Weather in June & July in Phuket

by earthflyer

If you heading for the beach like phuket then the weather will be fine in June and July but you will get a build up of cloud during the day a small welcoming shower late in the afternoon but only for a short time then it will break up in time for the sunset. And the sunsets are usually brilliant.

Visa matters.

by planxty

Thai visa regulations seem to change on a fairly regular basis so do check on the website provided. This information in valid as of December 2009. Firstly, you should know the difference between a visa waiver and visa on arrival. I had thought I required a visa on arrival as I shall explain, and what happened at Bangkok airport.I had been assured by the visa people at my travel agents in the UK that it was possible to get a visa on arrival valid for 30 days. I spied the visa on arrival desk and read the instructions. It was going on about the visa only being for 15 days, photographs required etc. Naturally, they had a photo booth nearby so I got my photos and rejoined the queue. Another long queuing session ensued. When I got to the front, the official asked me what passport I had, and when I showed him he beamed at me in that charming Thai way and said, "no need" directing me to the...

Ho, ho, ho - Merry Christmas.

by planxty

For a country which is predominantly Buddhist (although very religiously tolerant) I find it somewhat amazing the way they have embraced the concept of Christmas. I visited in December, and ther were Christmas trees, Santas and decorations everywhere. Initially, I thought it was a tourist friendly thing but I am now not so sure. The photograph shows a rather splendid Father Christmas, who eventually drove me mad with his repetitive Christmas song, bujt this was taken on the outskirts of Lampang, a town not overly visited by tourists, and this place was a bit off the beaten track. I doubt if they ever see Westerners here. Perhaps it is just an excuse for a party, although if any VT reader with a greater insight into the country could enlighten me, I would be most grateful.

A truly multi-religious place.

by planxty

Having travelled a bit in Thailand, I am always amazed at how religions truly exist amicably here. I am not niaive enough to deny that there are problems in the "Deep South" but the current informed thinking is that these are effectively criminal and business disputes masquerading as militant religion. Coming from Northern Ireland, I have some sort of an idea about how that works. The photo accompanying this tip was taken in an obviously Christian burial ground on the outskirts of Lampang in Northern Thailand. I have a strange fascination for graveyards, as I think there is much to be learned about local history etc. from them. As you can see, the Christian graves are easily identifiable as such, but on a tree in the place I found the coloured "scarf" tied round the tree, a very Buddhist concept. A further examination found offerings of fruit, water etc. on many of the gravestones, again...

Put it in the bin.

by planxty

The photograph accompanying this tip demonstrates two things aobut Thailand. The problem of rubbish is a serious one all over the country especially in the cities and larger towns, and even beautiful rural areas are often despoiled by huge piles of rubbish dumped at the side of the road. The second is the great ability of Southeast Asian people to recycle just about anything. The photo is of a waste bin made obviously from recycled lorry tyres and is very common particularly in Southern Thailand. I have also seem them used as flowerpots and I think they have a certain charm. My plea to you would be, and it appears obvious, don't drop litter when you visit, use these things. If local people choose to litter their country, I suppose that is their prerogative although I don't like it but there is no excuse for visitors to exacerbate the problem.

Long live the King.

by planxty

The monarchy in Thailand is revered in a way that I cannot think of replicated in any other country I have visited. The current monarch, King Bhumipol Adulyadej, or Rama IX to give him his dynastic title, is held almost to be semi-divine by the Thai and visitors should be careful not to show any disrespect to either him or the institution of the monarchy. King Bhumipol Adulyadej has ruled now for over 60 years and is the longest serving head of state in the world. Having ascended the throne a relatively young age in 1947 on the death of his brother, he is seen as a very stabilising influence in a country where politics can be volatile and military coups are not unknown. Given the demographics of the country, the vast majority of Thais have lived under his rule for all of their lives and seem happy to do so.Should you be in Thailand on or about the 5th December, the King's birthday you...

Thai weather in July

by earthflyer

Thailand weather in July will be very hot and humid and can be very uncomfortable if you are not used to 35c Average with 100% humidity. The north and North east Thailand will be rainy season and many places flood big time and they do so every year.In the south like Phuket and Koh Samui area you can get away with it but do expect rainy days but the two seas around these islands have different weather system where one side might rain but not the other.

Southern road trip

by bulldogtwo

You can go all the way to Phuket in one day, it's a long drive , we did it only a couple months ago and we did it along hiway 4, the Andaman coast. I would not advise that but we were trying to get from Khao Lak to Chumphon in one day. There was not a whole lot to see along the way, but there are some great national parks and waterfalls. Other than that there was not much else to see and we did stop many times to see what was in many of the towns along the way. Of course you always have great friendly people in these towns but not much else to see. We were very unimmpressed with Ranong. Stayed overnight there which we regretted. Some great scenery in the hills and mountains, especially if you get to some of the falls.Let me know if you take that route. I would be interested if you find something else along the way that we may have missed!.Good luck and have fun!
