New Suvarnabhumi Airport: Taking taxi from airport to city
  • Tip Rating:
  • Thank goodness for Suvarnabhumi Airport. Bangkok was in dire need of a new airport. Even though it opened late last year (after years of delays), but it still is a work in progress.

Once you come out of customs-you will see lots of tour agencies trying to hook you up with taxis, tours and accomodation. If you need a place to stay this place may be helpful. Don't book a taxi with them, unless you have 4 or 5 people plus lots of bags and need a mini cab.
Just follow the signs for public taxi (these are the only metered cabs at airport) and get in the line. Just go downstairs from the arrival hall the taxi lines. The taxi lines move much faster than at the old airport, Don Muang. There is a 50baht surcharge from the airport. To the city, we paid around 300 or so baht. During busy times or if you want a faster ride into the city. Take the toll roads (recommended). You pay the driver 40baht for this toll and 20 or so for another. It's not that much money and you get into Bangkok fast. There is a bus that can take you there, but unfortuantely i have never taken it -so i don't have any info.

When you go through the line. The taxi operator writes your taxi driver's no. on a receipt and gives it to you. If you have any problems or complaints you call the telephone no. on the receipt.

Transport arrangements to and from the new airport are pretty similar to the old one - but the bad news is that the airport is further out from the city and congestion seems much worse - avoid the rush hour if you can.

Taxi is the best way to and from the airport (at least until they finish building the train line in a couple of years time). Expect to pay about 300 baht from the airport to Sukhumvit - which should include the 50 baht surcharge and the tollway fee (the passenger pays these on top of whatever is on the meter). The taxi stand is on the level below arrivals - signage is not very good at present, but should improve over time.

There's also a pre-paid limo service if you have more cash and are nervous about dealing with a taxi driver - but you'll be paying quite a lot more for a very similar ride.

If your budget is tighter than that, there are also airport buses - but you won't make much saving if there are two or more of you travelling together. Single travellers heading to Khao San will make a fair saving, though - but don't expect it to be quick.

    Airport boarding lounges

The new Bangkok airport opened early in 2007 – and promptly ran into major problems when major construction faults led to calls for the old airport to be re-opened while repairs were made. We passed through the new terminal in late May and everything appeared to be functioning properly by then. The terminal is absolutely huge, though as we saw it at night, gaining a clear impression was difficult. The construction of boarding lounge areas appears similar to other new airports, such as Hong Kong, with extensive use of “plastic canvas” roofing. There are vast long concourses connecting different areas, fortunately equipped with moving walkways, and shops grouped at what I would call “nodes”.

Unsurprisingly, it was largely empty when we arrived late at night, local time! We found our way from our arrival lounge through the corridors with fairly few problems, then entered the boarding lounge (go out at the top level, then downstairs to the lounge – see photo). What soon became apparent was that no catering options existed in the boarding lounge area – to obtain some drinks, it was necessary to return to the shopping node.

So, getting to the point, if you are travelling from Bangkok Airport and are looking for catering, I would suggest you shop for nutrition prior to entering the boarding lounge area. Maybe later something will be provided in these areas as the terminal ‘beds in’.

Suvarnabhumi is the brand new airport of Bangkok. The previous one is now being used by the Thai army only. I landed at Suvarnabhumi last January and I was really impressed by the new airport! How can I describe it? Huge, modern, new, clean, .... A real hub!! The immigration area works very well. Although there are always a lot of overseas airplanes landing at the same time, the lines are never crowded and in a few minutes you get a stamp on your passport with "Suvarnabhumi - Thailand Admitted" written on! The luggage area is also very big. Belts are long enough so that passengers can look at them withouth problems. When luggage are about to be sent on a belt, you are told not about flight number (of course) but also if the bags on the belt are the "first ones to be delivered" or the "last ones", so you know when you can start getting worried if you haven't collect your bags yet!!!
Tip: if you fly from BKK to an International destination with Thai, be prepared to go to the airport in advance. Thai Airways has just few counters working for all international departure and the line is really really long if there are some overseas flights leaving I had to fly to Yangon and I was about to miss my flight! Then it will take almost half an hour to reach your gate. So be there early if you want to have a look to Suvarnabhumi King Power Duty Free...

There are about 6 types of airport limousine service from suvarnabhumi to bangkok ranging from mercedes benzes to BMW's. The Limousine fare is at set rates between 600-1500 baht, depending on the type of limousine. I had a mercedes benz E class car as limousine service of which a friend of mine paid for FREE hehehe. (i wouldn't spend 1000 baht for just a limousine ride! i'd rather spend it on shopping!)

Limousine Counter is at Level 2, Baggage Claim Hall and Arrival Hall of Suvarnabhumi Airport.

New Suvarnabhumi Airport: B700 Departure Tax!
The **new** departure tax is B700, hoewever, it's now build into your tickets and NOT paid individually in cash before departure (as was the old system)...

    One notable exception:

Non-Revenue passengers.. You must pay the tax either thru your airline's system (you just get billed) or IN CASH.. This is most common when you are a "guest" on another airline (who cannot bill you for your travel and associated taxes)... so, if you're a non-revenue passenger, I'd keep B700 in hand (cash) just in case you need to pay the fee before departure!

New Suvarnabhumi Airport: Suvarnabhumi Airport to Don Muang
From Suvarnabhumi Airport the only way to get to the old airport at Don Muang (distance about 30 kilometres) is by road.

BUS: The cheapest way to do it is by bus. First you take the free bus-shuttle from the Suvarnabhumi passenger terminal to the Bus Station (also called Travel Center) which is within the airport compound but too far to walk. The shuttle goes every 5 minutes and takes about 5 minutes to get to the Bus Station.
Once you are at the Bus Station look for bus number 554 (colour orange). It is air-conditioned, comfortable and goes directly to Don Muang airport. It’s quite a fast service because it bypasses central Bangkok and goes along the expressway. The fare is about Bt35 (US$1) and buses go about every 30 minutes. Allow from 45 to 90 minutes depending on the time of day. Rush hour in Bangkok (the Big Mango) is: mornings 7am -9.30am and evenings 5pm to 8pm. For more details about which buses go where from Suvarnabhumi, click : www.bangkokairportonline.com/node/14

TAXI: If for some reason the buses aren't running or you are short of time, you can take a taxi. The taxis have metres (make sure they turn the metre on when you start off !!! it should read Bt35). The fare to Don Muang will be about Bt250 (US$7) plus highway toll charges of about Bt100 payable as you go.

LIMOUSINE: If you are a high-roller you could go to Don Muang by limousine service. If you want to pay through the nose you can pick one of these up immediately after going through customs. Alternatively, pick and choose when you get outside the terminal. Limousines are not metred, you have to negotiate the fare yourself. Most of them want Bt800 (US$23) to go to Don Muang.
    Bon Voyage

New Suvarnabhumi Airport: Transportation between airports
If you have to change airports in Bangkok from the new to the old or vice versa
We found at Don Maung you can take an air conditioned minibus for 50 baht a person
plus 50 baht for each piece of large luggage, or for even cheaper there are 2 local buses
that run between airports for 34 baht a person. But the buses only run every 50 minutes

New Suvarnabhumi Airport: Bad Bus Service to Public Terminal
Never travel with the Airport Shuttle Bus to the Airport Public Bus Terminal. This is because the whole journey takes 20 minutes, especially when you need to travel to Morchit, 2 hours of bus journey, for bus departures to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. If you can afford the money, fly with AirAsia or One-Two-GO Airlines.

Travelling in Bangkok by bus is a time challenge, not a leisure now.
