I visited Wat Traimit during a visit to Bangkok in September 2007. Wat Traimit is located in Bangkok’s Chinatown district, about 5 – 10 minutes walk from Hua Lamphong MRTA station. In all honesty there is only one good reason to visit this temple - the world’s largest solid gold Buddha! The golden Buddha stands at 3 metres tall and weighs 5.5 tonnes. It was undiscovered until the 1950s, but then an outer layer of plaster began to peel away, exposing the solid gold icon beneath! Apparently, after this discovery, lots of other Buddha icons had their outer layers peeled away, but no others were found to be hiding solid gold figures. The temple itself was nothing special to look at from the outside, and was in fact closed when I visited. Instead, the majority of visitors pass by to the left of the temple and purchase their tickets to see the golden Buddha (20 Bahts) from a small kiosk. They then climb a flight of stairs to where the famous Buddha is located on the first floor of a modest pavilion. As well as the large and impressive centrepiece, there is also a host of smaller Buddhas with fake gold coverings in the pavilion. Next to the golden Buddha there is a counter selling postcards and other golden Buddha related souvenirs. Wat Traimit – the world’s largest solid gold Buddha! Wat Trai Mit or Temple of the Gold Buddha (wow we love gold buddhas in the philippines since Gen. Tomoyuki Yamashita brought golden buddha's in the philippines during world war 2 as war booty hence the fabled Yamashita Treasure!) is Located at the end of Chinatown's Yaowarat Road near Hualamphong Railway Station, this temple houses an ancient solid gold seated Buddha image of the Sukhothai Period. It is reputed to be the world's largest solid gold Buddha image. Weighing in at five and a half tons and three meters in height, the 15-foot tall seated image is worth in the neighborhood of US$14 Million. The Golden Buddha was cast sometime in the 13th century and is an excellent example of the gracious Sukhothai style that is still very much in favor to this day. At some point, it was covered in plaster, most likely in an attempt to hide the valuable icon from thieves or looters. The true nature of the Golden Buddha wasn't discovered until it was moved to its present location at Wat Traimit in 1955. When the image was being prepared for its move, some of the plaster was chipped off, revealing the gold underneath. Bits of the plaster can be seen in a case to the left of the statue. The statue sits in a plain building just barely big enough to hold it within the temple compound. On the terrace outside of the room housing the Golden Buddha are some interesting fortune-telling machines. You drop a coin in the slot and a sequence of lights indicating numbers flash around in a circle, wheel of fortune style, eventually stopping on a number. You can retrieve your fortune from the marked boxes below the machine. The fortune slips are in English as well as Thai and Chinese. Entrance is 20 Baht, payable at a booth near the wiharn housing the image. There is also a currency exchange in the same kiosk. Phone: 0-2623 1226Directions: The temple is also a very short distance from Hualamphong railway station, with its many food courts and easy transportation access.Website: www.thailandguidebook.com/wattraimit

Wat Traimit is one of the most important wats in Bangkok, mainly because of the statue of Lord Buddha that it houses, the well-known Golden Buddha. Not only is gold its outer layer, no. The whole Buddha is made of solid gold!!! The temple is close to Hualamphong Railway Station and you can take it as a startpoint of a walk around Chinatown. The building itself is cramped between other buildings, so it is difficult to take a good photo of the whole wat. The most impressive feature of this place is to think about the 5 tons of gold... Me and the Golden Buddha by SirRichard This temple was very near the Hualamphong Train Station. As you enter there is a big temple in the middle and the ticket office is on your left. I bought the ticket (though nobody was controlling the entrance) and climbed the steps at the left up to the small pavillion where the Golden Buddha is. It is very nice this medium sized Buddha all covered in gold. Around him you will find people offering flowers and little gold shhets to other smaller buddhas and monks statues. This wat is not the architecture of a big, big super-duper Bangkok Wat. In fact it is more like a chaotic small temple lobbed in the middle of the ChinaTown, almost a rambling two storey house affair. Its excellent! And up on the second floor (that's correct ? up on the second floor) is a five and a half ton solid golden Buddha. Five and a half tons. Gold. What is this Wat about? I?ll tell you. In the Sukkothai period (around the 1400s-1550s) the Thai People made this massive, huge, immense and very, very, very, expensive Buddha. The Burmese neighbours were playing up at that time - and getting all shirty. So our Thai people (in fear of the Burmese nipping in and nicking the Buddha ?and melting down the gold to fund nasty war faring peeps who would then be able to cause chaos in the rest of Thailand?) our Thai folk hid it. In clay / concrete! Then (like all lads who put their keys somewhere safe so no one will accidentally pick them up) the concrete encrusted Buddha got sort of lost. Enter the East Asiatic Company ? an import export, warehousing brigade from Europe ? who bought the house and inside got this ?clayish / concrete? Buddha. "Let?s lift it out of the way and make some room" said the CEO, and in the process the workers chipped the thing. The normal approach is for workers to ?flee the scene? of a work cock up - some did. Though some hung around and realised what was inside. The Five Plus Ton Golden Buddha. And they stuck it up on the second floor, charge 50THB to look at it, and everyone lived happily ever after. Except the Burmese. They woke up and found it was all a dream and had no money to fund overseas pillaging ? which is why the current Burmese junta stops at home and causes chaos in Rangoon. An interesting place is Wat Traimit, if only for the way the Buddha is placed in a pretty small room, and the side bits going on around it. Like a shrine to the abbot, the chipped concrete leftovers, a postcard seller, and the temple moneychanger. 40 minutes should see you fit. Leave a Comment Directions: Traimit Road end of Yaowarat Road close to the China Town area and near Hualamphong Railway Station. Open 9.00 - 5.00 everyday.
