Emerald Buddha

Wat Phra Kaew which houses the Emerald Buddha is one of the World’s great sights!
The Emerald Buddha sits on 11-meter tall platform and protected by a tiny umbrella.
It serves as the Royal Chapel and it’s the Thais most revered object of worship. No admission fee.

Always remember to behave respectfully when visiting the temples so as not to offend locals/ people giving worship. Also dress appropriately, no sleeveless shirts/shorts. If asked to remove shoes or slippers upon entering, just follow.

46meters Reclining Buddha
3 more images

Wat Phra Chetuphon or also known as the Reclining Buddha is located within the Wat Pho, it is the largest and oldest temple in Bangkok. It is gold plated, 46 meters long and 15 meters high. A reclining buddha designed to demonstrate the passing of the Buddha into Nirvana.

Entrance fee is free. You just have to wear something decent, long sleeves are permitted so you can go inside the temple. The temple is sacred so just be silent and show respect while inside since people come here to pray.

Located in front of Wat Suthat this swing is not for playing but actually this one is a religious structure in Bangkok used for the Swing ceremony. The pillars of the swing represent the mountains and the circular base represents the earth and the ocean. During the ceremony Brahmins swing to grab a bag of coins placed on one of the pillars.

King Rama III Memorial…

King Rama III Memorial,Wat Ratchanadda,Bangkok.

This tiny and meticulously maintained park like space provides a kind of “Grand Entrance” to the Loha Prasat as it sits just in front of the gated access to the temple or Out

It’s not really a park as per se because there are no benches to sit and relax on and the only shade trees found here are found along the busy Ratchadamnoen Avenue but there are lovely gardens that thrive in the hot sun.

The focal point of the memorial is a statue of King Rama III set amidst stone paver walkways and nicely manicured plants and small decorative trees. The statue is of the King seated on a throne and the backdrop being a three spire decorative piece fashioned form concrete.

King Rama III was the son of King Rama II and was born in Bangkok in 1788 and died in 1851. His reign was during a time period of radical change, regional conflict with modern day Laos and Cambodia and a growing pressure from Western influences…British and American, revolving mostly around trade issues.

King Rama III was well known for his Buddhist Faith. He was known to feed the poor on a daily basis and during his reign many temples were built or repaired. Or renovated including the highest stupa at Wat Arun, the Temple of the Golden Mount at Wat Sraket , and the temple that his statue sits in front of, the Wat Ratchanadda and of course Wat Pho, th4e home of the Reclining Buddha.

If you are visiting the Wat Ratchanadda or the Loha Prasat you could spend a few minutes here and visit this statue and walk the pathways of the little park that will lead you to the Wat, its really a pretty setting.

Access is free and there are no restrictions on when you can visit here.

The Free Tourist Tram
3 more images

What a find this was, a FREE sightseeing tourist Tram around Rattanakosin Island which is where all the major sights are.

The Tram seemed to run about half hourly, I actually caught it twice, sitting on a different side each time for different views and to get photos.
It departs from Sanam Luang Park which is just a short walk from the Grand Palace. There is a driver and a Hostess who gives the commentary in Thai, but all non Thai speaking tourists are given an informative brochure on what you are seeing.
Stop 1.. is the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, Sanam Luang, City Shrine & Silapakorn Fine Arts Department.
2.. Phra Nakhon National Museum, National Theatre, World War 1 Veteran Monument & National Museum.
3.. Maliwan Palace, Phra Arthit House, Phra Sumen Fort, Kurusapa Publishing & Wat Sungweetwittayaram.
4.. Wat Chanasongkram, Wat Bovornniwetviharn, Khao San Road & Chakrapong Mosque.
5.. Chao Pho Seure Shrine, Wat Mahannaparam & Samprang.
6.. Wat Suthattepwararam, Braham Monastery, Giant Swing & Bangkok City Hall.
7 .. Democracy Monument, 14th Oct. Memorial & Phanpipopleela Bridge.
8.. Ministery of Justice & Defence, Saranrom Garden, Reserve Force, Wat Phrachetuphon Wimonmungklaram & Drum Tower.
9..Pak Klong Talad market, Charoenrad 31 bridge, Rajini School & Green world fountain.
10... Tha Tien, Warehouse Pier & Thai Wang road.
11..Rajchaworadhit & Rachakitvinitchai Pavillion, Tha Chang Wang Luang & Shop houses.
12..Tha Phra Palace, Wat Mahathat, Amulet Market, Tha Prachan, Royal Monument of Prince Mahasurasinghanart & Thammasat University.

The Brochure gives information on all the sights mentioned in English.
Great if you have little time in Bangkok, or like me, too hot for walking, so got to see all the sights.
