If you have to change airports in Bangkok from the new to the old or vice versa
We found at Don Maung you can take an air conditioned minibus for 50 baht a person
plus 50 baht for each piece of large luggage, or for even cheaper there are 2 local buses
that run between airports for 34 baht a person. But the buses only run every 50 minutes
A Taxi is the easiest wayto get from the airport to downtown
Its about 700 baht to the centre. You will be bombarded with people asking if you want a limo or taxi as you walk out of the airport. Ignore them all and head for the taxi rank. There will be someone there who will take your fare before you board.
It also helps having the name and address of the hotel written down so they can understand you easier.
It seems the rules about the taxi pickup have changed at the new airport. Instead of going to the transportation center by free shuttle bus to get a taxi, They have allowed taxs to pick up passengers outside the arrivals area.
Never travel with the Airport Shuttle Bus to the Airport Public Bus Terminal. This is because the whole journey takes 20 minutes, especially when you need to travel to Morchit, 2 hours of bus journey, for bus departures to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. If you can afford the money, fly with AirAsia or One-Two-GO Airlines.
Travelling in Bangkok by bus is a time challenge, not a leisure now.
I had read plenty of bad things about the new airport before I arrived - but by the time I arrived (1 December 2006), many of the problems seemed to have been ironed out. However there were a few small signs of unfinished building work, the arrivals hall after customs was way too small (and hence quite crowded) - and there were no signs to the taxi stand. In general, though, my passage through the airport was smooth enough, although I did have to wait a bit for my bag. The taxi stand turned out to be one floor down - and alas it was rush hour by then - and traffic around the new airport seems to be much worse than at Don Muang. Still - at least they have started to build the airport rail link.
On coming back, my impression of the airport was much more favourable - there's plenty of space in the check-in hall. There are a reasonable number of shops and places to eat before you go through immigration on your way out - and lots of shops and cafes afterwards. Prices generally seemed more reasonable than at Don Muang, too. One negative point was that there aren't enough places to sit down outside of the cafes, though.
Despite being new - the airport seems to be running close to capacity already, and it's not at all obvious that there is much scope for future expansion. There is already a lot of talk about moving the budget airlines back to Don Muang to ease the pressure on the new airport.
This is 1st time we landed in new airport and we panicked as the airport are so huge...need to run and ask around before we get the imigration clearance and get our luggage ,as we know thats bangkok is the asia hub for airline ,you can see so many airline counter which i never knew .domestic and international under one roof
The new Suvarnabhumi Airport looks spanking new and sleek from the outside. But on the inside, it's quite obvious that they have forced through its opening. When I was there, the toilets were dirty and many were still closed for renovation. The walls and beams were not yet ready (still in the original concrete without panelling or painting). Signage was haphazard and immigration clearance was slow with very long queues. Doesn't seem to have much budget food available - only the expensive ones. The taxi stand is basically a table by the side of the road. But thankfully, they are able to usher you into the correct taxi that will not overcharge. The airport is quite far from the city and will probably cost around 400baht to get into town. Rail service is not available yet.
Better airport than the former BAA. It is quite big and clean. This pic is taken by my uncle who recently sent me. I went there in 2005 when this airport was not ready.
The new Bangkok Airport has recently been completed and is a nice airport to navigate around (as far as airports go).
