Wat Traimit

This temple is very cool and contains a huge golden buddha.

Apparently this statue was covered in concrete and buried to hide it from the invading Burmese. Many years later when the statue was long forgotten a workman trying to lift the statue out of its burial area accidentally smashed it against something. Once they noticed the gold through the concrete they realised that it was only to hide it.

Originally ,this temple named Sam Jeen temple. In a big viharn housed a big golden buddha image which built in Sukhothai period. Not just an important Buddha image, this temple is one temple where Thai – Chinese people usually choose for cremation ritual or praying ritual for a person who passed away.

Golden Buddha

Located at the end of Chinatown’s Yaowarat Road near the Bangkok Railway Station (Hua Lam Phong), this temple is known for its famous Golden Buddha, now more than 700 years old.

It is made of pure, solid gold and is 12 feet 5 inches in diameter and a height of 15 feet 9 inches and weighs approximately 5 and a 1/2 tons.

Me and the Golden Buddha

This temple was very near the Hualamphong Train Station.
As you enter there is a big temple in the middle and the ticket office is on your left. I bought the ticket (though nobody was controlling the entrance) and climbed the steps at the left up to the small pavillion where the Golden Buddha is.

It is very nice this medium sized Buddha all covered in gold. Around him you will find people offering flowers and little gold shhets to other smaller buddhas and monks statues.

Wat Traimit

This is a cool Buddha statue as it is 5? tons of solid Gold! There is a neat story behind the "discovery" of the Buddha image too. Sometime in the last few hundred years it was hidden under a plaster covering to hide it from invaders and it was apparently forgotten about. I don't know how would forget about your 5? ton solid Gold Buddha but it was. Then sometime in the 1960's the plaster covered Buddha was being moved and the outer covering fell off to reveal what was insided!! Finders Keepers??? Better to arrive here early before the tour buses show up. The first visitors are allowed in at 9:00 am.
This Temple is kind of a weird place in my opinion. Because there is a Money Changer right on the grounds of the Temple. What for? Maybe so you can give donations? On most of my visits the other tourists are very aware of the smallness of the room that houses the Buddha. Everyone seems to stand to the side and everyone takes turns snapping their photos. It has always seemed to work out pretty good.
Wat Traimit is quite easy to find as it is near the Hualamphong train station. It is good to combine a visit to Wat Traimit with Chinatown as they are quite close together.

Temple of the Golden Buddha

The Temple of the Golden Buddha contains a solid gold Buddha image that weighs 5.5 tonnes and is 3m high.
The story goes that it was covered with plaster to stop it being stolen by the Burmese in the Sukhothai period. The statue was forgotten about for a long time but moved with a crane in the mid part of the 20th century. While being moved it was knocked and some of the plaster came off, revealing the gold underneath.
It is quite impressive but even more impressive, in this 1987 photo, is me with a 28" waist, not an ounce of fat and no grey hair.

The golden Buddha in Wat Traimit

The Wat Traimit temple is nothing special from the outside, but is famous for the big Golden Buddha statue.
The statue itself is 800 years old and maybe it is not a masterwork, but.. yes, it is solid gold: more than 5 tons. The world largest golden statue.
For a few centuries the statue was covered with white stucco and maybe for this reason (besides its weight) it did not disappear during the Burmese invasion.

GOLDEN BUDDHA IMAGE

GOLDEN BUDDHA IMAGE (WAT TRAIMITWITTHAYARAM). This Sukhothai Traimit Golden Buddha Image is the largest Buddha Image in the world. The Buddha Image is in the mara conquering attitude, the typical artistic style of the days when Sukhothai was the capital of Thailand. It is made of pure gold.

The image is unrivalled in beauty, measuring 12 feet 5 inches in diameter and has a height of 15 feet 9 inches from the base to the crown, and it weighs approximately 5 tons. Now more than 700 years old, it is a valuable treasure of Thailand and of Buddhism.

Originally, this Golden Buddha Image was completely covered with plaster to conceal it from the enermy then invading Thailand and was installed as the principal Buddha Image in the main temple building of Choti-naram Temple or Wat Phrayakrai, Yannawa District, Bangkok in the third reign of the Chakkri Dynasty in the Ratanakosin era.

When Chotanaram temple was deserted in about 1931, the East Asiatic Company, with official permission, extended its operations into the land area of the deserted temple. The Ecclesiastical Commission then moved this golden Buddha image to the Traimit Witthayaram Temple where it now remains, discovering in 1955 that it was made of pure gold
