Airlines: Boutique airline with all the frills
  • Tip Rating:
  • We have had quite few flights with Bangkok Airways - in and out of Thailand. This little airline is so efficient - we have had many flights which have left early, as everyone is present! The airports have excellent passenger lounges for all passengers, including free refreshments. Some airports have also had free refreshments in the departure lounges. There is a free internet service, and a loyalty programme.

We have always bought Asia Airpasses, wherein we have had multiple flights, and the costs are extremely cheap.

The whole experience with this airline is excellent.

Tuk-tuks: You must take a tuk tuk ride

tuk tuk is something you will see a lot of in Thailand and bangkok. Tiny highspeed looking golf carts with three wheels. They are fun and you should do it atleast once while in Thailand. Use them to take you short distances (from train station/ pier to somewhere).

Make sure you haggle and agree on a price first. Prices in bangkok will be higher than in other Thai cities, such as Chiang Mai. Prices should start around 40 baht to 120- at most. But it depends on time and route.

Warnings-they race around the city, which can be a little scary. I have heard kids love this. Also, if you are stuck in traffic it can be miserable, Since you are seated low on a tuk tuk and right at various car exhaust pipes.

Also-if you need a toy for a child back home, who loves cars. You can get a mini tuk tuk at the international airport. It;s a big hit.

    City Buses: Buses
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cheap and convenient, if a little crowded. I was hardly paying attention to where we were going as I was fascinated by the quick and skilful ticket and change technique of the bus conductress! She had this little metal tube of coins and tickets and, while keeping her feet without holding on (no mean task, I can assure you The driver clearly felt he wasn't doing his job if he left every passenger standing up!) she delivered change, tore and marked tickets, tided away the notes and sorted out her little box with very neat and deft movements. It was like poetry in motion.....

The bus? oh yes. Clean, airconditioned, but very full.

Metered Taxis: Taxi from the airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • After you collect your bags and clear customs at the Don Muang airport, you now need to find the best way to get to your hotel. If you have a friend or a hotel taxi picking you up, then this tip maynot be so helpful. They would be waiting for you at the visitors area and will take care of you. If not, read on…

If you need to take a taxi, you might want to avoid the Deluxe Taxi counters. These places will charge THB 400 for the service when you can get a regular taxi outside for about half the price. Keep walking through the crowd of people and take a right until you get out of the airport building, then look out for the taxi stand.

Just tell the girl at the counter which hotel you are staying at. She will write something on a piece of paper and hand it to a taxi driver. He will load your bags into his taxi. Tell him your destination, make sure the cab meter reads THB 35 at the beginning of your journey. Please tell the driver to take the "Toll Way" which is faster and will cost THB 70 extra. At the end of the trip, he will add on the THB 50 airport surcharge.

There you go, hope you find this useful.

After my next trip, I will upload a pic of the taxi stand. I forgot to take a pic during my last visit.

    Metered Taxis: Taxi cabs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Luxury travel! Most convenient. As you step out of the air conditioned hotel, your glasses mist up with the heat and humidity, you are guided into the taxi car and immediately vision is restored... a miracle!

Pollution is reduced, you can listen to the radio in relative quiet, try to learn Thai or at least figure out what they are saying, drivers sometimes speak English and are hilarious in their comments and phrases! Mind you, they have hysterics when I try to speak anything at all..... door to door travel, comfortable in traffic jams, however,
DO AGREE THE PRICE FIRST and, THEY DON'T ALWAYS KNOW WHERE ANYTHING IS!!! I have had the experience, that apart from London UK licensed cabs and New York, most taxi drivers rarely know where you want to go to. Our drivers often stopped and made phone calls to determine the location of the hotel.....

    Metered Taxis: Taxi-Meter
  • Tip Rating:
  • Taxis can be found everywhere. But be sure to take those with Taxi-Meter sign on top.

    The starting fare is 35THB.

If the taxi driver dont turn on the meter you may alight and hop on to another one.

There is a airport surcharge of 50THB when u depart from the airport.

There are 2 tolls 40THB and 20 THB.

Cab fare to town will cost 150 THB to 200 THB. It all depends on the traffic conditions.

River and Canal Boats: Best theme park ride in town
  • Tip Rating:
  • The canal buses that run along Klong Sen Seb are an impressively quick way of getting from one side of town to the other.

For tourists they usefully run from near the Democracy monument a 10-minute walk from Khasaon Road to the main shopping area around Thanon Rama. The stop at Tha Saphan Hua Chang is usefully close to the skytrain stop at Ratchathevi and the Jim Thompson house.

These little boats come by every few minutes - just jump on and find a seat in the serried rows. Several men in bicycle type helmets dance along the side of the boat to collect fares.

Don't think this will be scenic canal trip however - the boats set off at a furious pace as the plastic sheeting on both sides is lifted to avoid the worst of the splashes.

At one point (beware if you are tall and standing up) the whole roof is lowered without warning to get under and especially low-slung bridge - duck !

You don't want to get stuck in traffic on a tuc-tuc or in a taxi. Spend your poor money on a train ticket and get to where you want...almost. There are only two lines unfortunately and when I was there the subway wasn't in use. I've heard it is now. Never the less, using the Skytrain is one fast way to get around and you also get to see a lot from above.

Favourite stations? Siam Square for being in the middle of everything and Taksin station because it's a good place to hop on boats on Chao Phra river

SRT Trains: Overnight trains from Southern Thailand
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are many overnight trains from Southern Thailand originating from Hatyai, Golok, Surathani or Pattani to Bangkok daily. There is also an international train orginating from Butterworth, Penang State in Malaysia to Bangkok which takes about almost a day.

The seats are converted into double decker beds. Breakfasts, lunches and dinners can be ordered and served. There is also a dining coach to have your meals.

Quite a pleasant journey except that you will be well shaken by the tracks by the time you reach Bangkok. Need early booking during peak seasons, weekends and holidays.
