Lumphini Metro Station by DarkRay Beside the popular BTS SkyTrain system that travels above ground on its own tracks, the Bangkok Metro that travels along its own purpose built and dedicated tunnels now offer the commuters in Bangkok another hassle free option to get around the city without getting yourself stuck in one Bangok's infamous traffic jams. This in combination with the BTS SkyTrain and Chao Phraya Express Boat makes getting around to some of the most popular destinations a much easier task than before. The connection points between Bangkok Metro and BTS SkyTrain can be found at: 1. Chatuchak Park Metro Station - Mo Chit BTS Station 2. Sukhumvit Metro Station - Asok BTS Station 3. Silom Metro Station - Sala Daeng BTS Station Do note that despite the connection points, the ticketing and fares for both systems are separate and distinct, as with that of the Chao Phraya Express Boat as well. More information about the full route map can be found here. Points of interests along the Metro include: - Hua Lamphong: Chinatown, Bangkok Railway Station - Lumphini: Lumphini Boxing Stadium, Suan Lum Night Market - Queen Sirikit National Centre: Queen Sirikit Convention Centre - Kamphaeng: Chatuchak Weekend Market Leave a Comment

Bangkok’s MRTA Subway is a cheap and fast means of getting around the city. It is particularly useful in a city such as Bangkok, where roads in the city centre are frequently gridlocked with traffic. At the time of my visit in September 2007, the subway consisted of 18 stops between Hua Lamphong at one end of the line and Bang Sue at the other end. Extensions to the line are planned in coming years, with plans to extend into Chinatown. I was staying in Chinatown and the nearest station to my hotel on Yaowarat Road was Hua Lamphong, a 15 minute walk away. Most of my journeys on the subway were between Hua Lamphong, Silom and Sukhumvit. The fares for these routes were as follows: Hua Lamphong – Silom = 17 Bahts (approx. 5 minutes journey) Hua Lamphong – Sukhumvit = 26 Bahts (approx. 10 minutes journey) Silom – Sukhumvit = 22 Bahts (approx. 5 minutes journey) The subway connects with the BTS Skytrain at 3 stations: Silom (connected to Sala Daeng Skytrain station) Sukhumvit (connected to Asoke Skytrain station) Chatuchak Park (connected to Mo Chit Skytrain station) If you are using the public transport system extensively, you can buy day or week passes. I opted instead to pay for each individual journey. Each station has numerous ticket machines which accept both coins and notes. Use the touch screen interface to select from Thai and English instructions, then press your desired destination. You will receive a small plastic coin sized token. Swipe the token on the turnstile to get on to the platform and then, at the end of your journey, insert the token into the turnstile slot to exit the platform. Trains run from around 6am until midnight and are often very busy. I frequently found that there was standing room only. Thankfully, the trains are air conditioned. Stops are announced first in Thai and then in English. You can find cafes, shops, food and drink stalls and information desks at each subway station. Leave a Comment

A chip for train ride - not for jackpot! by sailor_p Baby, this is no chip for hitting jackpot! Believe me or not, this token is used for taking a train ride on the Mass Rapid Transit or MRT for short. Bangkok is well-served by public transport, especially the BTS. However, the BTS could not reach all areas and at times, certain locations are served by the MRT, which runs in the underground. To travel from Siam Square to Suan Lum Night Market, I have to take the BTS from the Siam BTS station to Sala Daeng BTS station. Exiting from Sala Daeng BTS station, take a short walk through the well-guided walkway to the Lumphini MRT station in the underground. The MRT is fast and comfortable and you hit your destination in no time! Try it today! Leave a Comment

Lumpini MRTA station by daryll The easiest way to travel around Bangkok's congested streets is to take either the Skytrain or the MRTA Subway. Both offer a reliable service around central Bangkok and used together, provide a fast, cheap way to see many places of interest around the city. The Skytrain operates daily from 6am to midnight while the MRTA operates daily from 5am to midnight. Leave a Comment

Asoke Station by suraphona Subway The Bangkok Metropolitan Transportation Authority is constructing subway tunnels, ideally to be extended throughout the city. The first section should be available in 2002 but now Jan 2003 still not open and the completed lines will be available in 2008, if not push back from budget cut. The fareprice is to be decided. Subway Entrance @ Sukhumvit by jrs1234 The new Bangkok subway is now open! After an official ceremony, it was opened to the public at just after 7pm on July 3rd, 2004. The subway is just a single line to start with, running from Hua Lamphong (close to Chinatown) to Bangsue (near Chatuchak) via Ratchadaphisek road, but there are plans for the addition of additional lines in the future. It's operated by the BMCL (Bangkok Metro Public Company Ltd) and regulated by the MRTA (Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority). There is a reasonable routemap on the official MRTA site, or the BMCL has a downloadable PDF map here. Fares on the subway currently range from 10 to 15 baht for adult fares depending on distance. Opening times are 6am to midnight daily, similar to those of the Skytrain. Here's a picture of one of the Sukhumvit station entrances - taken in February 2004, when they still had some work to do on it. For lots of (unofficial) information about the subway, take a look at www.bangkoksubway.com. There is a nice report on the opening of the subway at BBC News Online. Leave a Comment

Bangkok's BTS and Metro route map by Vita500 Bangkok's first subway (metro) line was opened to the public in July 2004 and consists of 18 stations along 21 kilometers of track. An expansion of the existing line and two other lines are currently under contruction. There are three interchange possibilities to the BTS, though separate tickets need to be bought for using the BTS and Metro. Ticket fares vary from 15 Baht to 39 Baht, depending on the distance that you travel. Same as with the BTS, there are several kinds of tickets/stored value cards available but for regular visitors to Bangkok, Single Journey Tokens (you get a coin-like token that you hold upon a sensor while entering the station and put it into a slot when exiting) are still the best option unless you plan on using the Metro extensively during your stay. As the network is still rather short, we didn't use the Metro but once during our stay. However, the service was efficient, the trains were kept extremely clean but unfortuntely, identical to the BTS, freezingly cold. Leave a Comment
