditional Thai foot massage school right on the grounds of the temple... 30 minutes for 180 baht... Shogen asked: `Why does the enlightened man not stand on his feet and explain himself?' And he also said: `It is not necessary for speech to come from the tongue.'

This is one of my favorite places in Bangkok and my favorite wat. The reclining Buddha is stunning. You have to see all the wonderful temple murals that line the building he resides in. In the large complex, you will see lovely chedis, decorated with smashed Chinese porcelain(used this for ballast in their ships) and carved the pieces into flowes and various designs. There are four large chedis, which contain remains of the first three Chakri kings, plus many small ones throughout the wat. You have to see the farang statues(foriegners). The temple is known for their traditional massage center. I didn't do this, but you can get a Thai massage here. Maybe a nice touch end of the day, after you have seen Wat Pho and Wat Phra Kaew (which is right next door).

Close to the banks of Chao Phraya River, this significant Wat is used as a public information and education center. The golden Recling Buddha is 46 meteres long, and is an impressive sight. There are two compounds to this wat, the northern side being the side that is open to visitors. The southern side is a Buddhist monastary. A university for traditional Thai massage is part of the public compound (we found it to be a little expensive). With approximately 1000 Buddha images, it is an impressive sight and a testament to Thai history and culture.

    Wat Pho: Wat Po
  • Tip Rating:
  • Wat Po, known to the Thais as Wat Phra Chetupon, dates from long before Bangkok was founded, as it was built in the 16th century. It became a favourite with the early Chakri kings who turned it into the country's largest monastery. Wat Po's major attraction is the massive Reclining Buddha, 46 meters long, whose feet are decorated with exquisite mother-of-pearl inlay.

for "Peaceful life" Wat Pho is most famous for the golden reclining Buddha that measues 46 metres and has feet inlaid with mother-of pearl. But don't forget to visit the main church inside, you will truly find the peace and beautiful of life.

    Wat Pho: Reclining Buddha immage
  • Tip Rating:
  • The world famous Reclining Buddha immage is found in Wat Pho, in Bangkok, next to the royal palace. The Buddha immage is incredible. It is much larger and beautiful then one can immagine. MAKE SURE TO LOOK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FEET, YOU'LL SEE WHY!! You must take your shoes off before entering the room where the immage is located, there are tons of people there and you can put your shoes on a numbered shelf.

When you visit the Reclining Buddha there is a Thai custom to place 112 coins in the lucky 112 jugs. This will cost you 20 Baht and all the money is donated to good causes (I know, and hope). You will see black pots to place the coins in, one coin per pot/jug. It's just a fun and interesting local custom at Wat Pho (where the Reclining Buddha immage is).
