Getting to Khon Kaen is pretty easy. There are several flights from/ to Khon Kaen from Bangkok few times a day.
The only anoying thing is that if you arrive with an international flight and have an immediate connecting flight to Khon Kaen it takes you ages and lots of sweat to get from the international to the domestic terminal !!!!
Since domestic flights are rather cheap you can even book business class for only about 10€ additionally - for further deatils check the Thai airlines homepage.
I guess you can't fly business anywhere cheaper !!!
Flight BKK - KK is about 1 hour

Getting around in Khon Kaen needs a while to be figured out!
There's sth. like a public bus called Song Tauw. They are like pick ups with 2 benches in the back. There are different lines through the city. YOu can decide between the different lines by the colour of the car. You wave at the Song Tauw and get on it. You pay when you get off. It definitely helps if you have a local to help you get around !!!
Of course you can also take a Tuk Tuk which will take you everywhere in town too.

Sopheak,
Once you are on Khon Kaen, you should not have any trouble finding another bus to Viengchian. The bus terminal should have information and tickts. Of course you will still have to stop at customs and immigration, but there should be bus service directly, or I should say, at least to the border.

There is even an 'international bus' that runs between Khon Khaen and Vientiane/Viengchan Laos. It's an air con bus and it's pretty cheap. Last year it ran several times a day but now it's just once per day. Otherwise, you can take buses between Khon Khaen and Nong Khai and transfer from the bus station to the Friendship Bridge/border via tuk tuk or via another 'international bus' that runs between Nong Khai and Vientiane. If you're in a rush, then it's faster but costs more to take a tuk tuk to the obrde rThe international bus starts/ends at Viengchan's Talat Sao/Morning Market Bus Station. You have to have a Lao visa and your passport to buy the bus ticket.
There's also the train which goes all the way to Nong Khai from Hualamphong Train Station in Bangkok and also picks up passengeres en route to Nong Khai (meaning that you can also catch the train in Khon Khaen, too).

We traveled around Khon Kaen a lot. There are three main modes of transportation.
The buses are called 'songteaws', and are actually pick-up trucks with two rows of seats with a roof on the back. They are color coded, and each has a number painted on the side to designate its route. They charge eight baht for any trip within the city. These things were great! You ride around, up close to everything. The only problem is figuring which songteaw to catch. We finally picked up a map from the tourist (TAT) office which showed the routes.
Metered cabs are new to Khon Kaen. They are extremely comfortable and surprisingly cheap. The initial fee is 30 baht, thereafter 2 baht per kilometer. Apparently, you can negotiate a flat rate once you travel beyond the city limits.
Lastly, there are the tuk-tuks. Initially, we used these, assuming they'd be cheaper than the metered cabs. THEY ARE NOT! Stay away from these things. They are expensive (minimum fee was 60 baht), loud, uncomfortable, and definitely unsafe. Plus, there's no room for baggage. We were charged different rates by different drivers, and getting change from them was virtually impossible.
