  • Wat Po - Bangkok
    Wat Po
    by yen_2
Wat Po, known to the Thais as Wat Phra Chetupon, dates from long before Bangkok was founded, as it was built in the 16th century. It became a favourite with the early Chakri kings who turned it into the country's largest monastery. Wat Po's major attraction is the massive Reclining Buddha, 46 meters long, whose feet are decorated with exquisite mother-of-pearl inlay.

The huge statue of the reclining Buddha inside the Wat Pho temple is really impressive.
Needless to say, it is the largest reclining Buddha in the world: 46 mt long and 15 mt high. Impossible to take a picture of it all, as the space around is limited. I just could take a shot of one foot.

The world famous Reclining Buddha immage is found in Wat Pho, in Bangkok, next to the royal palace. The Buddha immage is incredible. It is much larger and beautiful then one can immagine. MAKE SURE TO LOOK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FEET, YOU'LL SEE WHY!! You must take your shoes off before entering the room where the immage is located, there are tons of people there and you can put your shoes on a numbered shelf.

Wat Pho is among the most famous and beautiful wats in Bangkok, and all of Thailand. This wat is home to the huge Reclining Buddha, as well as many other large and beautiful Buddha immages. There are many smaller sturctures and buildings as well to be explored.

Wat Pho temple, also known as Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is famous for the huge statue inside.
Anyway, it is an interesting building also from the outside: it has been built by King Rama I at the end of the 18th century and it is one of the oldest and largest temple in Bangkok.
The traditional massage school close to the temple is famous through all Thailand and state of the art massages are performed at a reasonable price.

  • Placing the coins in the jugs - Bangkok
    Placing the coins in the
    jugs
    by SumTingWong
When you visit the Reclining Buddha there is a Thai custom to place 112 coins in the lucky 112 jugs. This will cost you 20 Baht and all the money is donated to good causes (I know, and hope). You will see black pots to place the coins in, one coin per pot/jug. It's just a fun and interesting local custom at Wat Pho (where the Reclining Buddha immage is).

This is the oldest and largest wat in Bangkok. If you only have time to visit one wat, do visit this one.
The whole complex of buildings, chedi etc is very impressive.
This is also the headquarters where traditional Thai medicine is thought, including Thai massage.
One of the highlights of visiting Wat Pho, must be the reclining Buddha (see next tip)

The oldest and largest Buddhist temple in Bangkok is the Wat Pho, located beside the Grand Palace. Most of the city tours offered in Bangkok cover the whole area that comprises the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Temple of the Emeral Buddha, and the Temple of the Golden Buddha in the Ko Rattanakosin area.

If Eiffel tower is to Paris, then Wat Po is to Bangkok! Sorry, I cannot think of any other structure. The first sight to be visited upon arrival in this fascinating city. The main attraction of this Wat (temple) is the largest gold-plated reclining image of Buddha measuring 46m length X 15m in height. The 3m-long feet of the Buddha have been inlaid with mother-of-pearl representing 108 different characteristics of the Buddha.

Wat Po is home to the best institution for learning traditional Thai massage, you can enrol in one if you're interested to learn it, lasts about a week or so. Masseurs around the courtyard will be willing to give you a sample of Thai massage, we actually made an appointment for two of them to come to to us the evening for a real traditional Thai massage. Gave me a good sleep after a tiring tour of the city.... while the massage is going on. Worth it!

In Wat Po, there's more to see than the huge Reclining Buddha. The surroundings of this temple have so much interesting stuff that you have to ask your guide (if you have one), like for example, there are those 95 Chedis (decorated in chinese ceramic tiles, the pyramid version of Thailand). The four Kings ashes (Rama 1 to 4) are housed in four of these Chedis. Fascinating in rows of glass encasings are the less than 400 images of Buddha around the courtyard.

After visiting Wat Po, you should not miss the other sights around and near it - i.e. the majestic Grand Palace of course is a must-see, Wat Phra Keaow (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) & Wat Trimitr (The Temple of the Golden Buddha).

Wat Pho is famous because of the giant reclining Buddha statue located inside. To see this giant statue, you pay 50 Baht. However, it is not so easy to take a picture which frames all the statue at once. You either sacrifice a part of the statue out of the frame or use your imagination to find the perfect angle to capture everything at one shot. The columns around the statue give hard time for catching different angles. You can also see many interesting structures around the temple. It is 10-15 minutes walking distance from Grand Palace so you can squeeze the visit to this temple while you come to Grand Palace.

Wow, it's really, really big! And, very, very gold! What a sight! It's not very far from the Grand Palace so you should see both on the same day to maximize your site seeing. After visiting one or the other, a tuk-tuk drivers might concoct a story that you can't visit the other temple just at that moment because of some national ceremony going on. He'll offer to take you to other sites and bring you back. Don't buy into this - see my Bangkok travel page for the tuk-tuk story. Anyway, this is definitely something you should see if you go to Bangkok. The temple grounds are also quite a sight to see as well.

When we were there, there was some speech over the PA system on the grounds. It appeared one of the monks were speaking about something. Other Thai people were sitting around or napping on the premises in designated areas. These areas were marked "For Thai People Only".
