Building the roof with palmleaves
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the newly built campement where we stayed when we visited Ko Chang for the first time in the 80s the toilet unit and the open air restaurant were not finished yet. During our stay they were still building.

It was very interesting to see how they constructed the roof with palmleaves, using the natural materials of the environment. During breaks the craftsmen were always playing cards. Adrie, the only one of us who could speak a bit Thai mostly join them.

Ban Bang Bao, life in the village at poles
  • Tip Rating:
  • Most of the life in the fishing village at poles Ban Bang Bao takes place at the water. When we visited the village we saw the pounding of a paste with fish in a huge wooden pot, we saw the washing of the dishes at the wooden pier and everywhere we saw that dried fish and octopus.

The second time we visited the village by boat and we went ashore to visit the coconut farm we passed the place where the fishermen took their bath. Marco joined them for a while and took a picture.

    NO nude bathing
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is illegal in Thailand to bathe nude. Thailand is far from Europe in both location and culture. For the most part Thais are conservative and bathing in the nude is EXTREMELY inappropriate. So inappropriate that it is illegal by law. Tourists have been ARRESTED in Thailand for nude bathing. Don't do it, unless you find it necessary to be embarrassed, to embarrass the people and culture around you, and to spend some time in a Thai jail.

Take your shoes/sandals off on certain floors
  • Tip Rating:
  • On Koh Chang it is important to look at the floor before entering a place, such as a restaurant. If the floor to the restaurant is straw or bamboo then you must take your shoes off before stepping on it. Also some other nicer indoor beachfront restaurants may ask you to take off your shoes. Just look for groups of shoes in front of a place or ask when in doubt. By no means is it necessary to ask every place if you can wear shoes, but just places specifically with straw or bamboo floors.

    Don't Get Upset
  • Tip Rating:
  • When a coconut falls on top of your head, don't get upset. See it as a gift from above, it tastes delicious! Find some locals (anyone) who have a knive for you to split it in two and enjoy!

For coconutmilk: scrape the inside of the coconut with the lid of beerbotle, and squeeze the juice out of the shredded coconut. It is delicious to cook some rice in this juice!
