Not Really the Family Destination They Describe

by gaolei Written Oct 20, 2005

    Pattaya Beach

Pattaya started as an R and R center for US troops during the Vietnam war. Today there are, maybe 1000 bars and clubs that cater mostly to men looking for women. Clearly this is not a family destination, unless you stay in the big hotels and only go to a few markets.

The beach water is dirty. The sewage plant has changed the color from brown to nearly clear over the past 4 years, but it is still not safe for bathing.

The surrounding Beach Road is a pickup area for street walkers during the day. So don't go there for sunny days on the beach.

Walking street at night is full of bars with women (in some cases men) for sale! If you think you can go through that without your kids catching on go there, otherwise stay away.

  • Pattaya Bar Druggings

by thaivet Written Aug 25, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Beware of druggings in Soi Pattayaland 2. The streets there are populated by drug dealers selling Ya-Ba and their girlfriends working in the Go-Go bars are in possession of this drug.

Currently, there is a struggle between rival drug gangs in this area fighting for control of Sales and distribution. Often, the Thai drug dealers are armed.

Your newly found 'friend' in this area may be in possession of a class 1 substance. You could be implicated by the Thai authority if you associate with these girls, or any Bar Owners in this area.

Extremely dangerous area that must be avoided at all costs.

Stay off the beach after 10 pm!

    by Travel2write Written May 10, 2005

In Pattaya there is beach road, which is a pick-up place for most undocumented sex workers and Ladyboys. You want to be very careful on the beach after 10 pm. Many freelance hookers which do not have health cards work the beach road. Also many ladyboys/men are looking to roll a drunken tourist walking back to there hotel.

    Pick Pockets

    by Travel2write Written May 10, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Petty crimes such as pick-pocketing are a known problem in and around the major tourist areas, such as Jomtien Beach and Pattaya Beach. To help curb this problem, a special Tourist Police division was established to aid foreign tourists (farangs) who have been scammed, robbed or pick-pocketed.

    Pirated Software and Movies

    by Travel2write Written May 10, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Pattaya, along with the rest of Thailand, is known for its abundance of pirated DVD Movies, Music CDs and Software. Such vendors can be found anywhere along main tourist areas, having their own booths or simply approaching customers in bars, beaches and restaurants. The quality of DVD movies can vary from perfect quality to simply a bootlegged version obtained from a handheld camcorder in a movie theater. Generally, a DVD movie will only be of good quality if it's DVD release date in the United States has already passed. Although this practice is illegal, local police do little to stop it, and only perform raids on shops and vendors for publicity.

Just be alert at all times!

    by Travel2write Written May 9, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The excess tourism business gave Pattaya many unique problems such as water pollution, petty crimes and prostitution. These were out of the central governments's ability to handle. Thus, in 1976, the Pattaya City Act passed the parliament, and Pattaya became a self-administrating municipality governed by a Council-manager government. However this administration system has some problems such as that the mayor may disagree with the city manager, so critics have suggested to abolish the system.

    Little Hustlers

These little kids try to sell you all kinds of different knock off crap. This kid in the picture was offering to shine my shoes. They'll offer to shine your shoes even if you're wearing flip flops. I ended up buying an inkpen from one of the kids so he'd leave me alone. That pen was a lot of fun. It has a battery in it, and when you click the end to make the tip come out it gives you a little shock. It made for a good time when I got drunk around a bunch of half naked girls. Needless to say I pissed a few people off.

Be careful of what you eat on the Beach

Exotic sea food on the beach

This is not exactly a warning. Just be careful of what you eat at the beach. Exotic seafood is available and you can try all of them with a bit of caution. Do ask for the price before you eat them otherwise you may end up paying double at least.

Be Prepared to get "wet" in April in Thailand

Me getting splashed in Pattaya during Thai New yrs

While in Pattaya (like this picture) or anywhere in Thailand, the new year's celebration is around mid-april. While in Thailand, there is a tradition where men sprinkle "a dash" of water on your for good luck and women dab a type of white powder on your face.

This is for good luck and is the custom of Thailand's New Year's celebration.

    However.

It has wound up turning into the world's largest squirt gun/water baloon fight. In this picture, I got 'drive by' splashed by this youngster celebrating Thai New Years.

What's annoying is that if you walk the boardwalk area, there will be a bar where a bunch of Aussie tourists are waiting there to hose anyone down who walks by the bar regardless of how formal your appearance is.

Tourists beware of this while in Thailand during the month of April.

The jetski's pass very fast and near the beach

The beach in Pattaya isn't very attractive, at some place it is only 3 m wide, but that is another story.

But over here the sea is very polluted by the many boats.

But it is also very dangerous to go swimming over here. As there are many jetski's for rent and sometimes these jetski's pass very, very fast at small distance of the beach.

So if you are swimming there is the danger of being hit by a passing jetski. And I believe that this is not such a nice experience.

There for I believe it is better to go to Jomtein Beach, which can easily be reached with a taxi.

Renting a boat ar a bike

by filipdebont Written Dec 7, 2003

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    accident . . . .

Be careful whenever you rent a bike, or a jetski or a boat.

As mostly these vehicles do not have insurance. And when you get involved in an accident, you will pay for all the damages regardless if you are right or wrong. It is always that way, as Thai Police will always take the side of their follow countrymen over you in dispute.

Also show respect for the Thai Police as rude talk and/or shouting should be avoided in every case, guilty or not. Thai Police officers have much greater powers of action than for example their European counterparts and will not accept disrespectful behaviour.

Also check your vehicle for damage before you start, otherwise you might have to pay for damages you did not cause.

    Pattaya, uncomfortable streets...

    by voyageur2 Updated May 25, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Some tour packages contain Pattaya, a city about 2 hours from Bangkok. Pattaya has long beaches and close to coral islands. Daytime it seems like a beautiful holiday resort. But it converts to a different atmosphere at night. Most of cities in the world are a bit dangerous for ladies late night. On the contrary men have to be careful against crowded shemales along the main street in Pattaya. I have never heard a bad news about tourists there, anyway they behave agressively sometimes. Keep away from them and do not trust pimps. Simply do not talk and go ahead...

I must say I did hire a jet ski a few times but do use them with caution as they are not insured and any accident you are involved, or any damage caused will have to paid by the user.

    Peddlers,pimps,touts & tramps !

After the first or second day in Pattaya one will long to be left alone whilst strolling down a street. Sadly, some of the main streets like Beach Road, some soi's off Beach Road and Walking St do not make easy walking. Absence of proper side-walks is only part of the problem. A bigger menace is the constant call-outs (sometimes pictures are pushed just under your nose) and hassles from peddlers, pumps, touts & tramps. A nice place spoiled by these depraved sorts. Be careful not to get too irritated with them. I have seen several Thai people ganging up to beat "farangs" on more than one occasion. It is important to remember that the Thai's in Pattaya, Phuket & Patong do not represent the rest of Thailand - where Thais are generally the smiling, warm, welcoming people we hear about. Pattaya, Phuket & Patong attracts Thai's keen to make a quick buck no matter what it takes - so be careful.
