    Phu Pek

by pattayaraj Written Jun 28, 2006

It was the hardest place I 've been. The way to this place was made from red earth and rough. And later, walk up to the temple on 491 steep stairways. On the peak of Phu Pek mountain (Phu Pan range) located a huge Ancient Khmer sanctuary called Phra That Phu Pek.It was built by sandstone with 7.67 high but incompleted. From the local legend described that there're 2 groups : men and women contested to built 2 buildings for housing the great relic of Buddha. But the men group who built this building stopped when they saw the Pek star on the sky,it was a sign as the trick of women group who lie that they 've already finished the Narai Jeng Weng temple. So this building called "Prasart Phra That Phu Pek" followed "Pek" star. However,it was actually built in Hindu religion and dated to 16-17 Buddhist centuries.

This temple was built in the same period of Phra That Narai Cheng Weng where built in Baphoun of Ancient Khmer Art which ever spread in some parts of Thailand. It was built by brick and decorated with sandstone in some parts, such as lintel, decorated door columns,topmost,... The interesting stuff's lintel depicting God Vishnu sleeping in the milk ocean. For now,it located in an area of Phra That Dum temple.

This Ancient Khmer sanctuary is one holy place among Sakon people. The sanctuary or Thai called "Prang"or 'Prasart" was built in Baphoun style of Ancient Khmer Art,about 16-17 Buddhist centuries. It built from sandstones on laterite base, some parts of building decorated with carving sandstones. The most interesting's carving lintel depicted the story of Khrisna killing the lion.Local people believes that this sanctuary was built by women. And Phra That Phu Pek was built by men. They was on building competition.

I love to the restuarant which there are several chioces for me and my family to eat. Greencorner meets the expectation. Breakfast, Lunch , Dinner, Steak , Pizza, and Hot pot with Taro + Fish. You can also find the traditional food here, depending on season.
The bakery here is the best. Belgium Chocolate cake , cheese cake , and even birthday cake are fantastic. There was a new section opened lately. It looked nice.
In conclusion, I had a good experience going there. It is the place which i must go everytime i go to Sakol nakhon. My kids love it there

Favorite Dish: T-borne steak, Pizza , fish cake are recommended.

there are different styles of pizzas and they are big and tasteful even though it's a Thai restaurant after all. They serve also other Italian food and it also has a bakery (look to the right). The prices are OK considering it's foreign cuisine and the service is quick and friendly. They present a menue in English, too.

The restaurant is cleaner than the average ones in this town. In fact it's somewhat fancy! In Sakhon, it's not too common to sit inside. This is enjoyable and hygienic because of the dirt and loudness.

I really didn't expect to find such a restaurant in this town. For some Westeners, it is the only place where you can eat at western standard besides maybe 7-eleven which you hardly deserves to be called a restaurant. I forgot to mention the room has a glass front with a door which is very rare to see for a restaurant around here!

Prices as of 2007 are: Pizza 185 THB, T-Bone steak: 295 THB, Sorbet: 35 THB.

opening hours are daily 7 am to 10 pm

(Thanks to lunghans for his notice about the name of the restaurant)

Favorite Dish: Quadro Stagioni w/extra cheese

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Sakon has got a huge supermarket since 2004 which is named Tesco Lotus just outsite the of the town. You can easyly compare it to Cosco or Wal Mart in the US. You can get nearly everything for a good price.

What to buy: You can get nearly everything for a good price. In addition, you'll find Dairy Queen, Mister Donut, MK Restaurant and Pizza Today.

If you're not satisfied try out Big C Super Center in the town center.

What to pay: at least 2,000.00 THB
