The sacred shrine is located in front of Sala Suk Chai, on Thepharak Road in the compound of the Khon Kaen Municipality Office. A famous monk and former governor of Khon Kaen placed a stone inscription from an ancient site in Amphoe Chum Phae here for a Buddhism rite and set up the city pillar shrine.

    Wat Phra That

by Willettsworld Written Dec 20, 2009
    1 more image

The first governor of Khon Kaen, Phraya Nakhon Sri Borirak Raja Bhakdi, built this temple, on the northern side of the lake, in 1789, around the time the city was founded. The name of the temple was derived from the Phra That pagoda, built as a holy site for the locals to worship. Many of the pagodas on the temple ground are badly ruined and it's no longer possible to identify which one is the original. The temple committee decided to build a new pagoda which soars over the old ruins to a height of 45 metres.

    Phra Thaat Kham Kaen temple

by pattayaraj Updated May 28, 2006
    ubosot

One of the most significant chedi in Northeastern,Thailand. From the legend told about after Nirvana of the Buddha, all city rulers joined to built Phra Thaat Phanom chedi at Nakorn Phanom for housing the great relic of Buddha. At that time,King Muariya of Mori city and 9 Buddhist saints carried the great relic to Phra Thaat Phanom. When they reached the area of Kham Kaen temple. They found a Tamarind tree which going to died, they stopped for a rest and travelled later. They arrived Phra Thaat Phanom but it was finished so they couldn't house the relic inside. They decided to go back on the same route and found that Tamarind tree 've became alive. It was a miracle so they decided to built chedi over that tamarind tree and contained the great relic with some auspicious stuffs. Then it became the legend of Khon Kaen too.
The interesting things here 're Phra Thaat Kham Kaen chedi with 10 meters hight. And on the East of chedi located the Ubosot or Sim or Or ordination hall in Lanxang style.
