I always go to central of the town to pay homage to Thao Suranaree or locals call Ya Mo at Thao Suranaree Statue. It is like a tradition, Korat locals must come to pay homage and ask for blessings from her. She is a heroine in Thai history and Korat history. Back to the reign of King Rama III, she was born in 1771 in Korat. Her original name was Mo which mean big. She was a wife of the Korat Deputy Governor. Her heroine deed was about saving Korat from the invasion of the Laotian army from Vientiane in 1826 and later, she was honored to be Thao Suranaree.
In these days, not only locals but mostly visitors from other provinces when they visit Korat, always take a chance come to pay homage at the statue.
If you happen to be in Korat around last week of March you shouldn't miss Thao Suranaree Fair. It's a major fair of the province, be held every year, start from 23 of March and last until 3 of April. The main purpose of the fair is held in honour to Thao Suranaree, the heroine of Korat people. The fair will be set up around the area front of provincial hall and along the road lead to Thao Suranaree Statue. I think it's worth a visit if you want to experience the local northeastern culture. The fair is in local style and mostly locals attend. There is some cultural activities / performances, exhibitions and you can enjoy looking at booths of local products. Good to visit by the evening time, take a walk and taste some local foods.
Khorat song is a local poetic play. It's the traditional song of Khorat. This song uses in festivals or making a thank offering to holy statues,so you can listen to the songs at the Ya Mo Monument area.
The performance which really a symbol of the province is “Pleng Korat” (Pleng = Song). It has been playing a lot in Korat but nowadays seem mostly in country area play it. In the town I have seen, the performance perform at the place around Thao Suranaree Statue which play for purpose to pay homage to Thao Suranaree when locals asked for blessing from her and get the achieve.
