Satukarn Square -- bad food at inflated prices!
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the centre of Hua Hin, on the town hall/police station crossroads, there is a large open-air restaurant & shop complex called Satukarn Square. If you walk past, you will be hassled by touts telling you of special offers or food from home, but don't be fooled! Any restaurant that needs a tout should be approached with care, & (for example) their idea of a 'Happy Hour' is 1 small bottle of beer with a meal & alcohol!
Yes, the menu is mostly western & so might attract a homesick tourist, but the quality of the food & cooking is not good, meaning chewy meat & tasteless vegetables. What's more, the prices are MUCH higher than at other HH restaurants, even those serving Western food.

If you must use one of the Satukarn restaurants, choose your meal carefully -- try to avoid western food & maybe try a Thai dish. However, this is a tourist place & so if you like spicy food, you might be disappointed.
Similarly, don't feel obliged to tip -- many Thais do not!

Almost opposite Satukarn Square is the main town temple. On the other side of this temple are many restaurants, also aimed at tourists but offering better quality & nicer prices. Alternatively, try going further north along Petchkasem Road, a couple of blocks, & then head off to the left. Here you'll find many nice street restaurants selling nice Thai food for a lot less money.

    Indian tailors
  • Tip Rating:
  • I have never seen so many tailor shops in my life. The guys hang around outside then pounce as soon as you get close enough. Their trick is to shake your hand while passing their business card at the same time but not letting go of your hand all the time trying to sell their wares.
This was the only down fall they just got on my nerves after a while.

Give them a wide berth or just be polite unless you want a suit of course!!!!
By the end of our stay my patience was wearing very thin and i was finding it hard to stay polite especially when some of them mumble under their breath ofter you walk on. Of course you imagine they are calling you exactly what you are thinking of them!!!!!

    Steak House
  • Tip Rating:
  • Actually most of restaurants in Hua Hin town are very good except this steak house at Damnoen Kasem Road opposite from City Beach Hotel, quite expensive and badly prepared. They ads with 10% coupon in various tourist maps and newspaper.

Tailors and other 'tourist' oriented shops
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is a walking strip between the night market and the ocean that hooks around and back to the main drag thru town. If you are hoping to have some clothing made for you in Thailand, don't do it here. This is were the upscale tourists go so prices will be high. You can have clothing of equal or better quality made in Bangkok around Sukhumvit Road at a better price. However, if you have faith in your bargaining skills, be RUTHLESS and you might find a good deal here.

It is a pleasant area for walking and window shopping, or at least it was in the 90s.

Get your tailoring done in bangkok, or if you speak the language, the absolute best deals are in small towns that don't do business with foreigners. However they will often have no idea of foreign tastes or expectations. If you have an item they can copy, they will do a fine job for you.
