There are many floating markets in and around Bangkok. Damnoen Saduak is the most popular, located about 1 hour outside of Bangkok. If you want to go to this one, there are a couple aof ways to do it. You can do the tour and you'll reach the market about 8-9 am, along with hundreds of other tourists during the bisiest time. You can also go out the night before, stay overnight in a hotel overlooking the klongs where the market takes place and be up early when all the vendors are starting up, at about 6-7am, and then be out of there by 9am when it gets really busy. That is the best way.
There are also several other floating markets along the river. A couple of these are just as good as the Damnoen Saduak market and a lot less people, not to mention more relaxed, and a lot cheaper to rent a boat. Like in Singapore, don't forget the FOOD. Probably the single biggest reason for me to go to the floating markets, all if the great little snacks, fruit, and great bowls of noodle soups, so go hungry!
Have FUN!

Try the Taling Chan market

This time I stayed 2 days in Bangkok just to visit floating market, a place that I have seen in the magazines and I wanted so much to see it with my own eyes. But I regret it, it is not at all the market it used to be many years ago, the old glory has gone and it is more like another show to tourists , to sell food and souvenirs. The ticket to go with a boat to the market cost almost 30euros, too expensive and a waste of time, pity.

The floating market out of town was not an expensive tour but was so jam packed with tourists! The stalls mostly same the same rubbish you find everywhere else and there were so many tourists we had 30 minuites in grid lock! You have to work a lot harder than this to get off the beaten track in Thailand!

I had a hope that the Floating Market would be cool, but it was hot as hell and made for tourists. I thought there would be locals, but everyone was tourists. You can buy everything in Bankok and save the money you paid to get here.
Maybe other floating markets are OK,this wasn't. I rest my case.
