Offering gold leaves

by SLLiew

At many Buddhist temples, including this picture of the Royal Palace Temple, local Thais offer food, flowers and paper thin gold leaves for prayers. This gold leaf is often applied to a Buddha statue. Although thin, when applied by many, the Buddha looks like a solid gold statue. At one of the major Buddhist meditation center that I visited, there was a life solid gold statue of the founding monk built from donations of many and wealthy donors. But I guess, it is depends on how much worldly wealth you have, gold leaves are good enough.

Local beer: SINGHA, the lion

by hojasdehierba

If you like beer, you will see a lot of SINGHA at Thailand. It is the most popular thai beer and you will surely find places where Singha is the only beer on their menu. The label shows the brand symbol, a lion, although you must be a little imaginative to identify the animal with a real lion. There exist two bottle sizes: small one is 330 ml. and big one is 660 ml. It is not my favorite beer, but I got gradually fond of it.Si te gusta la cerveza, veras muchas Singhas en Thailandia.

Thai food: delicious pad thai

by hojasdehierba

I think than any restaurant we visited in Thailand had pad thai on its menu. Good news for me: I tasted this delicious dish on my first day at Bangkok and fell in love with it. I ordered it many times along the tour and, with only one exception, which I didn't like, I was generally very satisfied. Pad thai consist mainl on noodles with vegetables, shrimps and some kind of thai spices. Some of them include also squids or even only vegetables. It is not very hot, so don't be afraid to order it if you are not very fond of spicy food.

Be Aware

by daaebissa

* Hands folded in prayer position and a bow with a nice "sawadee kah" was always good I found.* Take your shoes off!!!! Always be aware of this, look at what the locals are doing.* Don't show your anger or frustration. Just take a deep breath, relax, and try again.

Buddhist Monks

by keeweechic

You are not allowed to keep your shoes on inside mosques and temples and there is usually a place outside these to leave them safely. In local homes also it is polite to remove your shoes before entering although not necessarily expected of overseas visitors.

Thai Customs and Taboos

by keeweechic

Thai people have a number of customs and taboos which the visitor should respect. Public displays of affection between men and women are frowned upon. You may see Westernised young Thais holding hands in public, but that is as far as it goes, in polite society. They also consider the head as the highest part of the body, both literally and figuratively. As a result they don't approve of touching anyone on the head, even as a friendly gesture.

Phuket - Chinese Vegetarian Festival

by keeweechic

Each year beginning on the first day of the ninth month of the Chinese year (usually in late September or early October) Phuket islanders of Chinese ancestry obligate themselves to a 9 day vegetarian diet. This routine is undertaken with the belief that the body and spirit will be thoroughly cleansed thus ensuing the following year will be blessed with good luck. On the first day of the festival there is a parade of devotees clothed all in white as well as some events like fire walking, and some others which are probably harder to watch such as iron rods being pushed through different parts of the body.

Muai Thai

by keeweechic

Muai Thai boxing is quite unique to Thailand. In this style the participants use not only boxing gloves but knees, elbows and bare feet. The sport is a tradition as well as a martial art and there are rituals involved. You certainly need great fitness as the sport is fast and furious. There are two boxing arenas in Bankok which have fights almost every night of the week.

Dress

by keeweechic

For tourists in the tourist areas it is perfectly acceptable to wear shorts and t-shirts etc but when visiting temples, respect should be shown and females are expected to be dressed in accordance with this – usually legs and shoulders/arms to be covered. Jackets and ties are not necessary in the evening but smart casual is preferred.

General Weather information year-round for Phuket

by Homanded

Phuket has 2 definite weather patterns: Monsoon season and more popular dry, sunny season when weather is usually cooler but also the height of the tourist season. Our favorite was June which is begining of slow season, great deals and offers throughout Thailand and although it is officially the start of the rainy season, rains seldom last longer than an hour or two of heavy downpours preceeded and followed by wonderful sunshine. For a more detailed weather information liste go to following link:
