Unique Suggestions: Just DON'T GO THERE.
Fun Alternatives: Try the many other friendly bars along this road, (Betty Boop bar or One More bar )you won't be disappointed. There are other bars that have pool tables in ,if you like pool just a bit further along the road.
The Bridge over the River Kwai is the main reason for coming to Kanchanaburi but I'm afraid the area is spoilt with tourist trap souvenir shops selling T-shirts and CD's, a market selling clothes and loud music - hardly a fitting memorial to all those that died here building this bridge and the railway.
I wanted to go on the Death Railway and over the Bridge on the River Kwai. I knew you could do a Train ride over it, so I took this Tour. We were taken through the countryside to a Train Station where it departs from. There were some excellent views of the River Kwai, and the Resorts on the River, and the Train slowed for photos. To a lot of people's surprise, the Train stopped at a Station BEFORE THE RIVER KWAI BRIDGE and we all got off.
This was the disappointing part. There is a Train that goes over the Bridge, but it certainly isn't this one, so, if you do a tour, and want to go by Train over the Bridge, CHECK IT OUT 1st.
If you are thinking of visiting the Tiger Temple please read the web sites below first!
There is now mounting evidence that the place is not only unfit to look after the tigers but may be involved in the illegal tiger trade.
You may be supporting the consumption of tiger parts as "medicine"!
Unique Suggestions: Read up on the mistreatment of animals at this place ....
Fun Alternatives: Keep your money and give it to a PROPER animal welfare organisation.
I'd never been on an elephant before so I thought that this would be a good idea. However, this is not the way to do it. You get on the back of an elephant and then you do a small circuit with nothing to see. It's actually kind of boring. On top of that, the elephants are not treated that well. At least there was a baby elephant to look at and that was cool.
Fun Alternatives: If you are going to ride an elephant I would recommend heading up to Chiang Mai and going on a trek. You get to go through the jungle with more to see and it doesn't feel like the elephants are locked up in a small pen.
I do recommend you go see this, but be prepared for how commercial it is. They have elephants there that are chained by their back leg - didn't look too humane to us. There are people everywhere trying to sell you souvenirs - and they are pretty aggressive. There are some cool restaurants right on the river, so you might want to check them out. Heard the train tour at sunset is cool, but it takes hours and we just didn't have the time...
Fun Alternatives: maybe take the train ride instead?
Do not forget to bring an umbrella and eye shades! I never really actually thought that it would be that hot! And bring alot of water as you will have to walk and walk! I believe it's the nice way to be very careful in choosing your trips. And you should know that the train in going to the "Death Railway" is very noisey and the toilet is broke! If possible have a CR first before taking a ride to the train as it will stop in brief every 15 mintues and will be around 1 and 1/2 hour to go in the Nam Tok Station.
Unique Suggestions: Have a water with you always. Umbrella and something to cover your skin!
