Cool Corner restaurant.: It's not on the corner at all.

    Cool Corner restaurant, Trat, Thailand.

You would think that if you called a restaurant the Cool Corner the chances are that it would be, well, on a corner. Of course, it's not. This is not, however, the fault of Morn the larger than life owner but due to the fact that the original incarnation of the place burnt down a couple of years ago. I have no idea what it was like but the current premises are very pleasant with a hammock, chillout area, verandah tables and all sorts of knick knacks, probably reflecting Morn's status as an Art graduate. The musical policy here is eclectic to say the least. World music seems to predominate and I must say I find it slightly odd eating Thai cuisine with it's very distinctive flavours whilst listening to African palm wine guitar.

Which brings me more or less neatly to the food itself which is nothing short of magnificent. The menu, itself interestingly presented in CD covers, is varied and covers a good range of Thai and Western dishes, with a seperate breakfast menu also available. On my first visit, I opted for the Thai red curry with pineapple and pork and it was stunning. I have eaten a lot of Thai food both in Thailand and elsewhere and this was one of the best dishes I have ever had. It really was that tasty. On another occasion, I tried the Indian yellow curry which is offered with naan brad or rice. The curry was not authentic Indian but extremely tasty nonetheless and the naan was strictly speaking a paratha (folded and fried in oil as opposed to baked in a tandoor) but that is to quibble, both were very good.

Whilst the purists may argue it is not an "authentic" Thai restarant, and this is true, I really don't care. If you want extremely tasty food in pleasant surroundings with decent service, this is the place to be.

    Highly recommended.

Pier 112 restaurant.: There isn't a pier here.

There is something slightly odd about the restaurant naming system in Trat. In the same way as the Cool Corner restaurant is not on a corner, so the Pier 112 restaurant doesn't have a pier, although it has some garden tables overlooking the river. Perhaps the pier was removed to accomodate the new walkway, I don't know. What it does have is a very pleasant layout, some excellent food, decent service and about the only draught beer I found in town.

Most of the seating is al fresco, no bad thing in the heat of March, and I had plenty of choice as the place seemed pretty empty. This surprises me as what followed was a very pleasant eating experience. You should treat yourself to a look around the place as there are some curiosities there from the gaudily painted old sportscar you can see in the photo to a collection of old toys in a cabinet and a wonderful old shipping sign inside.

Service was prompt and friendly and the English menu quite extensive, offering both Thai and Western food. Having eaten earlier, I really only wanted a snack and ordered the minced prawn in batter (actually breadcrumb) which duly arrived with a dipping sauce and was completely delicious washed down with a draught Chang Beer. In fact, the portion was rather larger than "snack" proportions and would easily have satisfied as a main.

    Recommended.

Unnamed cafe.: Watch the world go by.

    Unnamed restaurant, Trat, Thailand.

There is a cafe which sits at the junction of Th. Sukhumvit and Th. Lak Meuang. If there could be said to be a main road junction in Trat, I suppose this would be it. Although there is no sign naming the premises, I feel fairly confident in saying that it is a sister establishment to Pier 112 (see seperate tip). This does not make me Sherlock Holmes material but the fact that they use the same (if abridged) menu is a bit of a giveaway. It is a good place to stop for a coffee or an excellent fruit juice and watch as the business of Trat goes on around you.

There is a limited menu, and I only had a toasted sandwich as a snack one day, which was well done, although I suppose you can't really go wrong, short of burning the toast!

Favorite Dish: The toastie as described.

    Cool Corner: Take a chill

by yermo Written Aug 19, 2006

Not only an amazing good kitchen, but as well a hell of a personality. Morn is more then just a cool woman. She's not aways open because she's just to much of a life enjoyer herself. A traveler that takes off every rainseason to explore Asia, sometimes working in the film industry and quite an accomplished writer in Thailand (style Bridget Jones). She's got an amazing CD collection going from easy chill out, hiphop, altenative etc, all in an ambiance of ... well, we're all just hangin out here, aren't we. Type, well the fridge is over there, just take what you need and the bill will follow one day soon.

Favorite Dish: Definatly go for the tuna sandwiche, but her currys are amongst the best as well
