English guy Barry and his wife Noi lived in the UK for 30 years and now live in Lopburi. A foreign food (if that is what you are looking for) gem in a small town. Very reasonable prices. Nice people.
I found the Lopburi Steak House (downtown Lopburi) to be a Thai version of what foreign food is like, and it ain't pretty. Stick with the real stuff at Barry and Noi's.
Any of the foreign food is good, so it the Thai stuff. But you can get good Thai food anywhere.
Scones used to be great. Excellent seafood pizza. great burgers, Anything on the menu. Ploy means 'gem' in Thai.
Traditional Thai food in a lovely outdoor (but underroof) setting - no A/C. Great tasting food is not hard to find in Thailand, but finding a restaurant that is pleasant to eat in takes a bit of looking around. Most restaurant owners don't give a rat's ass about atmosphere - as long at the King and Queen are on the wall and you have some plastic chairs to sit on and a rickety table to eat at and there is a loud TV for the staff to watch, what's the problem? Ploy has no TVs, lots of wood and plants, and it is reasonably priced. I loved going there.
Their nam tok, lab, som tam thai, tom yam, yam blah duk foo are all excellent. One thing missing from their menu is tom kaa, but that is ok because the rest of the food makes up for it. we walked around looking for something decent in this city. we looked in the tourist books for ideas of restaurants to eat and tried some of those out, but really didn't find anything worth mentioning. so we wound up at the local KFC and it tasted like heaven after having failed to find anything else here. Ambience? Pah... its a fairly straightforward cafe, does yer thai faves and has a wicked line in mass market ice cream products. The banana split was ace, just avoid the Hot Cashew Salad.

Rotees are crepe-like pancakes topped with condensed milk and sugar, and rolled up. Sometimes they come with egg in them, sometimes in tourist areas they will make them with banana or other fruit rolled up inside.
These are the rotee girls at the Sakaew traffice circle night market in Lopburi and they made the best ones. The girl in the centre is the boss and i thought she was about 18 years when she was actually the same age as me - late 20s at the time. Time has passed and i have forgotten her name, but i will be back in 2003 so i will definitely look to see if they are still around. Then they cost about 7 baht a piece, but if they have started making them with 'kai Banharn', they have probably gone up in price.
