The temple has a lof of buildings and chedis in the courtyard, it took me quite a while to check out the wat. The entrance to Wat Po is 20 Bath. While you're at it, please be appropriately attired. When I'm done with Wat Pho, I walked to Grand Palace and Phra Kaew, which is not far away from Wat Pho. Chedis or a prangs usually tops the temple buildings. While chedis are bell shaped and then crowned with a pointed spire, prangs taper up to a rounded tip. Leave a Comment Phone: 02-221-991Directions: The entrance to Wat Pho is on Chetuphon road. Wandering around the beautifully decorated chedi of Wat Pho you can almost forget you are in the bustling city of Bangkok, the rambling complex can sees more suited to a rural rather than urban setting. That is not to say that it doesn’t get busy but the largest wat in Thailand does allow you to find space for yourself. You are most likely to encounter other visitors and worshippers around the magnificent reclining Buddha. The statue is 151 feet (46m) long and covered in gold leaf, as you wander along its length you pass smaller shrines until, reaching the feet, you can let your gaze travel back towards the head and appreciate what a truly amazing object it is. The soles of the feet are inlaid with mother of pearl, and on the other side of the Buddha are 108 bronze bowls. Placing a coin in each of them is supposed to be auspicious and bring merit, if you don’t have 108 coins on you then for a small donation you can buy a pot of coins allowing you to complete the ritual. Take time to enter some of the smaller temple buildings surrounding the Reclining Buddha. In one we were invited to join other worshippers to shake fortune sticks, a memorable experience. Wat Pho exudes a sense of calm and contemplation, the perfect antidote for fraught senses. And for fraught bodies the complex is also a centre of traditional Thai medicine and massage. A great place to revive both body and soul. Leave a Comment Phone: 02-221-991Directions: The entrance to Wat Pho is on Chetuphon road. Entrance is 20B. Stray cats are allowed to roam freely around the Wat Pho temple grounds... Consequently, you can occasionally see feline excrements planted haphazardly throughout the place, just as seen in this picture here... Everything had a ridiculous logic: just as Paracelsus had found in excrement the antidote to the plague, the cats were trying to attain enlightenment by means of the Jungian alchemy of transforming excrement into gold...! Wat Pho, originally founded around the 16th century, is Thailand's largest and oldest wat, and contains the country's most recognizable icon, the infamous reclining gold Buddha, built in 1832, with the supposed purpose of reminding people to think of the Buddha's nirvana... But for all the millions of people that have visited here, not many really learn anything at all about moksha... Flaunting big gold statues just doesn't really inspire people to enlightenment somehow... But then, what difference does it make, as long as the government keeps getting that steady influx of tourist dollars? Now then. The main entrance of Wat Pho is... where all the huge tour buses are (Thai Wang Road), next to the white crenallated walls of the Grand Palace. But this back bit of Wat Pho rarely gets a look in by the tourists. You can sneak in around Maharat Road (Here's how to get there: stand with your back to the regular tourist main entrance of Wat Pho, head off to your left. 50 metres heading down to the river jetty, stop at the end of the road, don't cross the road (glance over it and you'll catch some nifty 19th century shophouses), instead hug the temple wall left as it goes around the corner. Bingo! Ten metres round the corner and there is a small gate way. In you go (not showing off your camera trying not to look like tourist). And you're in to the temple school area with some good Chinese derived shrines, neat salas, fountains and small water features, some quite subtle smaller sized chedis and... a basketball court (of course). You'll also see a few locals taking the time of day in here, treating the grounds as a sort of enclosed urban park. I was treated to four orange clad lads playing basketball; proving emphatically that Asian Men Monks Can Jump. It's dead quiet in here and way from the swarms of tourists. Costs you nothing. Leave a Comment Directions: On Maharat Road opposite the Chinese Style Shophouses and the Bangkok Bank.

We are now on the main tourist drag of Wat Arun, Grand Palace, and Wat Pho. If you only manage three dabs at Thai history and architecture these three are likely to appear on your itinerary. Understandable, they're dead good. Will take you about an afternoon to visit all three. Look out for the upcountry tour parties of monks on a day trip when you are doing Wat Pho - Bangkok often gets these visits around the religious days; Thai Lent, Lord Buddha's birthday and the like. These boys add atmosphere to the place. And as many festivals crop up in rainy season you'll get to see locals enjoying their own historical sites even if it is a tad moist out. For me, the best parts to Wat Pho are the extremely long reclining Buddha with his mother of pearl soles, and some rather nifty roof tops. You get the roof tops in this pic. You can go and see the Buddha for yourself... superb toes, promise (now there's something for you to look forward to). I'll throw this bit in here as well while I'm at it. Because we were talking about it when doing the Pho. If anyone tells you Bangkok is a dirty, treeless city kindly inform them they are not looking closely enough. We bet you will see more trees than you will see locals dropping litter. Leave a Comment Directions: Thai Wang Road, round the side of the Grand Palace.

I wanted to see the reclining Buddha... and I did :-) Buddha is huge and shining (golden)! I loved not only the reclining Buddha but also Wat Pho's shining architectures... such as small towers, main buildings etc. Their roof is very beautiful. The small towers have porcelain (bone china?) ornaments. They are very beautiful, too :-) Leave a Comment Phone: (662) 221-2974, 221-3686Directions: WAT Pho is located on Sanam Chai road and Maharaj road next to the Grand Palace. Entrance is 20B.
