If you have a spare day in Bangkok try jumping on a public red bus and go on a very cheap city tour!
The buses cost a flat rate of 7 Baht per trip (as of Dec 2007). This allows you to travel as far as you want. You can get off anywhere. It's a great cheap way to see the city!

For most budget travelers, the backpacker district is near KaoSan Road. After exiting the airport's arrival hall, there are signs for buses to the city. Most backpackers will then pay the 150 Baht for the VIP bus to KaoSan Road (45min ~ 1hr).
However, for those who want to save even a bit more money, there is a cheap city public bus. This can be done by taking Bus #556 between terminal/KaoSan and airport (18 baht for 1hr). The public bus terminal at the airport can be accessed by free shuttle from the arrivals hall.

A cheap way to get around Bangkok is by local bus.The ordinary red or blue buses are o.k for short distance rides. However ,they can get extreamly crowded and hot when you are stuck in a traffic jam during peak hour.
Air-con buses are more comfortable they cost a little more (blue buses) depending on the destination. There are also Micro buses which charge a fix fare but you get a seat. As for the small private" Green" buses get on them at your own risk.
