The image is unrivalled in beauty, measuring 12 feet 5 inches in diameter and has a height of 15 feet 9 inches from the base to the crown, and it weighs approximately 5 tons. Now more than 700 years old, it is a valuable treasure of Thailand and of Buddhism.
Originally, this Golden Buddha Image was completely covered with plaster to conceal it from the enermy then invading Thailand and was installed as the principal Buddha Image in the main temple building of Choti-naram Temple or Wat Phrayakrai, Yannawa District, Bangkok in the third reign of the Chakkri Dynasty in the Ratanakosin era.
When Chotanaram temple was deserted in about 1931, the East Asiatic Company, with official permission, extended its operations into the land area of the deserted temple. The Ecclesiastical Commission then moved this golden Buddha image to the Traimit Witthayaram Temple where it now remains, discovering in 1955 that it was made of pure gold Leave a Comment

Near the Railway Station on Traimit Road on the edge of Chinatown is the Temple of the Golden Buddha. The Golden Buddha was discovered in 1953. A heavy but rather undistinguished Buddha image was being moved by crane when it fell to the ground and the outer layer cracked revealing five and a half tons of solid gold inside. The 700 to 800 years old golden statue had presumably been disguised to hide it from invaders from Burma. The building is open to the public everyday 9am-5pm.

It lies at juction of Thanon Yaowarat and Thanon Charoen Krung, at one end of Chinatown. Full of tourists, going to see the 3 m high statue of Budda made in 5 1/2 % tonns of gold. This statue is in Sukhotai style and was eventually discovered about 40 years ago when East Asiatic Company, that was extending the port if Bangkok, found a stucco statue of Budda. Obteneid concession to move, they used a crane but the statue fell revealing a solid gold statue. It is said that the stucco cover was made to protect the statue from thieves during Sukhotay period or burmese army, during Ayuthaya period. Leave a Comment Directions: Near Hualamphong Station

Originally ,this temple named Sam Jeen temple. In a big viharn housed a big golden buddha image which built in Sukhothai period. Not just an important Buddha image, this temple is one temple where Thai – Chinese people usually choose for cremation ritual or praying ritual for a person who passed away.

The gold Buddha image at Wat Traimit is closed to public viewing until the Thai new year - Songkran - in April 2009. It's really not worth your trouble - and the heat/noise of Chinatown - to travel to the temple right now. They are finishing an immense stupa in front to house the Buddha image.
To get here: EXIT 1 from the underground BTS Hua Lamphong Station. Walk left and cross over the streets/canal at the lights - then take a left on the first small street. After half a block - you'll see the temple on other side of the street (on the right of this one-way road). The first entrance is for the school. (If you're going when they re-open in April - and it's the hottest month of the year - just take a motorcycle taxi as you EXIT 1 - it's worth not getting lost in all the traffic/heat.)
Other attactions: As you exit the temple, go right and you'll see the famous Chinatown red gate. I'd recommend then taking a taxi to Sampeng Lane in Chinatown to walk around the shops here and onward toward the pier.
It's not recommended to walk from Wat Traimit to the shopping area of Chinatown because it's so easy to get lost! And the area is hot, dirty, smelly, and pedestrian-unfriendly. Leave a Comment Phone: 623 1226Directions: Near Hualamphong Station
