should I visit Thailand despite instability

by seagypsy

I think Thailand is a terrific country to visit but until they, the people, are able to figure out how they want their 'democracy' to work, then prospective visitors with tight time frames are likely to avoid Bangkok especially after the December fiasco of Suvarnabhumi's shutdown. Tourists need to have a sense or stability and dependability and if they don't feel that they can catch their flights, then they'll choose an alternative gateway such as KL or Singapore. It's really sad how the politicians, especially Thaksin, have destroyed Thailand's reputation as a 'safe' destination. On the other hand, I've visited Thailand enough to know how to avoid the 'troubled' areas. And it's a great time to travel there because there are great deals / discounts to be had.

Where to Go?

by bulldogtwo

We really enjoy the Khao Lak area, about an hour north of Phuket. It has really laid back beaches that are as good as Phuket, better if you like to find secluded areas. The town does have some bars but I would say that they are not like Phuket, (Patong) bars, but again, that is the draw for us. If the bar scene is your thing more than being laid back and a nice quiet town then stay in Phuket. You're still on the Andaman side and that in our opinion is the best areas for beaches in Thailand.Have fun

Booking ahead in Bnagkok

by bulldogtwo

Agree with John A. You can spend a lot of time looking around finding a place that you like, even if you know there area. Not to mention it'll depend greatly on the season that you are going. Also depends on what time of day or night you arrive.Book a place for a night or two. This will give you time to look around and orientate yourself and without having to drag your bags around from place to place. Why run about looking for a place when you can be settling in and thinking about having fun. Should you decide to stay, usually your hotel will allow you to stay beyond your reservation and even negotiate your rate.Book ahead and get in, then look around.

Songran festival

by bulldogtwo

Agree 100% with John, Thailand is always worth it, even in the rainy season, there's always something interesting to do or see.Songkran is best if you can get out of Bangkok though, my favorite is up north in Chiang Mai. For some reason they seem to have more fun doing it, maybe because they are smaller than Bangkok, not really sure but if you can get out of Bangkok that is what I would suggest. Wherever you go, just make sure that you are not carrying anything that can't get wet, and that you don't mind getting wet. I've seen tourists being very put off being being splashed, which by the way makes it even more hilarious and fun, "what are ya doing there during Songkran then?" No one is exempt from this, not even the traffic cops on the street. Can't wait to get back for my next Songkran festival! My next favorite festival is in November, the Loy Krathong festival and Yee Peng, Really...

Bangkok on a shoestring

by YaaDong

Bangkok is still a great place for budget travellers.Head to Khaosan Road for a cheap room ;Sawasee Inn 350 baht a night or less.Grab a fried noodle or fried rice off the street vendor for 20-40 baht.If your feeling thirsty go to a 7-11 where you can get a bottle of water for 6 baht or a can of cold beer for 20 baht. Some bars have ladies night specials. Try Coyote on Convent Road where waiters will keep your margarita glass overflowing for free 6-8 p.m. on Wednesdays .For abit of sightseeing jump on the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat for the day 100 baht or wonder through one if the meny temples. This should leave you with plenty of baht to go shopping for cloths and stuff at the many street markets . For a traditional Thai massage head to Madame Joe's, staffed by graduates of the famous Wat Po Massage School, offers affordable massage in the Khao San area, at 180 baht (5.37) for one hour....

Visa Run to Cambodia (from Koh Chang)

by THAIFJ

As you might know or recently found out, there has been a change in the Visa regulations, issued by the Thailand Immigration Office regarding the border crossing via a land border crossing from a neighbouring country from the end of 2008 (exact date not known by me).Instead of getting 30 days of stay (as in the past) you will be allowed only a 15 days stay.(This depends on the country of which you have a passport. Please check Internet or other sources.)Which could mean that you have to make a Visa Run, just like me, because I simply didn't know about the new rule.I made my visa run in January 2009 from Koh Chang Island to the border checkpoint with Cambodia at Haad Lek, also called Hat Lek (TH) / Koh Khong (CAM). This is the procedure:1. Buy a transport ticket to the border in any travel agency. Make sure you are going to Haad Lek (and NOT TO Aranyaprathet, which might be some 200 Baht...

malaria dengue

by mylene9

Honestly, I lived in bangkok for a year, then moved to chiang mai for another year and a half. Never had any vaccinations nor any tablets. oh I forgot I also spent my first month on arrival in a forest monastery in the Northeast territories... with swamps all around etc.I did get dengue fever once, on arrival in chiang mai. For this I would recommend having rehydration salts with you and vitamin c. That's all the doctor would give you should you ask one there. He/she would just check that the symptoms are indeed dengue and tell you to rehydrate and take vitamines that's it. Mine lasted 3 days I think and I was quite shivering with high fevers and muscle pain. But ok I survived it.I am about to go to India for 4 months and still have nothing of what is recommended. I will just make sure I don't fall into habits too quickly and will make sure to spray myself with DEET insect repellents,...

Island Milk; Thailand

by bulldogtwo

Yes, you may find it difficult to find fresh milk on some of the smaller islands. If you are in contact with a hotel on one of the islands for accomodations, then I would inquire about the availability of milk. Your other option is to buy a small cooler and ice and take some fresh milk with you from Bangkok. Fresh milk should last you 5-7 days as long as it is kept cold.Good luck

Thailand; "Got Milk?"

by bulldogtwo

Yeah, Thailand has a big Foremost dairy and you should be able to find fresh milk all over Thailand, especially in Bangkok. You can go to any of the Sukhumvit grocerers and convenient stores, there are 7-11's on almost every street corner. There's also a grocer in the basement section under the Westin Hotel (not part of the hotel) on Sukhumvit near Soi Asoke. You shouldn't have any trouble finding milk.
