Ban Mae Salong Noi Things to Do

  • Temple on Doi Mae Salong

On top of the hill in Mae Salong is quite a nice temple. Make sure you visit the inside of the stupa. A person showed it to us. I specially enjoyed the sunset atmosphere we had. The view from up there is really nice. In addition it is much cooler as down in Chiang Rai and therefore there are some nice flowers around as well.

  • 700 steps to chedi

These are the steps to the chedi at the mountain top. It was claimed that there are 700 steps but I didn't really count them.

  • Chinese Martyrs Memorial Museum

This museum is built to commemorate those KMT soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the Thai government. There are hardly any exhibits in this museum except for some which describes the history of Mae Salong in long winded Chinese and broken English.

  • Mae Salong Flower Resort

The landscape at the Mae Salong Flower Resort is really beautiful but I think the accomodation in the resort is quite expensive.

  • Akha Village

This Akha village is located along the hiking trail. What I like about this village is that it is unlike other "touristy" villages in Thailand where the villagers would pester you to buy their things.

  • General Tuan Mausoleum

The entrance of the road leading to General Tuan Xi Wen's Mausoleum is located just beside the Akha morning market.

This was just what we needed before the long drive back to Chiang Rai with a very nice sunset view! (Sunrise might be even better) A perfect coffee shop at the end of the world! You can sit on a nice terrace and enjoy the special atmosphere of the area. They have a lot of different coffee drinks and yummy cookies!

From Chiang Rai, board a Mae Sai bound bus and tell the bus conductor that you are going to Ban Basang. At Ban Basang, there will be 1 or 2 blue Sawngthaews (pick ups) going up to Mae Salong. The driver will normally wait for 6-7 passengers before leaving. Therefore, it would be better to reach Ban Basang early at before 830am when there are more...

  • Thai Military Bank

There is a Thai Military Bank with an atm facility. It is located near the Akha morning market. This market is not to be confused with the morning market located beside Shin Sane Guesthoues.

  • 7-11 convenience store

7-11 convenience store is somewhat the centre of the town in my opinion. You can buy most of the things you need here. However, there is no international payphone here unlike other 7-11 stores in most of Thailand.

  • Still Relatively Pure....

In all, the thing that I like most here was that Mae Salong is one town in Northern Thailand that still has a relatively authentic air about it... No big hotel developments yet, and you still see a more than a few hill tribe people around town. (I'm sure that being so close to the somewhat unstable border area with Burma helps keep down the number...
