They have a pool table, a TV room and various Aussie paraphenalia around the bar. The regulars aren't necessarily...

Udon Thani Transportation

  • Air Asia

Gotta love this airline. I flew to Udon Thani from Bangkok and paid 1200 baht return including taxes. The best part was that I got there in an hour rather than half a day on the bus. The airline was very professional and the staff were friendly - on both counts different from my previous experiences with other budget carriers.Obviously Air Asia has...

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This little shrine with a Buddha was set up on the front desk of the Charoen Hotel for Songkran (Thai New Year). You could make merit by dipping water and pouring it over the Buddha statue. I had already gotten splashed and powdered in Ban Chiang.

Udon Thani Warnings and Dangers

  • Dishonest Samlor Driver

When you arrive at a bus or train station in Thailand, there are always tuk tuk drivers hustling you to pick them for a ride. Most are honest and hardworking. We happened to pick a dishonest one in Udon. He first took us to the Udon Hotel instead of the Charoen Hotel (like those names sound alike?). He then tried to take us to the Charoensri Grand...

  • Feather Feet Taxi Drivers

This is fairly mild as far as warnings go, but important if you like to move fast. The easiest way to get around Udon Thani is by taxi, and much of the time it's a small samlor as pictured here. If you haggle a low fare, drivers try to conserve fuel as much as possible by coasting along, accelerating a little and then rolling as much as possible....

  • Don't Forget Insurance

If your current health insurance doesn't cover you while your abroad, you should consider getting international travel insurance just in case something should go wrong.

  • Very Dangerous...

The single most important thing you can do in Udon Thani is avoid Goverment sponsored terrorist. Do not for any reason attempt to protest any Government policy or you may be set upon by paid thugs with clubs and machetes and believe me they do not descriminate and will happily beat up women. Why just the other day an information marquee was set up...
