Money and rainy season tips in Thailand

by bulldogtwo

Really a matter of opinion here I think, as much of VT advice!Thailand has made it really easy with ATM/credit card machines located virtually everywhere. So if you are inclined to carry only that you should not have much if any problems. I always like to carry a few hundred$$ with me for convenience sake and some of that I usually break up evenly into Traveller Cheques. Most of this I use when transiting airports etc...Always check with your bank to make sure how much they may charge you for conversion, and understand that it could change daily with rates. Thailand rates are pretty stable lately so it wont flucuate that much but some banks do charge a hefty price to do a conversion. I'd take at least two cards just in case you loose one. On that note make sure you have international tel numbers handy in case on is lost or stolen. You credit card/ bank should be able to provide you with...

Prescription drugs in Thailand

by bulldogtwo

Yes, you should not have a problem getting into Thailand. I did notice that you did not mention "prescription" but I assume that they are. If so make sure that you have them in their original bottles/containers and any prescription information from the doctor that you have, if not get it.I would add this. You would probably have a lot more problems getting back into the states going through customs with these drugs than getting in and out of Thailand. Isn't it just a joy going through US Customs and Immigration(NOT!)(Sorry, just had to add that)Enjoy your trip to Thailand

Thai nature and culture

by bulldogtwo

It really is up to you and what you want from a trip. As you stated earlier, you want to get out and see some nature and culture. You can get that ijn Laos and Cambodia and Thailand. Staying away from the tourist areas helps you do that better. Vivispy stated that they didn't like Phuket, yeah, you have to get out and travel a bit. Get into the country and see the farms and rice fields and the locals working them. You'll run into tourist traps no matter where you go but you can also get aawy from them. Easly to base in Phuket and day trip on a motorbike to the country and the National Parks. Or as I said erlier stay in or near the National Parks. All along the Andaman coast there are deserted beaches where nobody seems to go, some in the parks some not. One of the reasons I choose Thailand over the other places is that it is so easy (easier) to get around. Intact infastructure and you...

Bangkok Tailors

by bulldogtwo

There are a couple places that i would recommend. The first would be Raja Fashion located at Sukhumvit Rd and soi 4, No. 130. Almost at the intersection of these streets and directly across from the Nana Hotel. Go to the above mentioned intersection, walk down soi 4 and Raja's is located about 100 yards or less on the left side of soi 4. Raja has been there for decades, reputable and does much of the diplomatic corps. He does good work and his suits last for years. I've never had a problem with any of his stiching, seams, hems, lining or whatever else may go wrong with tailor made clothing. For dresses, Raja's wife has a shop located across the street on Sukhumvit Rd. Don't know the name or address but as I said, it's located across Sukhumvit, go to Raja's, he will either direct you for dresses to his wife's shop or he'll have someone take you across the street.Price wise, yeah, Raja's...

October weather in Thailand

by bulldogtwo

Yes for the most part the rainy season should be over. You will still have rain periodically during the day but only for brief periods. Usually only for 10-20 minutes and at the most maybe an hour. These however don't compare to the torrential monsoon showers that you'd get in July August. These will be mild rains or sprinkles, usually. While travelling around and you get caught in the rain, pull over to a cafe, get a snack and soon enough the rain will have passed. The temp will be warm or hot depending on where you are coming from and humid, although not as bad on the coast as you will usually have a decent breeze. October is a great month to go. Everything will be green and lush, and don't forget to check out the waterfalls that are everywhere. They can be a lot of fun to swim in and cool off, not to mention scenic.Have fun

$1 US Dollar Equals 33.44 Thai Baht

by GracesTrips

As of July 24, 20085,000 Baht equals US $149.532,500 Baht equals US $74.762,000 Baht equals US $59.811,500 Baht equals US $44.861,000 Baht equals US $29.91 500 Baht equals US $14.96Paper bills are in denominations of 1,000, 500, 100, 50, 20 bahtCoins are in denominations of 25 satang, 50 satang, 1 baht, 5 baht and 10 baht. Banks are generally open from 9:30am to 3:30pm during the weekdays. Many banks in popular tourist areas are open late in the evening every day to accomodate foreign exchange services. When ordering foreign currency, do not order an even amount ie: 15,000 baht. You will probably receive 15 1,000 baht bills. You will need some smaller denominations. So, order 14,900 baht. Some taxis don't make change so try to give the the exact cost of fare.

back pack vs. suitcase with wheels

by dgunbug

My husband and I are also debating about backpacks. We always take a carry on rolling suitcase along with a small backpack. We have decided that we want to purchase a new backpack (the old one is basically a book back). We are looking for one that has a waist belt that will take the weight off the shoulders. I would personally recommend bringing the suitcase along with a small backpack, giving you the flexibility of leaving the suitcase behind at a hotel in storage if you go on any trecking trips or day trips. Remember, for a day or two, you only need a small pack. Does anyone have any suggestions on particular backpacks? Please email me directly at dgunbug@aol.com. Thanks! - June

currency

by MichaelDovey

With my last two trips, I have not bothered with travellers cheques, or pre-bought currency, and have only used my credit card at ATM's in order to draw money. It is safer and easier, and there are ATM's outside most hotels, and in all major shopping centres. Thailand is truely "The Land of Smiles".Their respect towards their chosen religon, and to the Monarchy is amazing

Baht exchange

by bulldogtwo

No, don't buy Baht in the states. When you arrive at the airport you can change some money at that time. I usually change about 100$, enough to get me into town, taxi, eat etc. You will always get a higher rate changing 100$bills vs 50's or 20's. Once in Bangkok, there are bank kiosks everywhere to change money. The rates may vary, but usually by only a couple of baht. Exchanging is easy in Thailand, don't use US$, no need, and if they exchange will give a poor rate. Credit cards can be used but you will be charged a fee by your CC for the exchange. I will sometimes use my CC for hotel bill and usually when I know it is in US$ over the internet.good luck

Backpacking in Thailand

by bulldogtwo

I agree, backpack all the way. Even if you were staying in the city, wheels just don't work on the side walks. Also, think about scaling back on what you pack. You are going to a hot, tropical country, super light weight clothing is the way to go, that usually mean, Columbia nylon pants and shirt, men and ladies or any other brand. Blue jeans just don't cut it in the tropics. You can also wash clothes on the road and it's really cheap in Thailand. You can get a weeks worth done for a few dollars. As far as the pack is concerned, my advise is "don't go cheap", you get what you pay for. LL Bean has back packs that I have used and travelled with all over the world. They may, or may not, cost a couple dollars more but they are worth every penny. Should anything go wrong with your pack, in your life time, you'll get a full 100% refund, no questions asked, or another pack. They come in all...
