River and Canal Boats: Long Tail Boat
  • Tip Rating:
  • I love watching these longtail boats screaming up and down the Chao Phraya River. I think the water spray that the propellers kick up is kind of cool! They are very noisy though. The drivers must be mostly deaf!!

River and Canal Boats: River travel in style ...
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is one of the hotel boats on the Chao Praya River. You can see the contrast between the old and the new on the riverbank.

    River and Canal Boats: Cruise
  • Tip Rating:
  • Taxis that are even more unusual, though equally convenient, are the river taxis that ply the Chao Phraya river. Fares are extremely cheap. You can get just about anywhere for 10 Baht or less.

The Chao Phraya Express boat is a quick and cool way to see and get across Bkk quickly, and the view from the boat is interesting too. As the express boat makes its way south from Nonthaburi, it zig zags from the Thonburi side of the river to the Bkk side of the river down to the south side of the city and back again. It is cheap transportation at around 7 baht a person. They pass by every 20 minutes during the day. It is a good way to access the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun and Khao San Road which are not far from the river.

    River and Canal Boats: Longtails
  • Tip Rating:
  • Make a point of taking a ride up the river on a 'Longtail.' These long, slender boats race up and down the river, powered by a V8 engine mounted on a pivot.... a wonderful experience.

  • If you are staying on the river, this is the way to get to the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. Incredibly cheap, I think we paid 8 baht to get from north of the Grand Palace to the Shangri-La Hotel.

River and Canal Boats: River Taxi & Ferries:
  • Tip Rating:
  • River Taxi & Ferries: This type of transportation plies along the Chao Phraya River. The ride from Tha Tian to Wat Arun is 2 baht while the speed ferry from Tha Tian to Taksin Bridge or Tha Sathon Pier where you can get a connection on the BTS Sky Train is 8 baht. I was advised to take care of my wallet & belongings while on these taxis.

River and Canal Boats: Chao Phraya River Express boat
  • Tip Rating:
  • Try a trip on the river on the cheap Chao Phraya River Express boat. You'll get some excellent views of the city, and it can be much faster than travelling by road. It's stops usefully close to a Skytrain station, at Sathorn pier - useful for getting to or from the Patpong / Siam Square / Sukhumvit areas of the city. River and Canal Boats: LONG TAIL BOATS
  • Tip Rating:
  • An easy way to get around is to use the service of these boats. The river is not very deep that's the reason of such long tails where the engine is attached. Each hotel on the river bank has their owns. The one on the picture are Shangri-La hotel's boats

River and Canal Boats: Another sort of water taxi,...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Another sort of water taxi, this one was just to cross the river over to Wat Arun. It should cost 2Baht. They try to charge foreigners more. This really annoyed me and my friends and it is not about the money, of course. If they want to charge more they should do it openly and honestly, with a sign informing you of it. Like with entrance fees for temples etc. instead of hoping to 'catch you out'. They didn't catch us out... which they then dealt with by smiling/laughing... the Thai way of dealing with an uncomfortable situation.
