Tuk-tuks: TUK-TUK
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a must - if you dare and are not afraid getting almost asphyxiate! Try one of these funny transportation which are three-wheeled contraptions that are half motorcycle and half golf cart. They offer exciting and UNSAFE-AT-ANY-SPEED transportation. They are more expensive than taxis, and since there is no meter, you must bargain with the driver on price. One even stopped after a few meters and just throw me out - he wasn't in the mood to go the way I was!

  • Tuk-tuk: even though the polution is really bad in Bangkok, tuk-tuks are the best way to go around. Don't forget to negotiate the fare BEFORE you hop in though.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Took-Took (also called Sam-Lor) are the bright blue and yellow three wheeled taxis whose name comes from the noise their two cycle engines make. If the English fluency of taxi drivers is limited , that of took-took drivers is even less. They also like to race and to weave in and out of traffic, providing a hair-raising ride and exposing its occupants to the noxious fumes from Bangkok traffic. Fares begin at 30 Baht. Took-Tooks are fun for short trips, but choose a taxi for longer journeys.

  • TUK TUK: these are the 'land taxis'. Tuk tuk are small motor bikes with some sort of sofas in the back. You sit there, at the open air (and air pollution is at an incredible level) and the driver brings you everywhere. There are thousands of them, they run fast in the messy traffic, and if the drivers see a pale face walking, they stop offering you a city tour at a cheap price. The only problems that you're probably going to be stopped every 2 minutes by these guys.

  • Tip Rating:
  • When you visit Bangkok you should travel around in a TUK TUK. The formerly motorized saamlor is rapidly becoming a piece of history in Bangkok, although they can still always be found near tourist sites. They are best for short journeys as they are uncomfortable and, being open to the elements, you are more than likely to suffer from the fumes. Bargaining is essential and the fare must be sorted out before boarding. The driver may try and take you to shops, do not be persuaded, you could be there for a long time. The shops pay the TUK TUK drivers for every customer they bring. I've heard of travellers being taken to a carpet shop and been shown loads of carpets and they found it very hard to leave.

  • Try the tuk-tuk (motorized rickshaw) at least once. They overcharge, I know, but they're fun. And they're fast, thanks to tuk-tuk drivers who drive like maniacs.
