Tuk-tuks: Tuk Tuk once but don't make it a habit

Tuk Tuks are like taxis but if they did not look so cute and zippy, I don't think many tourist would use them. They usually overcharge tourists so if you are not addicted to having smog in your face, feeling the humidity and having to haggle until you are blue - stick to the proper, air conditioned taxis.

Everyone should ride in a tuk tuk once for the experience but for comfort the regular taxis are much better and for affordability use the well organized city buses.

    Tuk-tuks: Try the Tuk Tuks!!!
Tuk Tuks are the cheapest and easiest way to travel around the various neighborhoods of Bangkok. A Tuk Tuk is a 3-wheeled motorcycle with a roof and a bench in the rear large enough for 2-3 people. They are cheap and very fast!

From the Grand Palace, I caught a Tuk Tuk to the Golden Mount, the suitmakers at Chao Praya, and to Wat Saket. The driver dropped me off right in front of each location, gave me a few tips on what to see or buy, and waited until I was finished. The whole trip took about 2 hours and I only paid 40 Baht (US$1.00)! As with motrocycle taxis, fares must be negotiated with the driver prior to departing on your journey. Don't pay until you arrive at your destination.

Tuk Tuks are located everywhere in the city where there are tourists, and the locals often use them as well.

    Tuk-tuks: Tuk-Tuk
    Tuk-Tuk

Venturing out after taking in to consideration all the advice about transport in Bangkok. With out directions to the IT centre in hand we approached the first Tuk-Tuk waiting outside the hotel. We stated where we wanted to go and negotiated a price, as per the advice. Once we were sat ready to go our driver asked again where we wanted to go and then halved the price if we went to the spectacle shop. We said no just to Pamthip Plaza. He then wanted to take us to the diamond shop. We said no! The craft shop? We got out and waved him away, as per the advice. The second driver took over asking where we were going and negotiated the price and of we went. This was our first experience of Tuk-Tuk and the Bangkok traffic. All the warnings we had been given, that we had ignored were true. A Tuk-Tuk ride in Bangkok is attempted suicide, if not from some terrible pile-up as Bikes, Cars, Tuk-Tuk, Lorries and Coaches all jockey for the best racing line around corners and road position (or should that be possession). If you survive that there is carbon monoxide inhalation. You may as well attach a hose pipe to the exhaust; if that is you can find one. The other problem is that you can almost guarantee that the driver has no idea where you want to go, he will drive around looking. It must cost them more that you actually give them. So with life threatening levels of noxious gases, death deifying banger racing and travelling from the middle of nowhere, to the middle of nowhere. Then go to the city, big city, Bangkok and take a Tuk-Tuk ride

Tuk-tuks are 3 wheeled vehicles unique to Thailand. They serve as another mode of local transportation. But before getting on one, make sure you agree on a price first as these are not metered like regular taxis.

    Tuk-tuks: Kids would love it.
We thought taking tuk-tuk was unsafe initially, reading about how they could con you and stuff. Yes we were nearly tricked. But we stuck to our destination and asked the people at the hotel how much it would cost to take the tuk-tuk to our destination. We fixed the price before getting onboard and actually bargained with a smile. My kids enjoyed it soooo much and it was definitely much cheaper and faster than the BTS at certain times of the day.

    Tuk-tuks: Just be wary

We were fully aware of the tuktuk scams but we still managed to end up on a tuktuk tour. A random Thai man flagged a tuktuk down for us and showed us (and the tuktuk driver) places we should visit before we go to the Grand Palace (apparently it was closed for the morning and we believed him on this occasion because a reliable source told us it was a public holiday that day). So anyway, we were told it would cost us 40 baht. I was very suspicious yet somehow my boyfriend was convinced it would be ok and we ended up on this tuktuk.

Our first stop appeared to be a dodgy back alley carpark which worried me what I had got myself into, until I got out of the tuktuk and saw a building with an ornate roof and was told that this was the "Lucky Buddha Temple" which was only open to tourists one day a year (I'm pretty sure that was a lie but we got some nice photos and it didn't cost us anything so I didn't mind). Then we were taken to the Marble Temple. Then unfortunately our next 3 stops were at various gem/silk shops. Our tuktuk driver was very honest and told us if we spent 5 minutes looking around, we didn't have to buy anything, then he would get a petrol voucher. We appreciated his honesty and obliged, particularly as we hadn't paid him yet and he had already taken us to a couple of temples.

We parted ways with our tuktuk driver at the Grand Palace, so we got there in the end. It was a good experience to ride a tuktuk but just be wary and always negotiate a price before you get in.

    Tuk-tuks: Tuk Tuk
We were not excited to sit in Tuk Tuks as we have our Bajaj Rickshaws in India which are more comfortable and cheap than the Thai tuk tuks
